Final Cut ProSumer?

I got no skin in this game so I don't care, but I know a TON of folks use this software. This story looks like it could be either disturbing, or good news, depending on how you feel about it. But if you've got a strong opinion, you might want to let Apple know.

Of course, it's not technically "news" as it's published on AppleInsider, so there may or may not be actual truth here...

Seriously hope this isnt true.

Because Apple now primarily sells the Express version, the company wants to rethink Final Cut Studio and scale its overall development to better fit the majority of its customers.

And if that is true, they should realise its because the low end aspires to be the higher end. If theres no higher end then the low end has no inspiration.

If they do this then my relationship with apple is also severely on the rocks.

I just installed CS5.

Meh?

I think Steve Jobs said in an email something about Final Cut Pro still being a big deal for Apple, and what about the Alexa, I doubt they'd jump into ProRes if there was indication FCP was going backwards. But what do I know. I have FCP 7 and am quite happy with it, so at worst I don't upgrade, or jump ship to Avid if Final Cut disappoints.

I'll believe it when I see it- Apple Insider has claimed for years that a special Final Cut Extreme complete with additional hardware was 'coming next NAB.' And there's even less meat on the bones in this report. As with all things Apple nothing's real until Steve says so...

I don't really know what to make of this story. But if it turns out their goal is to make it more consumer friendly, then I don't like it. That just seems to mean more fluff and prepackaged stuff that professionals won't use in their work anyway.

Honestly, FCP is not a very difficult program to use. I'd probably look into Avid or back to Premiere if they start dumbing it down. It's really the only thing keeping me on the mac platform as it is.

Interesting... I'm not sure I'm worried about this yet, but have been disappointed with FCP progress over the last few years. However, I still hope that a lot of the effort on FCP involves revamping for the new multiprocessing and coprocessor-exploiting technologies. There's been talk for MANY versions of FCP about the need for a major interface revamp - not just for Color, which is way out there, but also for the basics of FCP.

Dunno. Certainly the iMovie changes were problematic to say the least, and I can't say I'm glad to see the person responsible for that getting his mitts on FCP... but I hold onto hope that something beneficial is in the works... fool's hope...? We'll see. I haven't even moved to FCS3 yet, since it was so underwhelming; I guess the next version will be the FCP decider for me...

Am I the only one that read this as no more Express, but a Studio package that is separate from the cluster/server options and even more streamlined between apps for a smaller learning curve and intuitive UI design changes?

For some reason I was thinking no Express and a $500 FCP Studio if anything. FCE is actually a very good program and you can actually cut features with it. The only thing missing is "Apple Color". I mean I never use Sound Track, I use Garage Band (which has midi). The only thing problematic is it doesn't convert to Pro Res but AIC which many people don't seem to have a problem with to my knowledge.

I cut a lot, including a feature, on FCP 3, on a G4 tower, for almost 7 years and just upgraded to FCS 3 on an 8 core Mac Pro. I have never been a "Gotta have the newest bells and whistles" kinda guy and think that, even if the story is true, I will be fine for a while.

FCE also has no 23.976 support, so those of us who work in 24p cannot get by on FCE.

And it has no OMF export or similar, so true audio post is out of the question. Sound mixing within FCP/FCE can be done, but it's just not as capable as bringing the audio into a true DAW.

Hopefully we won't see a dumbed down FCP...I can't imagine that happening. I have no doubt that the prosumer market is ever-growing and a huge force in the marketplace but I really can't see apple completely cater to the prosumer line through the "pro" line and completely abandoning high end users. Exodus to AVID or Premiere Pro?

The more i use Color, Soundtrack Pro, and Motion the fewer features i need in final cut. Having said that, i think hiring different engineers and working on the interface is a long way from dumbing it down. Plus they do have a way of simplifying and improving at the same time.

This report feels totally uncredible to me. Reads like totally unfounded speculation by a blog trying to get some attention. And the conclusions they're drawing don't even follow from the "facts" they are reporting. A change in interface doesn't mean lowering standards. Although I like the Color interface, I know a number of editors who would like to see the interface totally overhauled to eliminate the vestiges of the program's Linux underpinnings.

I agree with Hodges. I went to an Apple workshop a couple years ago, when they rolled out FCS 2 with Color, etc. and all they could brag about was how they had captured so much of the Pro market share to that point.

Good point.

I think when a lot of people hear "make more consumer friendly" or something along those lines they first think of "dumbing things down" and adding more things like cheesy presets and stuff like Livetype.

But if it's more the case of overhauling the interface and "ease of use" functionality wise while maintaining the "pro" aspect side of things, then I'm all for it.

Truth is no one really knows anything. if they did and spoke about they'd be violating their NDA. That's what's great and not so great about Apple.

But that also was before their shift towards the consumer market. Actually if they keep the "PRO" department at all, than maybe more out of prestige than economically reasons. (Just my 2c of course... :cheesy:)
But as others have said: even the current MacPro line, will hold up pretty well for quite a while...
