FS5: FW 2.0 out today

I'll wait as long as possible to get the RAW upgrade. Maybe the price will drop if people don't buy it as fast as Sony wants. I'm also waiting for the Atomos Inferno to record 240fps continuous, or 4K 60 continuous.

Question: After the RAW upgrade, will the FS5 be able to record 4K 60P directly to an Inferno or an Odyssey without Sony's AXS-R5 external recorder and HXR-IFR5 interface?

Yes it will and an AXSR5 unit is not required for Sony raw, what is available by the 3G SDI interface with the FS5 raw upgrade. Take care, even the Shogun Inferno is able to record CDNG as 4K 30p only, but the conversion to ProRes will work up to 60p.

The older Shogun will be able to record up to 30p (both to CDNG and ProRes). To ProRes with the existing firmware, to CDNG with an upcoming firmware version.

The Q7+ together with the raw extention of the Q7+ (must be paid in addition to the FS5 raw upgrade and in addition to the Q7+) is able to record to CDNG 4K 60p.

But the big question is if the 12bit Sony linear raw will be better for the FS5 compared to the FS7. I think we do not know yet (at least I know not reviews up to now).

yes..odyssey for sure, i don't think there is any official info about the inferno yet?
but yes, no additional sony hardware needed, just a cable to external (3rd party) recorder....or the sony recorder solution...

i would love to see a comparison review between FS7 internal CINE-I 4k/60p and FS5 (raw upgrade) +inferno 4k 60p prores ....not sure there will be a big difference?

From the RAW output on the FS5, the Odyssey7Q+/7Q with Odyssey RAW Bundle will record:

4K up to 60p
4K Burst up to 120p
2K up to 240p

Odyssey can record all of the above in either CinemaDNG or Apple ProRes. In addition, in Apple ProRes the 4K RAW signals can be SuperSampled to HD for superior image quality.

No other device, even Sony's own solution, offers this level of support to the Sony FS5.

But not Sony raw to 4K DCI/UHD 50p/60p CDNG. Only to ProRes it will be 50p/60p, to CDNG you are limited to 30p with the Inferno.

I dont know. 300-400 at the best?

One reason I want the new Shogun / Inferno is for the 1,500nit monitor that you can see outside. Also their GUI and controls look to be more evolved and user friendly. Also there isn't an extra expense to record RAW (except for the camera's upgrade price). I also like the slightly smaller form factor. Either way, I'll be waiting to see how everything works out with early adopters. It's not like I don't get great footage already with just the camera.

This is the struggle for me trying to decide between the two (perhaps minus UI comparisons). I think CD just needs to upgrade the screen and the choice is clear (for me)! Hey throw in m.2 for storage and shrink the unit/gain power effeciency a bit -- and there's even less of an argument to go with a competitor :).

Ultimately it's a requirement for many professionals to get the full breadth of features that CD continues to offer compared to Atomos. I think as a first-time buyer of a recorder/monitor, I'm a bit more interested in the nit advantages that the Inferno offers compared to the truly badass capabilities the O7Q+ has as a recorder.

The Odyssey7Q+ offers many functions no other device has. Many also feel that our implementation of various monitoring tools is superior when compared to the versions offered by others. When a device offers so many options and functions it is certain to have a more complex user interface, but the point is certainly taken.

The Odyssey7Q+ features an OLED panel that shows the most accurate colors and true blacks. The NIT value is around 400, although NITs are not particularly accurate on a self-illuminating technology such as OLED compared to a backlit design such as an LCD.

I see nothing on the competition's website indicating that the upcoming product will record the 4K120p Burst from the FS5 & FS700 or the 2K240p (or any 2K) from the FS5/FS7/FS700). I do not see it noted for any format. The Odyssey7Q+ with Odyssey RAW Bundle will record all RAW output modes of these cameras and do so in either CinemaDNG or in Apple ProRes.

Sure that is a nice feature. And it is correct that this feature seems to be not supported by Atomos - at least it is not listed in their specification of the Inferno). What I think that is tough is to switch from an Atomos Shogun to the Q7+. Not only because the low NIT value nor because you have to purchase a new unit anyway for 4K 50p/60p. But because one has to purchase the raw update extra but also must puchase the expensive CD SSDs, priced twice then SSDs that one can use for the Shogun and the Shogun Inferno.

I haven't decided between the two yet as they both have different positives and negatives. The 7q will cost more in the end but should have more features and having Mitch active here makes me leaning that way but the Atomos does look good on paper. I'm just excited for the RAW possibility as this camera will be even more of a monster.

I have not decided up to now if I will take the FS5 at all. I could continue to use my Shogun to capture raw 4K 30p. But beside that the FS5 is a 8bit camera and does not even offer XAVC. Still thinking about that.

??? The FS5 is the first camera using XAVC-L as its exclusive codec. It’s 4:2:0 color space in UHD and 10 bit 4:2:2 color space in 1080p resolutions.

This is not correct.

For almost a year now the Odyssey7Q+ and the original Odyssey7Q have accepted the use of several models of Samsung SSDs.

Qualified Samsung SSDs include:
850 PRO series 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB
850 EVO series 1TB

I just checked on Amazon. The 850 EVO 1TB is available for $325. That's an incredibly reasonable price. Please show me the Shogun-compatible SSD that is available for 1/2 that price.

The Odyssey RAW Bundle is a $995 purchase on top of the $1795 price for the Odyssey7Q+. The RAW Bundle allows capture from the RAW from the following cameras:
Sony FS5
Sony FS7
Sony FS700
Canon C300 mkII
Canon C500
ARRI Alexa Classic
IndieCam GS2K
IO Industries Flare 2K
IO Industries Flare 4K
Panasonic VariCam LT (coming later this summer)

And there are more cameras being added to this list. I cannot share that information until the camera manufacturers announce their upcoming products, but we continue to update our support with the Odyssey RAW Bundle. No other company offers the level of support, the expansion of support and the ongoing growth of the product as Convergent Design does. There are MANY functions that are available on the Odyssey7Q+ that are not available on the competition's products. The Odyssey7Q+ is a product that you buy for one use today and then continue to find use for it with other tools for years into the future.

A small example from last week: The Odyssey7Q+ features six different modes of anamorphic desqueeze. It is also the ONLY device that will both desqueeze the image on its screen as well as send a disquieted image out to other monitors. Because of this feature alone, a major Hollywood tentpole feature film just got a pile of them to use with their many cameras on set. This movie is not even using the Odyssey7Q+ as an onboard monitor, they just want the desqueeze that they can transmit to the director at his monitors. And they were amazed that the only box available in the industry that can do this was the Odyssey7Q+.

When I buy a tripod, I don't want to get something just barely good enough to work with the one camera I'm using right now. I want to invest in a tool that will serve me well into the future. That is the type of tool one finds in the Odyssey7Q+.

The 7Q/7Q+ seems to be the most versatile recorder if you want to get all recording options that the FS5/7/700 can deliver.
I have a Shogun, I purchased it base on specs that were not delivered when the product arrived on the market. Even now, still not able to get CDNG with the Shogun. You always have to wait for firmware update for the promised functions.
Let’s face it, Atomos doesn’t target professional camera users. They target a different market segment.
As a new FS5 user, I’d like getting a 7Q+ in 5inch from factor, even I only get Prores from the raw.
At the end, it’s impossible to come-out with a product that satisfy everyone needs.

I’ve questions for Mitch.
  1. Can the 7Q+ can record Prores simultaneously to both SSD?
  2. For 2x anamorphic, is it possible, from the FS5/7/700, getting only the 4:3 portion of the picture and record it. Hopefully my question is understandable.
