FS7: FS7 successor (rumours/expectations)

To be real. Didn't Sony intend the design concept for the FS7 to be a single person documentery style tool and not really intended to be used in bigger productions? Then if we users find the FS7 to be an economical tool to do it all and starts to complain, then it's maybe used in a way Sony didn't design it to do? Just saying there are tools for this and tools for that but few things can do it all.

I think this makes plenty of sense. The FS7 and C300ii basically own the majority of owner-operator/corporate/freelance cam op/contenty space between them.

The Canon has essentials like timecode built into it, the FS7 does not.

An F5 makes far more sense to me, if that's the world you live in. But because of the whole F5 1080p/4k debacle, the FS7 swept up a HUGE chunk of those F5 sales when it appeared on the scene.

For people who already have the FS7 though, selling it an replacing it with an F5 - is unlikely to add up financially. Being able to add all of the ENG functionality to the FS7 though, is an easier sell.

Its called the F5?

Sony are indeed really in a hole with the Fs8 without it killing the F5/55 or being a tiny worthless upgrade.

Maybe they should just cut the cost of the 5/55 as thier next radical move or merge the two lines.

Or they need a proper new concept in cameras.. AF for cinematography, built in wireless everything. (audio receivers, vision out)

haha Agreed ! I was going to say..then it would be an f5..

Personally I think the added ENG kit Sony presented doesn't make sense at all. To late, to expensive, to clumsy. News gathering production might look upon it as a viable alternative to a real ENG camera but for us owners not a chance.

I said it in semi-jest but the F-65 sensor, no longer revolutionary after nearly a decade since its release, with a vastly improved low light performance/dual gain and a full set of the compressed Raw codecs would make sense in the $15,000-$20,000 range, which is currently inhabited by Varicam LT, an entry level Red package and a bunch of run-on sentences morphing into a paragraph.

Technically, Canon could jump into that niche first with a stripped down version of the s35 C700. Let's name it NorBro1C400HAL9. Whether it will or not remains to be seen.

this.

Sony is hawking gizmos instead of updates because the camera remains relatively unchallenged.

This ENG kit makes a gently used F5 look like an even better value. The only big selling point for an FS7 is the E-mount, which offers so much more versatility over the 5's FZ mount options.

I think plenty of busy owner-ops that do a lot of run and gun would be very tempted by this kit, despite the price. The F cams ENG build up kit came down in price after awhile and can be found on the used market.

Options are good.

^ Agree with this... but would also point out that for owner-ops like myself - who bought the FS7 when it first appeared - or at least have already owned for a couple of years - if you needed most of this kits functionality - then you've likely already invested in other gear to make it happen (other broadcast lens adapters, and v-mount/gold mount add-ons, etc.). So, this is maybe geared toward a different market? Or to compete with BM more directly perhaps? Not sure how many TV markets in the US would opt for the FS7 ENG kit vs say a Z280 ?

My FS7 is still heavily requested but there are plenty of easy ways to upgrade it without having to completely redesign the camera. Better color (especially on skin), a nicer EVF, less noise, in-body timecode and the vari-ND from the MkII would make it a no-brainer purchase for me. I'd then keep my MkI as a B-cam.

Was hoping something like this would drop but no biggie.

This ENG thing is lol funny. I thought it was April Fools.

Probably looked a great idea on a PowerPoint presentation in the boardroom, but Christ on bike, did any end uses want this?

You wonder who advises these companies. Not professional filmmakers that’s for sure.

When Juan Martinez was still at Sony he was very active in soliciting the input of users on what improvements they would like on the FS7. Likewise Sony still had their user forum. However even back then Juan implied to me that the design group was in their own world and that insularity might have increased even more. Sure seems apparent in this "big update" when there are plenty of small inexpensive changes that would improve the functionality of the camera a great deal. Admittedly though I don't have any inside info. Doubt they'll sell a lot of these - but perhaps they make more sense in Japan?

I think this is a great idea for broadcast markets. For stations or shooters who want to migrate away from traditional ENG rigs to Super 35. This clearly isn't intended for filmmakers. Also, has anyone else noticed the new SXS cards for HFR 4k? That tells me there's a new camera with a new flavour of XAVC on the horizon that does 4K @ 120fps.

Isn’t that the new broadcast cameras that wereannounced? I doubt those are for a cinema camera.

Or maybe for the Venice 4K 120fps update?

The Venice will do 4K @ 120fps but only in 2.39:1 and only in X-OCN which uses the AXSM cards. Those new HDC cameras for strictly for OB or studio TV work. I'm betting were going to see an F5/F55 replacement this fall that will use these new cards. At the moment none of Sony's cameras offer 4K HFR in XAVC beyond 60P.

I don't see that. Broadcast companies like simplicity. They like repeatable, easy to follow solutions. They like cameras they can train a PA to use in a day. They don’t do modularity. They don’t like complex.

The point here is; Sony need to build on the success of the FS7. They hit the sweet spot of a lot of productions with this camera, so build on that, don’t try and segue it into areas it doesn’t work in. A solid step upgrade is what is needed right now. Not this nonsense.

As someone that straddles the line and comes from a broadcast background, this implementation is absolutely horrible. They finally gave the 7 a good VF set-up, but the rest is almost as bad as any frankenrig.

Viewfinder looks nice and is probably the one from the F5 but... it's a 960x540 LCD panel priced at 3800$.

Whereas... new Zacuto Kameleon is a 1920x1080 OLED viewfinder costing 1950$ (just taken for example)

Math should be simple on this one and everyone should stop wanting the Sony one, right ? Even if it's priced under 2K$, it would still be an overpriced piece of crap right ?

Just keeping original EVF screen to access menu and have a 3rd party real eyepiece should be the right thing to do.

Agreed - simple, compact, numpty-proof and consistent - so they can create multiple kits, all in the same bags, with the microphone and battery chargers in the same pockets etc. Pull out of the bag, switch on and shoot - no fettling around with swing arms and grips. C300s always been popular for this reason.

Baffling design decision made by Sony, 5 years into the product life. Even more so that you have to buy the whole bloated kit.

Been an entertaining read on here, though.

Where's Doug gone? :-)
