FS7: FS7 successor (rumours/expectations)

I want my paid-off cameras to keep working.

Yup exactly, this is the point I was trying to make. When your camera does eventually fail, you want to buy a new one that will pay itself off. Right now, that's a tricky situation as the mainline production cameras from Arri, Sony, Canon, are all half a decade old or more.

So the question becomes, does it make sense to reinvest your cash in an older model camera (something released in 2014), or try to keep the wheels moving on a camera that is on the verge of death?

That was kind of the point/direction I was trying to go with the post, as well. The “crazy” innovation cycle seems to be slowing, so buying a quality, high demand camera, even though it’s many model years old, now, is probably safe and it’ll work(continue to be in demand/accepted) at least long enough to pay it off.

A good example is a friend who just bought a P2 VariCam(last gen) last year to service one of his network clients. We’re talking about a camera model that’s ~a decade old. Now yes he bought it used and paid cash and it’s already paid itself off in use in just a few shoots(because of the cost and the rates paid by the client), but he didn’t buy it to just use for a few months or a year.

In that spirit, I don’t see the Fs7/II, F55/5 or other similar generation and capable cameras disappearing and falling out of favor “overnight”.

Or - it could be the camera layout, if it's not modular. Depending on the job.

True, and size and form. This is why I own a go-pro.

PS. The acoustic guitars have a "natural" sound. But, once you run your electric through a series of pedals, you can get a similar sound from almost all guitars. And that's before the digital modeling amps.

Something like a single coil strat and a semi hollow 335 may sound "similar" to a lay person, but to a musician they're worlds apart and easily identifiable in musical contexts, regardless of the FX used. (I should mention that when I'm not behind the lens, I'm a multi-instrumentalist with thousands of hours playing and recording under my belt, including guitar and violin. But I wish your opinion was universally held, I wouldn't have to own so many guitars!)

Ya, I agree on 335's ... was listening to Blackmore on "Wring that neck" 1970 vs his Strat sound from 1972. I actually think 335 fit him better. But modeling amps just dial in so many options ... sort of like Steve Yelin said ~, "You can dial in anything you want if you have Raw". The tech is taking over both the music and the video.

Since I'm about to finally get an FS7M2, I'm guessing it'll debut approximately 36 hours after I hit "Buy"
Haha, of course!
I've heard they will announce it only once you buy FS7II (they've got their sources in bh, abelcine and adorama)

"Sony will be releasing a successor to the FS7 camera with a 6k full frame sensor and dual-base ISO this December,
the current prototype’s name is the FX9. Announcement is coming in mid September."

Seems very plausible. The price will probably something like 2x FS7 with FS7II staying in the lineup.

The FS7 was announced at IBC in September for a mid October delivery. I'm expecting an announcement this year for a replacement for the f5/55. This could be it.

Think of it this way...

...if it’s announced in September, it won’t really get into people’s hands until Oct/Nov. And it won’t face much real world testing for a few months after that point. Add another 6-8 months for the inevitable bugs to get patched, and it’ll be late 2020 before it really becomes mainstream!

Either way the FS72 is a glorious camera and no doubt has a long life ahead of it.

All Sony have to have in "FX9" are all the FS7 features, add full frame and AF from A9 to have a unique offering that will sell like hot cakes.

Canon is supposed to be coming out with a C500 MKII - form, features and price yet to be revealed. What is likely is that these two cameras will not occupy the same price tier. IOW, if one of them is $8,000 - $10,000, the other will be ~ $16,000 - $20,000 and, if C500 MKII is a mini-C700, then it will be the one at the higher level of the two.

And FS-9, presuming that's the model name, will be a new FS-7.

PS. Just looking at the markets.

It would be nice if they could correct few problems in the FS7
- white balance in Cine EI
- show the name of user LUT's in EVF

Dual ISO could allow us to use Log in lower light . That would be nice.

A side note on full frame.

Just shoot F4.. its not a problem if you want an S35 look!

F4 lenses are cheap.

ps I think the canon looks very very good. I guess the sony will be not as good but 2/3 the price.

I hope sony fx9 will have the same detachable sensor part than venice (cool for small room place or gimbal work), good AF (eye tracking), IBIS, raw light codec recording, a way to change lenses with only one hand, variable electronic nd filter, dual iso and 6k full frame.

I see there is also a Fx6
Fs5 with FS7 specs? That might be a camera I would prefer.
SonyAlphaRumours claim the FX6 is S35.
The reseller that seems to have leaked info (see other thread) claims FX6 is full frame though.
Names should suggest they’ll have same sensor size I think.
I really hope it’s Full Frame, as that would be my choice too.
