Fuji X-T3 released

Couldn't have a $1500 10-bit 4K/60p little powerful machine with perfect colors and perfect auto-focus floating around...something had to give and it did.

X-Pro 3 (preproduction) has excellent AF in 4K but it's several hundred dollars higher priced.

My theory, as posted previously, was that XT-3 had to be crippled when A6600 came out at roughly the same price point. A6600 just happens to have a fantastic AI auto focus ... but no 10-bit. XT-3 has 10-bit but now no AF.

Fujifilm responded back in August about the AF focus issue:

The counter-argument/s is/are that it shouldn't be taking half a year to fix and the worst case scenario from the get-go would be to reload a previous, working, version. As things stand, they disabled one of the most important features on their product without any compensation to the owners. That's class action territory.

Fujifilm made it very clear that they are working on fixing issues AND improving/adding features to X-T3 and X-T30 when X-A7 was launched.

Have some patience please.

Get over the conspiracy theory guys...
Whether it's been done in cahoots with the manufacturer of Fuji's sensors (Sony manufactures the X-Trans APS-C for Fuji, as well as sells them their own designs for the Medium Format GFX50 and GFX100) or purely by some unintentional technical mishap, the result has been highly detrimental for the owners of XT-3 to the point of rendering the unit completely useless. This has arguably been the most egregious post-purchase action taken by any OEM visavis its customers. At the very least, a verified owner of this particular model is entitled to financial compensation, including a full refund on all Fuji lenses purchased for XT-3. At worst, Fuji can be sued for the loss of income that people were counting on to earn with this camera. When VW diesel emission scandal erupted, criminal indictments were issued. This firmware malfunction is, obviously, on a much smaller scale but also unacceptable under the basic commercial contracts.

And, naturally, there are precedents as well.

Good luck with that.

I agree and think it'd be fair for x-t3 owners to receive a full refund. But I don't think anyone would have much of a leg to stand on as far as suing fuji.

Surely fujifilm has an airtight fine print which users agree to before updating their firmware, including unforeseen mishaps? As far as loss of income, I think you'd need a very specific case where someone was set to make a considerable amount of money because of the camera's autofocus, which might be a scenario that doesn't exist because other than the promo films, nobody uses these for big budget productions.

Also, it's up to the owner to either install or hold off on firmware updates. I've held off on FW updates on several products until I've heard of other users reporting success.

I am neither an XT-3 user nor a lawyer but I do think that disabling the already sold products via a software bug is pretty evil.

Exhibit A: Conspiracy theory is a term used by those guilty of things with the intention to deflect from the truth. Snowden is a professional fabricator- why would anyone believe anything he says?
Exhibit B: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2254010/

Neither proves or disproves anything, other than the proof of the existence of professional fabricators.

Camera crippling is real: Canon, Sony, and Fuji all do it, everyone knows this. The 5D3 was capable of high quality raw in 2012! Even H.264 from the 5D3 could have been vastly better. Sony's still 8-bit and overheats? Fuji lost its focus and they can't fix after over 6 months? Timing of other camera releases just a coincidence? Maybe Panasonic at least tries to be better, but for whatever reason can't get colors or autofocus right. Outside the cartel, Black Magic, ZCam, and Kinefinity appear to be doing the best they can with the resources they have available (no crippling, though quality control is an issue).

Here's a test giving a glimpse of what's coming, which is the end of giant/heavy/crippled cameras:

It's iPhone 11 vs. 1DX II + lens. Which is which?

I own a 1DX II and a bunch of Canon L lenses. Am I bummed that tiny cameras in phones will soon outperform the 1DX II and similar cameras using computational camera systems? On a romantic level perhaps, however the phone form factor as a camera is terrible (can rig one up to be ok). I do a lot of portrait work and the computational cameras don't match the 1DX II yet. However I can see that it's only a few generations away before I won't need to use something like a 1DX II to get acceptable results.

IMO the camera cartel ought to go all out and cut all crippling and make the best cameras they can before it's too late and the market is completely gone. Maybe Sony will release an uncrippled A7S III with 10-bit (or more), low RS, and no overheating (and further improved color science)?

For all the X-T3 owners with post-purchase crippled AF- I have empathy for you, that's a major bummer. If your camera is still under warranty, you can look into getting a refund via the Song Beverly Act: http://www.lemonlawcourt.com/song-beverly-consumer-warranty-act/. You can also probably get a refund on all the Fuji lenses you purchased too.

The iphone looks nice with photos but falls apart in low light.

I saw a video test between and Iphone 11 and BM Pocket 6k. Obviously a Pocket is far superior, but I wasn't expecting the Iphone 11 to look as bad as it did. The sharpening was terrible and I am not usually one to complain about that type of thing. That said its a tiny sensor so its not a shocker.

Yeah, phone cameras aren't there yet, though the progression of compcams is speeding up.

F it.

Sold the X-T3 and went back to the tried and true GH5.

10 bit 422, IBIS, AF is totally useable enough for what I need, and Focus peaking works just fine when i need it.

How is the latest FW for AF on the GH5 versus what the FW2.X was on the XT-3? I would think the XT-3 FW, once they fix it, will be at least as good as how it was on the FW2.X versions, if not better? I heard the latest FW for the GH5 really improved the lackluster AF?
