GH4 First look at 24p anamorphic & V-Log on GH4

So it's safe to assume then that the GH4 was never meant to have Log?

This has been a known fact since the beginning. It was developed for the new VariCam. It coming to the GH4 has always been a mod or a "port" of some kind. It's no surprise they are being careful to get it right and stable, and they should be commended for that instead of being berated or constantly whined at by the ignorant and/or entitled.

When the GH4 shipped, it had CineD.
But just because, they didn't intend on it having Log at conception, doesn't mean adding it later on is a hack. The design process I outlined has to happen with every single feature for any product. When you do the math and stuff doesn't pass the smell test with the hardware you have, it needs to be kicked. But more than likely, they did their design with future features in mind, and left processor utilization at around 70-75%, so there is room for features like V-Log, or something else that they never originally thought of.

My rant is just to give the non-engineers a peek into alllllllllll the crap that has to happen, when you add features to shipping products. Trust me, I do this all damn day!

I think people have some right to be upset by all this jerking around with V-log, but the people to be upset with are the bloggers and rumour websites who spread false or incomplete information about when it would be available. Panasonic actually didn't say anything about this update. The only official word was the rep at NAB who answered a question when pressed about it, and all he said was 'it's being evaluated'.

You know, your point was interesting. Until this part.

Can we get over this, already? This is getting really corny. You're whining about the whiners, now. We get it. The rest of us are deranged, ignorant fools with anger and arrogance problems, you're all masters of the Universe with all-knowing foresight and have the unshakable patience of Chess grand-masters. Drop the moral high-ground complex, already.

That's really interesting. The design process you outlined makes it look like such a struggle, which I'm sure it is. But that only makes one wonder; why not just build it from the ground up to handle Log - the way Blackmagic does? Surely that would cause much less headaches and stress for all the designers involved?

I'm not whining. Whining would be making multiple posts complaining about the same thing without fully understanding it because I'm unhappy with not getting what I want. Sorry if using "ignorant and/or entitled" struck a nerve, but that's exactly how the complaints of "why don't I have V-Log now this is ridiculous, Panasonic sucks!!" come across.

Spot on. I'm guilty of having the s**ts with Panasonic, and I've definitely let off a bit of steam about it. To even my own annoyance. Ha.

It was pretty much this article that started it for me, and many others: http://nofilmschool.com/2014/11/gh4-getting-high-end-logarithmic-color-profile-next-firmware-update

Which in turn was in response to a video posted by the guys at NewsShooter: http://www.newsshooter.com/2014/11/20/panasonic-gh4-v-log-picture-profile-spotted-in-the-wild/

Ah well.

Exactly. Hell, I saw some people on a FB group upset because they fire-sold their GH4 due to that suggestionofmotion April Fool's Day prank post announcing a GH5. The internet is stupid.

Also, the rep said "we are not announcing yet" so.. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Would be cool if they patched the OS to allow updateable photo styles like Canon did which gave us: CINESTYLE, MARVELS, FLAAT etc

That would be cool. We'd also be able to share each other's picture styles and so forth - and people like Samuel could get in there and weave his FLAAT magic :)

Interesting to note that the anamorphic squeeze from the GH4 is a 3328x2496 image. Not a crop of the 16:9 area, but a larger sensor capture.

Looking forward to shooting some projects in 4:3.

Or flipping the camera on it's side & shooting 3:4. Imagine some fashion clients would dig that.

Indeed. Not quite the full sensor, but larger. For 1.33x anamorphic 16:9 makes sense. For 2x it does not. So now 4:3 with additional frame rates. It will be interesting to see if the there is a difference in image quality from the PHOTO mode, although I doubt it other than what the frame rate brings to the table.

Well, check out these product design cycle steps that usually happen for every product:
- There is a product definition that states everything that marketing wants in a product. (The pipe dream)
- Engineering goes off and figures out that it will take $50 million and 5 years to develop. (The reality check)
- The marketers put down their crack pipe, prioritize must haves like to haves. (I am an alcoholic)
- Engineering figures it will take $20 million dollars and 2 years to develop. (Product gets green lighted)
- Competitor has new product with killer features, now marketer wants all shelved features in half the time. (Off the wagon)
- Engineering kills itself working 70 hour weeks for 4 months getting in 90% of the features. (Breaking point)
- Accounting states the final product is over budget by 20%, and for engineering to cost reduce. (Some engineers kill themselves)
- Cost reduction on hardware took major software rewrite, some features get pushed to the future. (Sanity ensues)
- Product it shipped, money is made, rave reviews, budget is there to add back pushed features. (Popping bottles and screwing hookers)

Of course all the stuff in parenthesis is jokes, but it kinda goes that way sometimes!!!
