GH4 First look at 24p anamorphic & V-Log on GH4

While I think the anamorphic mode is cool, it will likely be 2016 before Veydra has a full set of low cost M4/3 lenses available. And by low cost I mean around $5K each. Maybe it's just my frugal side, but if I'm going to spend $20K on a set of lenses, I don't want to be stuck only being able to shoot with a M4/3 sensor. And the Cooke's at $30K each are likely out of the budget of your average GH4 user. I'd also be willing to bet, that if a project has the production/post budget to rent a set of Cooke anamorphics, they also have the budget in place to rent an Alexa. What's a boy to do?

I just want to see a well lit shot of a person's face to see how it handles skin tones.

Since V-Log is basically a flat picture profile intended for deeper post coloring, all you are really going to see is someones interpretation of skin tones, which may or may not be to your liking.

There's also the SLR Magic 2x :

"I promise you we will have more information coming up...We are hard at work to offer you a log profile."
That is, indeed, very promising!

Combine V-Log L with the SoundDevices PIX-EH recorder (only $1200) and the right lens and you could get DCI 4K 2x Anamorphic LOG 10-bit 4:2:2 footage straight out of a GH4!

I still don't see how this log curve can add 2 whole extra stops to the image. U can push the sensor to it's max with the curent firmware. And it clearly show the max DR is where it is. And it's mostly limited by the noise floor. In my DR test (you can find it here in the GH section) I saw that the last stops are completely inside the noise floor. So the only way of having more DR so to speak is by lowering the noise floor and I dont see that happening. So this leaves us whith the highs. Am I supose to believe that they are pulling 2 extra stops from the highs that were/are clipped in all the other picture profiles? Honestly all that I can believe is that the PERCEIVED DR is going to increase and nothing else regarding DR.

Signal processing however I hope gets improved.

And for 200$... I dont know. Im quite happy whith the Natural picture profile. Will have to see a comparison between the two.

It's the same in video. 13 stops. 2 of those stops are in the noise floor. It's why I said that the only way to expand the DR is by lowering the noise floor. Which I don't see happening. Other way is by a better distribution, of avaliable stops, over the gamma curve. But this will not expand the absolute DR it will only expand perceived DR. Which is also nice btw.

Right... In video mode, GH4 has 13 stops absolute DR and 11 stops usable DR. All that that video shows is that for Vlog you have to expose differently than for CineD. Which means that Vlog is compressing the highs a lot more than CineD is. Which is a good thing, becaise this means that you can expose higher and bring the bottom stops out of the noise flor, which in end has a resoult of expanding DR.
As I said before, it looks like it's allocating the light differently over the gamma curve, which resoults in more (of the already avaliable DR) being usable.

You are not expending your absolute DR, you are making it more usable. At least this is how it looks to me at this point.

Either way, this is a good thing!:)

Oh, and btw, the compression in Vlog is, if anything, bigger than in a more straight gamma curve. RAW is something different altogether.
