FS7: FS7 matching AMIRA

So is this LUT something that you can apply and adjust brightness if needed and have a finished look, or does this LUT need work with adding contrast and saturation and so on?

That's opening a real can of worms right now :)

+1

For any LUT, I usually add a bit of tweaks - contrast, saturation, color curves - when I have control of things.

BertLUT comes in handy when you have to hand off footage to clients and they want a burned in look. It gets them most of the way and regularly, they use it as it if it's fast turnaround. It also works well as a Monitor LUT.

I tried the LUTs at some footage from last month. Exterior shots in a grey Norwegian winter really looked great. This is the conditions I will shoot a lot of stuff in the next few months and I will try it out tomorrow "for real"
I'm really pleased to get rid of the magenta cast, specially skin tones looked much improved from Sonys LUTs.
Baked in looks are important to me when using the FS7, as I'm using them almost exclusively on quick turnaround jobs, as I'm lucky enough to bring out my Dragon for all other type of jobs.
I have been bitching a bit about the FS7, but I have to say that with the V3.0 and these LUTs it's really starting to mature.

I've been using Bert Degraeve's standard 709 Arrilook LUT on my F5 today. I was lucky because it was the last days shoot of a series shot entirely by Amira's with their 709 look. It'll be very interesting to hear what the editors and colourists think about the way they match. Must say, to my untrained eye, these LUTs do look good. A much better match than I thought was possible out of my old F5 !!!

Paul.. did you burn in the LUT,or supply it to post.. does Bert give the grey/white levels for his LUTs.. or they are the same as the Sony LC709A..

Thanks

PS thanks for the hack, I mean adjustment :),saved me having to trade in my F5 for a F55.. !

Hi Donny,

I had to burn the LUTs in... because that's what the Amira guys had been doing. I've not seen any specs for grey/white levels but from my own tests they do not look the same as LC709A:

LC709A - @ 18% grey = 40% IRE and 90% white = 71% IRE
709Arrilook - @ 18% grey = 44% IRE and 90% white = 73% IRE

So it looks to me to be a much flatter smoother curve than LC709A. The detail in the shadows certainly looks improved and it's now where near as 'contrasty' as LC709A. (in other words - less video looking)

You can probably tell I like it a lot... but everyone should do their own tests!

Ok many thanks sir.. Ive just ordered the set of 3 from Bert.. seems 20 shekels well spent.. I see Ben,s idea share and share alike.. but its a very small amount to pay and he did do the leg work.. if it was a mate you might buy them a curry and a few beers.. pretty much the same token.. same as I buy a beer for Alister on his site.. its just a sign of appreciation really.. rather than a business deal..

I get the whole charging argument… and whether it’s right to simply charge for adjusting someone else product, but the bottom line is, Bert has obviously invested time and effort into producing something that others think is worth paying for. I don’t mind donating, what is a very small amount, to compensate him for his time. After all, I would have charged for the F5 4K hack if I hadn’t believed Sony would’ve taken me to the cleaners !!!

Yes, the more I use BertLUTs, the more I appreciate it. Such a good advancement for the FS7. Everyone I know from various forums loves it. Indispensable IMO. Definitely gets it much more ballpark Amira than before. Very nice curve. The colors and much quicker grading are just, wow....

Just to clarify is it a modified version of Sony's LC709a LUT or has it been built from scratch?
Only Bert would be able to tell us that... On his blog he says he tweaked Sony's LC709A, but looking at it with Ben Turley's LUTCalc, I'd say it's quite different.
However, does it make a difference where he started? What he's done is given us a closer match to the Arri with burnt in 709 than Sony was capable of !!!

It does when you're selling it. If I take an Impulz LUT and change the gamma curve and saturation I'm pretty sure I am not then within my rights to sell it on. Don't know if that is what has been done though.

I've no idea why I'm being so contrary about this. Not usually this much of a curmudgeon about these type of things...

Vote with your wallet and either buy it or don't buy it. That's all.

I've no intention of buying it. I was just asking if someone has taken someone else's product, modded it and is now selling it.

EDIT: Ah sod it I'll shush and leave this thread alone now, which I promised to do pages ago.
