Fisheye comparison using HMC150

I used to be like Thomas until I actually started using one. A fisheye gives you a completely different perspective on things. Not every shot will look good with it, but it can give an otherwise ordinary shot a new and fresh perspective.

agree'd. vignetting is not acceptable in my opinion. makes it look very unprofessional.

i'm not 100% happy with my century lens, but it works. i don't like threading on lenses, so i just have to deal with it. so what other options are left? century extreme?

i refuse to get that lens for two reasons, 1, its got vignetting. it may be a small amount(top amd bottom), but its a $2800 lens and if i'm paying that much for a piece of glass it better be perfect.
2. its $2800 and not perfect.

100% agreed, you pretty much said what i wanted to say, but couldnt haha. thanks.

zoomed to z20

and i havent gotten the sunshade off yet so i will be able to get wider and that little extra bit of vig in bottom right will disappear. and i was pretty damn close on this one so im guessing it's wider than the other 2 fish options

When zooming in you're effectively losing the fisheye effect. So at z20 you have pretty much lost most of the extreme fisheye angle. The optimal solution is to have a lens which does not show any vignetting and still have a ulta wide angle perspective.

the thing is this thing is ridiculously wide at z0 and even at about z15 and z20 the sunshade is out of the shot as well as much of the vignetting and it is still super wide. yes i know what a fish is supposed to be like

I think this lens shows major promise. That's all probably in the overscan area anyway.. and would be easy to remove in post. Can you shoot some footage.

This is what I want... i think anything more than a .55 will have some vignetting of some degree... But this price is SWEET>

"Ridiculously wide" does not exist. Even if it has got 180° of horizontal viewing angle (which is doesn't have) you would lose a pretty good deal when zooming into z20. Of course it's still wide angle at z20, but a fisheye is supposed to be more than just wide angle.

If you're happy with it, that's sweet, I just wanted to state some of my experiences.

By the time you zoom in far enough to rid yourself of the vignetting, you've also eliminated the fisheye effect; you might as well use a wide angle at this point. Not to mention that zooming in to a fisheye can't be good for producing sharp images...

That's not true. The century has 0.45x without vignetting and the extreme fish is at 0.3x almost without vignetting. So it is possible.

Well sorry for that. I had the .55 for the HVX and I did really like the lens a lot, so I thought with the 150 being wider that it would be about the .55 range.

But haveing seen footage of this cam, its not really a fisheye in the truest sense. It's more of an extreme wide. It's more of what I want actually. The fisheye major barrell distorting is something I think it way too gimicky and I'd only use that if I were shooting skating or some action sports.

I also didn't like the .60 wide angle as it's too heavy and had soft corners.

This is the kind of shot that I want to get with the 150 as I got this with my HVX:

cheers strobe. That's what I want, but at the other fisheye price. I"m being cheap this year. We'll have to see what I will pick up. I need both a wide/fish and a teleconverter. Had both century products for the HVX and those buggers didn't or wouldn't make any bayoneet adapters so I could use 'em. They want me to buy all new stuff... darn them! But I will see where the money goes soon.

You gotta love that stock lens....

I thought it would have been better if you had done some stills outside.

i will post some footage up when i get a chance to get some throwaway clips, right now i'm in the middle of filming a full length film for a company and all the clips are are really good and i can't leak them, regardless if it's to a bunch of guys who don't skate =X
