Final Cut Studio 2.0 - P2 import problems

Folks,

We just got our copy of FCS 2 in the mail yesterday, and installed immediately - we're between projects so we had the time. Putting it through its paces though, we ran up against a problem. We cant seem to import any P2 footage. We had this working fine in the previous version.

We typically hook up our Firestore drive after an "organize P2" - copy the CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.TXT to our project folder, and in FCP, go to the "IMPORT -> Panasonic P2" menu item. In FCS 2, this has been changed to the "Log and Transfer" window. We select our CONTENT folder and all the clips show up fine, we can select each one and scrub and preview in the window. But drag any clip down to the Queue, and the litte circular arrow spins for a while, then turns into a red exclamation mark. We know the footage is good, we've imported it into our edius systems with no problem.

Anyone have any idea whats happening?

I was having the same issue with transporting from the camera.

For some reason, if you close down FCP and open it up again, it works fine once more. But it's really annoying and they need to fix this bug asap.

My install was from a CLEAN install. I ended up reinstalling OS X entirely so the solution probably will not be reinstalling FCS2.

I think it's a bug altogether. I haven't tried Log and Transfer from a drive yet.

Why not try Raylight for the Mac and skip the Log and transfer process altogether?

Thats not working for me either. Even after quitting and restarting FCP, the clips wont import. This is a serious showstopper - how did Apple release the software like this?

Was looking forward to playing with COLOR.

I moderate elsewhere in p2 card issues and FCP.

Your's is the very first issue I've seen.

Did you do a clean install of OS with updates and then FCS2?

Or install over the existing app?

repair permissions, and trash the FCP plist before and after the install?

RAM, OS, and QT v numbers

give us some details

Hmmm.. I'm not having a problem with P2 and FCP 6/FCS 2 either.

Please tell us more of your system specifics as well as your upgrade procedures.

system specs: Promax turnkey system
  • 2x 3ghz dual core intel xeon
  • 4 gigs memory
  • 2.5 terabyte raid
  • Latest quicktime installed
  • Latest OSX update installed
Upgrade procedure was an upgrade over the existing Final Cut 5. We didnt remove previous version first, didnt think we could as we purchased the upgrade version of FCS 2.

We have tried trashing FC 6 preferences - hasnt helped.

Are we supposed to do a clean install of the OS before updating? Surely not. As far as repairing permissions... not sure what you mean by that. We trashed preferences AFTER we noticed the problem - not before the upgrade - just didnt occur to us that we should.

Would appreciate your help resolving this, David.

Are you supposed to?

In a production environment this is "best practices" for a great number of us.

It takes a while, but it is worth every hour spent.

I do this for a huge upgrade like FCS2. I don't have many issues with this procedure.

Once I get a full OS with updates installed, and FCS2 and Adobe CS3 installed, I immediately clone that drive, and then store it elsewhere.

That becomes a backup if issues arise.

We can't afford down time.

So, we take a little more time at the beginning to prevent it.

It's your call, but many, many editors I correspond with follow this practice.

Repair permissions is done in the Disk Utility

P2 Problems Here Too

P2 Problems Here Too

On Monday I imported P2 footage from Firestore drive that was shot on Friday.

I shot more footage during the day.

In the afternoon, P2 import now failes. No new software has been installed on my system.

I have tried importand every day since with no luck. I've depeted FCP preferences and rebooted.

I am using FCP6.

Luckilly, My G5 still has FCP5.1.4 -- I am doing my imports there until this bug is fixed.

I'm just chiming in gere because the P2 import worked fine for a few days and then mysteriously stopped. Sounds like the feature is just DOA for others.

Following David S. advice, we did a complete, 'clean' reinstall of OSX, updated to latest, then installed Final Cut 6.

P2 Clips still wont import. Promax is completely stumped, and I have Mac Pro HD editing system that wont import HD clips.

The definition of Frustration.

I have a 2.66 MacPro with 6 GBs of RAM.

I've run all the updaters.

Works perfectly.

When you say the HD clips won't import, what is occurring with what workflow?

I have clips recorded to a Firestore 100. After an "organize P2" on the drive, I copy the CONTENTS directory and LASTCLIP.txt file to my video array on the MacPro. I go to Log and Transfer and point FCP to the Contents directory. I see all the clips listed - and I can scrub through them. Adding them to the queue however, I get a red exclamation mark in the STATUS column. They wont ingest.

Not sure whats the problem. These same clips ingested into our Canopus Edius system, using the same process, just fine.

Do you mean you are using log and capture in FCP. I don't use a firestore so I'm not sure if the process is the same but you should go to import- Panasonic P2 in the drop down menu and direct it to the contents folder .

Have you tried Log and Transfer with the remove duplicate frames option checked off? I still have not had a problem.

Let me suggest one more fix. Try downloading and installing the OS X 10.4.9 combo updater (Intel). Don't know whether you were asked this question, but do you update your OS through software update or combo? I always recommend using the combo updater which effectively replaces everything since 10.4.0. This ensures that nothing was skipped or corrupted up incremental upgrades.

I honestly still suspect some issues with P2 and OS X and also wonder whether the FS-100 file structure might be a factor. I seem to recall some discussion in that vein and I will ping Matt and Focus to see if he knows anything.

Thats the old procedure, pre FCP 6.0 The new final cut upgrade has no P2 import menu item. Instead, one uses the Log and Transfer dialog.

I'm going to test this today with our FS-100 in FCP6 and our MacPro and report back.

Exactly what format to you have the cam and FS set to?

I didnt even know combo updates existed. In this reinstall, I simply used the 'software upgrade' to download and install updates till it said we were up to date. Is there a particular place to find these combo updates?
