Fresh meat

Huh, cant say I enjoyed this one too much. I felt the rape scene was completely tasteless and unnecessary to show. Subtly is the key, my friend.. even for the overly-used exploitation genre.
Furthermore, scenes that could have been twice as short, werent. I understand keeping things slow and intense... but I dont think the effect worked as well as it could have in this case, it just sort of dragged to me. Think in general it would have greatly benefited from some cleaner editing, cutting away extra fat of the... Fresh Meat ;)
Couple awkward edits where when she gets hit by the car and turns around, she looks like she isnt even moving on the cycle. Then at the end when he turns around and doesnt swing, but that was probably intentional i'm assuming.
Otherwise, I got the vibe you were going for, so if this was your true vision, then I say you did it justice.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Jace... If FRESH MEAT left a bad taste in your mouth, then I hit my mark. This was SUPER tame compared to most exploitation films of the 70's, I suspect that you're a little too young to have been around for those. I'd recommend you don't watch them, you probably wouldn't like them. (example: "I Spit on your Grave") I also think you missed the point completely, the idea was to recreate a 70's film, in a 70's style... I think you're comparing it to more modern productions. A LOT has changed since the 70's my friend. In my research for this film I watched a ton of these films, most had the same pace, edit style and were made on the cheap...besides, all us kids going to the drive-in were only there to makeout!

All of these comments really help out in the long run...that's why I like these fests! Cheers

While I'm admittedly only in my mid-20s, most of my favorite movies have come from the 70s and 80s (Alien and The Godfather being amongst my favorites). I just dont dig rape just to have rape lol
But I see what you're saying.
In a weird sort of way, I actually found it more funny than I did scary or gritty. Mainly because of the deliberate grindhouse style, awkward edits, hokey acting ect.

It's all good Jace... I laughed my ass off at most of the 70's exploiation films I watched too.

I don't think Aliens and The Godfather are the genre Zaza is talking about or basing his film off of. In addition, the scene where she turns and gets hit IS in fact nearly identical to the retro 70's films. In fact, having grown up with these films personally, I thought this was "the" scene that showcased what he was going for. Time, budget, equipment and even talent used when making this film... I thought this was a great film. Lastly, I understand we all have our tastes and have a standard of what we digest for our entertainment but I thought Zaza took a major risk, if not the biggest of all the films shooting that rape scene and he pulled it off.

Hey man nice work sir.

Some great shots.

Faves include the spinning bicycle wheel and the sunlight and dust motes through the cracks in the barn roof - maybe on of the best shots ever on user?

Agree with others that you captured a nice 70s exploitation vibe.
Also feel that it could be trimmed significantly. Some of the shots and suspense don't hold as long as you stay on them iMHO.

SPOILERS

After the reveal, I didn't understand why a vamp would put up with a second of this. You've deflected the criticism before by saying that she's driven to the edge and then breaks and changes. But for most of us the edge would be pre-rape and torture. Or the second the torture or rape starts - for sure. Maybe she's like the hulk or something and she's trying not to change and be good or something? That's interesting but we have no way of knowing that. It's basically like showing someone get kidnapped and raped and tortured - then AFTER all that you reveal they had a gun in their ankle holster, easily within reach the whole time. At which point we ask why not shoot the guy before he rapes you or at least brandish your gun (your fangs) to get him to back off. Again maybe once the fangs are out there's no stopping her and she's trying to be a good vampire but all we know is that, at the end, you reveal to us that she's infinitely more powerful than her captor but literally laid back and let it all happen - so you lost me there, sir.

Again, great vibe and some great shots!

First off... thank you for even watching, let alone commenting on the film! MOST appreciated.

I guess I was thinking more "Carrie" on this one... she was trying to be a good monster until she just couldn't take it any more.
It wasn't until she realized he was going to 'clever' her that pushed her over the edge. I missed my mark, live & learn.

Cool. Yeah what you're saying makes sense.

This is always an extensive conversation on most of the stuff I shoot.
"We're being too obvious with this."
"No way they'll ever get this we need to make it clearer."
"Well they may not get this but that doesn't matter as long as they get this."
"Maybe but if they don't get that too then it will seem like we overlooked it."
etc. etc. etc.

I've erred both ways.

Again, cool vibe man.

Joe my old friend.......

Finally got around to watching the whole thing. Solid, technical work, but I'm afraid I must echo a few of the negative critiques. But first the positive:

-the transition from the zazavision logo to the first shot is note-perfect.
-The spinning bike wheel shot was awesome
-The dust shimmering through the cracks in the wall round 3:13
-The use of the ol' DVX. wonderful! for the purposes of youtube you pulled it off well. I'm sure this would look good on the big screen as well. some nice grading.
-There is some nice editing trickery/flashes of light, screen distortions....whatever you did it works nicely for me.

The bad:
-Definitely could have been cut down. This does drag a bit. If you are trying to emulate the pacing of grindhouse 70's films so be it, but it didn't work for me.
-The exact same sentiment JDS wrote after "spoilers" Could not have said it better so i won't.
-The rape scene. (Jace summed up my thoughts as well) I'm not as well versed in the grindhouse genre from the 70's. Not my bag. Times have changed I understand. I'm not into the whole torture/horror genre.

I think you've shot & directed better.....but this one has its moments. I'd score the cinematography higher than the story.

Hey thanks Scott... I appreciate ALL comments & glad you made it through the whole film. :D
I assure you no one was injured in the making of the film! (I did put a warning up at the opening of the film)

I think everyone looks forward to Joe's entry. We just know it's going to be fun in a good way, good in a fun way.

I've seen those gnomes in another film? Are there subliminal message inserted? Is this safe to watch while eating?

:)
