What I'm most interested in is the "look". Different cameras with different sensors have a different look. Sure you can color grade the footage and change it significantly, but IMO the basic look you start with does matter.


And I"m not talking about the resolution. Once you put both on Vimeo or youtube the resolution isn't a big deal.

So I'm really interested to see what the 4k FS700 footage looks like.

6995 euros is $9k here in Australia. Hopefully we don't get unfairly ripped off and it comes in at under 10k including gst. Then I'd probably buy one to go with the fs100 and the 7d can finally go into retirement as the b-cam.
Anyone noticed the sensor colour is now red and not green. Hopefully that means they have fixed the sensor reflection issue.

It's a little earlier for that. Have they fixed the highlight handling (possibly), how about the high contrast aliasing in highlights, how's the low level performance compared to those huge FS100 pixels. How about sensor reflections with those internal NDs?

Even the C300 which is supersampled has similar highlight issues.

It's still 1080p and there have been NO images whatsoever from it!

I would imagine that these areas are all improved but would wait to see some actually real world tests

Yep- and this will be a lot down to the sensor size/design.
I like F3 look a lot- not a fun of "old" RED look. EPIC is better.
 
can one of the mods merge the 3 fs700 threads? it would make following the camera much easier.
 
I know the camera records 8-bit internally, but will it put out a 10-bit signal over SDI? That is my question at this point. Also, does anyone know if it can be genlocked for stereo work?

No - 8bit apparently. The 4K RAW output will be 12-bit though.

Glad that someone else rather than just myself is asking this! Unfortunately, the answer is "No" again... sucks because the camera looks brilliant for 3D otherwise. I did put in my 2c here and on the AbelCine blog... you'd think Sony wants 3D to succeed, given that they sell 3D TVs and all. WTF.

Panasonic, let's see if you can do it right with like an AF700 or something?

Just came home from a long shooting day (no not the FS700 - just a comercial with the FS100). Im pretty toasted and it´s half past 12 in the night.

So just a brief word on picture quality: My FS100 just looks a bit SD now.

Once you tasted downsampled 4k it´s hard to go back.

I write a review tomorrow and keep you posted, once it´s online.

So it definitely yields more resolution than the FS100 @ 1080. But is it similiar to the big boys like F3 and C300?

The colour depth is limited by the ADC of the sensor. While the F65 supposedly has a 16-bit ADC, there is no evidence that Red actually uses a 16-bit ADC, I would assume that if was a 16-bit ADC they would advertise it more, as they are a fairly boastful company. Meaning that if the sensor is only outputting 12 or 14-bits there is little benefit in storing it in a 16-bit file. Same goes for 4:4:4 & 4:2:2, you can store it in 4:4:4, but it doesn't mean that the camera sensor is actually outputting that.

For the Phantom cameras, that also allow high-speed shots to be externally recorded via HD-SDI, the video gets cached on internal RAM that is outputted via HD-SDI and stored on an external recorder (Phantom's Cinemag). The Flex has 16-32GB on internal RAM to cache video, below 450fps it can write directly to Cinemag, above that it needs to be cached, at 1,000 fps, the 16GB of data can only store 4 seconds of footage in cache.

You can do it already. The Hot Rod Tuner-S Kit is already FS700 compatible :)

I'm also negotiating a deal with a re-seller to bundle the Hot Rod Tuner-S kit with the FS700 at a serious package savings. Will announce pre-order details after NAB and before the camera starts shipping. If you are thinking about pre-ordering a FS700 somewhere without the Hot Rod deal, you'll want to be sure that you can cancel without penalty. The Sony/Hot Rod deal is unprecedented!

This is speculation of course, but kind of a damper if true:

"The external 4K recorder will be provided by Sony. I’m expecting it won’t be a cheap add on. Even if the firmware update itself is free, the external recorder is likely to be an expensive bit of kit until third party ones spring up. I’m expecting the 4K capability to add around $5k at a guess maybe more. Sony have a keen eye on the pricing of their competitors and the Scarlet-X is not ready to roll until you hit roughly $15k."

Nice that more companies are jumping into the 4k market, but not that big of a deal if it's priced the same as Scarlet to shoot 4k.
 
Don't you all find it a little odd that Sony has now officially announced the camera with no real information whatsoever and we're left hunting for hints and snippets of info from pre production beta testers. As far as product launches go this has to be one of the worst ever seen. Where's the actual product launch briefing videos (that the FS100 had) where's the detail?

Why they didn't wait for NAB i have no idea, i presume the recorders and timelines will be shown then. Perhaps they're refreshing the F3 too (which would make sense)

There's a reason they put out this press release with minimal info. Technically Canon did the same thing with their 4K DSLR. We have been left hunting for info till now. The tease Sony has given with this cam has me looking hard at them as I'm ready to upgrade. Fortunately for me I'm not locked into any lens system right now as I use to be prior to my AF100. It will drive lots of traffic to their booth during NAB as interest will be high.

I see it as a timing issue. Gotta get it out there before NAB even if the cams not ready. Granted, it's a little ridiculous putting it out soooo far from being ready, but I can see the logic in doing that also.
(X amount of people will wait to buy cam X if the hardware is done and all thats needed is a firmware update to shoot/record 4K) (provided they don't have firmware problems and NEED to upgrade hardware to make it work acceptably)

All in all, looks like a nice camera with some interesting features, but I have to shoot in the present day. What's coming out in the next 2, 6, 12, 18 months.......ehhhh
