FS7: FS7 matching AMIRA

The Brits shouldn't buy any Japanese Cars or motor bikes either.. unless they want them to start in the cold and not leak oil :)

Its just for the guys time.. people charge for their time.. I do.. not for doing anything new..

Will be going for this LUT in the next week I'm sure! Look forward to it!

This made me try tweaking lc709a myself in Resolve actually. Saturation bump, midtones VERY slightly towards red (ish), and a touch more contrast. Surprisingly happy with how it looks in cam (did another version exactly the same, but with the blacks a bit higher for darker scenes so I don't crush anything).
Will be interesting to see how it turns out, will be burning these in tomorrow for a wedding! (I'm not doing the post, and 99% of the weddings I shoot for people, they don't have time for much post work.. so straight out of cam is what they want)

Very un-scientific test, but definitely a big difference - Incredible what can be done these cameras! Definitely looking forward to getting into this a lot more.

It does when you're selling it. If I take an Impulz LUT and change the gamma curve and saturation I'm pretty sure I am not then within my rights to sell it on. Don't know if that is what has been done though.

Seeing as all Impulz LUTs are formulated from film scans by Kodak, Fuji, etc... and I doubt they are paying any royalties for the looks they "borrow." No worse than tweaking LC709a which is Sony's attempt to emulate the Alexa look, which is based on film scans from Arri's vault. Which they are ALL charging money for.

None of this stuff is original. Might as well pay 20 Euro and have something that will give you a great base / workflow to start with. Why fight it so hard? BertLUT is a good thing and very cheap as well for what you get.

Sometimes I like BertLUT, sometimes I still like LC709a. It's nice to have quick options.

Just put the BertLUTs into my F5/CN7 combo.. nice indeed.. cant decide if I like the slightly warmer film like or the balanced.. dont see Burt heading for the Bentley show room anytime soon.. just nice he offers them around at about 7 Euro,s each..a sound recordist will pay twice as much for a donut..

It was never anything to do with whether the end product is value for money or not. Certainly your examples look nice. And I wasn't trying to get people not to buy it and I wasn't 'fighting hard' at least in my own mind. I am clearly in the minority (of one) in my feelings about sharing vs charging the community and your fellow peers so it is obvious that it's a 'me' problem of perception and not an 'everyone else' one.

Enjoy :)

I'm with you Ben. The whole internet community is about sharing and doing it for free. I would never charge for things I come up with. I'm either sharing or keeping it for myself. Especially when we all want to learn more about things we work with. Imagine what if each thread or post on a blog had a fee attached.

I for myself don't have the skills to create these LUTs.
I appreciate the effort and the work s.o. spends and if it helps to support him with this small amount I am willing to do so.
I prefer spending my contribution instead of keeping it for himself. Everybody might decide for himself if it's worth or not.

No, not really Ben. I am understanding of your opinion about sharing.

Forums are definetly about sharing. But the maker of these LUTs arent on here, or have i missed something?

Would definetly be nice if he would share them for free. But he charges 20 bucks and im perfectly ok with that. Certainly cheaper than if i would rent an Amira to do the matching myself ! :-)

I have asked Doug to make a Resolve tutorial, where he should not talk about the tools in Resolve, but how to apply them to make stuff looks nice. Sure, Doug could do a snippet here and there for free. But i would much rather pay 50 bucks and get a complete package with hours of learning in one go. Much like the FS7 FS5 videoes of his. Those were great!

But he wasn't touting his stuff on this forum.. or even a member.. I think he has posted once since.. its from his site.. his LUTs were mentioned by the original OP wasn't it.. sort of throws the argument out the window really.. so what about Doug? Star central ? ..(I think they have very right to charge if they want to.. they did the work)... and come on $20 is a donation .. for 3 LUTs.. and how many hours .. if you dont want them dont pay.. for me its a very good deal.. and saves me the time and effort .. I think its more selfish had he just kept them to himself personally ..

The 'community' is not exclusive to DVXUser and unless someone says differently, the 'maker' of these LUTs appears to be Sony with some tweaks by someone else.

Doug's business is producing courses for money and what you are asking him to produce is a million miles away in terms of effort/time/cost from someone tweaking a LUT.

But do your thing guys. I just appear to have a particular bee in my bonnet about this.

And where did Sony get the LC709A LUT from ..Arri very blatantly .. that argument really doesn't hold water .. and yes I paid for the tweaks .. thats the whole point ..

Sony Slog3.. from LogC .. from Cineon

It all came from somewhere else..

Good for you. I hope it works well for you.

You don't have to defend or reason yourself or your choices to me. Do what you like. I am not judging you or anyone who buys or doesn't buy them.

I just have an issue with it these types of sale. Has no bearing or judgement on anyone else.

I can't see the problem with getting compensated for the time and money he spent to develop the LUT. He rented an Amira for the match, right? Sounds fair too me. Unless somebody is jealous he is making a little cash on the side. I will definitely check the LUT out. It obviously can't turn a FS7 into an Amira but looks much better than normal FS7 footage or the 709A LUT.
As a side note it's interesting what time can do. When the 709A LUT came out FS7 users were acting as if they just got handed a free Arri camera. If you said it looked nothing like an Arri they would jump on you. Now I see some of the same people saying the 709A LUT is not that good and doesn't look like Arri. Good to see people seeing the reality for a change.

Absolutely. In the same way for the past 6 months half the people on DVXUser have been shouting from the rooftops about how the Ursa Mini 4.6k was the Red Killer, and how it could get you 95% of an Arri for one gazillianth the money, despite people saying perhaps to actually wait until it comes out...

Turns out there's a diverse bunch on here with a widely varying amount of experience and knowledge. And some people don't even know how much they don't know.

I also agree. While not 'wrong' to charge for them the fact that someone (Ben) made LUTcalc for like 3 euros on Appstore (at first I believe it was free) sort of makes these LUTs fade. Also dont call it "donation" when its not.
And that's why I'm a little bit on Ben Scott side. Cameramanben spent tremendous amount of time and work on LutCalc building that from scratch and yet he is charging less then 5 dollars for it (software worth at least more then $100 in my opinion). He was even explaining WHY he is charging money for it (to finance developer license for AppStore).

I have no issue paying for something I'm not willing to do myself or am not capable of. What someone wants to charge is up to them and then I decide if its worth it to me. What is your time worth? The hours I saved purchasing a lut I liked more than payed for itself in the amount of paying work I did instead of tweaking lut colours.

I am sure he will be happy to receive your missing 97$
(if he wants them not for himself he can forward them to deserving poor)
