Slow Mo - The NEW most overused effect by hacks

If I haven't already, I'll go on the record as stating that the HVX200 will make slow-motion the NEW "Most Over Used Effect" by hack filmmakers.

This is the same as the high speed shutter was two years ago, and the Coral 1 Filter was two years before that.

I guess I still would rather look at unmotivated and over used slow-mo than high-speed shutter. Be happy if you're not sitting on any festival selection committees this year!

Well, I have to admit, I'm one of those slow-motion guys you're talking about.
I also fell in love with the time-lapse interval feature as well. :)

I'm currently up in Northern Minnesota filming wildlife and the slow motion feature of the HVX is what I'm using the most.

Thnigs move so fast up here it's hard to really see what's going on.
Slow motion really helps me see the fluidity and grace of the wildlife I'm filming.

I filmed some wolves feeding on a carcass in both 24fps and 60fps in 24pN. The full speed footage is so quick and savage, you really miss a lot of the interaction and subtle details.

If I have time while I'm up here I'll try to upload some full motion footage of the wolf footage that's already posted here and you can see the difference. Maybe you'll like the full motion footage better but my vote is for the slow-motion stuff.:D

No, that clip was filmed with a Sony PD-150.
That's several years worth of footage all combined.
I compared that wolf footage with what I shot this week with the HVX and it doesn't hold a candle to it.
The PD150 is a great camera but the HVX image is so much better.

Hope you liked that Northern Exposures clip. The music and the visuals sum up fairly well how I feel when I'm out here creating footage.

So Northen Exposure.mov, is another sample footage from Hvx200! YEah! :)
It's beauty as Wolf footage! :)

What dolly system do you use N8ture? I really like two shots, one when you go to near to the bear (when it opens its mouth, at 1:50 seconds scene) the movement of the camera is sublime! And the shot of the fall after the bear! (at 1:53 scene)

Danilo,

I had to go back and edit my post. Originally I though as others did that you were tlaking about the wolf footage. But, once I saw that you were talking about the NE clip then that was done on a PD150.
But, it still looks pretty darn good.:)

I use a Cobra crane for my jib shots as it's light enough I can carry it around. People think I'm crazzy for lugging all that gear around. I've even had them call me stupid and that I was an idiot for lugging all that gear around. I figure if I don't mind, neiither should they. :)

Alll that slow motion was done in FCP post.

To be able to do it right i n the HVX200 is awesome. I took some normal speed footage and tried to slow it down in FCP. It doesn't look nearly as good.

I'm headed out here in a little bit as it looks like snow up here and I have the camera set at 720p 60p in 24pN mode. So, sorry Illya but I'm going to hack some more slo-mo footage. :D

Im confused, the PD 170 has 24PN?

Were all talking about different things. i have to find this Movie youre talking about.

Please only post HVX footage in the HVX footage forum. Going on record on what you think will be the next trend in digital filmmaking doesn't cut it. Moving this to the cafe. Thanks.

So what you are saying is that you are in love with this slowmotion option and are a huge hack and you will be abusing it? But you wanna deflect the attention away from yourself by calling everyone else who uses it a hack ?

Lighten up Francis

The ultimate HVX cliché:

HD 24p bullet time knockoff with a homebuilt fig-rig, in front of a greenscreen with timelapsed super-shallow-DoF footage. That ends in a Star Wipe.

Nice avatar Kovarova!

If you thought it was already overused, just wait. Because Panasonic was cool enought to offer such a feature, doesn't mean it has to be used.

About 75% of what a member of a film festival selection committee sees is what the filmmaker describes as a 'coming of age story'. Now when there's that poignant conversation about how the main character isn't crazy and is just misunderstood, it can all be in brilliant slow-motion!

Actually, the most overused "effect" by hack filmmakers is the notion that inserting a gun = instant drama. That's true on any camera.

I am proud to count myself in the slo-mo hack user camp. My clients love it and I look forward to utilizing the VariCam features on the HVX200 to better achieve it.

A Gainfully Employed Hack,
