External monitor ideas

Yes, was going to add, seems my area is lacking gadgets like these in stores, will search around, but those of you (ie: US) if there are any other models/makes with an input that would cater for our desire for monitor then please, post details and 'witness statements' here :)

wow the cowon a3 looks awesome!!!! 800x480 resolution, 7 hours of battery life in video mode. but it's an inbuilt non-replaceable battery.

If you goto their corporate site, and scroll down it say S-VIDEO AND COMPONENT VIDEO IN so I'm assuming you can view/record video from the component.
http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/cowon/a3/

If you read through the description carefully, it says "High Quality TV IN; S-Video, Composite" not component. I also read through the user guide and it has a number of illustrations showing various cable connections which confirmed it's either S-video in or composite A/V in.

Believe me, I wish it said otherwise but I'm still interested to see if the S-video in provides a good enough image to be useful for our external monitoring applications. If not, it still looks like a great device to have for a number of other uses.

If someone is going to BH Video or somewhere else that carries this unit, please test it out and let us know.

thanks...

Yeah, unfortunately Leo is right. I'd still like someone to test it out.
How do you think this would work with a DVX for a 35mm adapter?

Dang, I just found out some places here in Barcelona where they sell it and it costs around 450€!

Guys. I thought you were looking for a good, cheap, small production monitor. This is a toy! How will you mount that onto the hvx?

disjecta, looks nice, but if it has the same connection inputs as the A3, I personally don't have or see the need for "touch-screen".

Someone test these out already.:)

read through the manual. no component HD in. only composite and s-video. the question is, is it 16x9 switchable?

maybe not alls hopes are lost.
one good news is that it can use s-video as high quality input.
........some info about s-video vs component and about the monitor resolution.
also the marshall HD monitor is not really HD becouse it has a resolution of 800x480 as the cowon A3.
sure....the signal that come from the component port of an HD camera like hvx200 is capable of high quality HD signal.
but this have sense with a real HD monitor but with a non HD monitor like marshall -ikan or others 800x480 monitors the HD signal of the camera is downscaled from the video card of the monitor.
also in the Standard Definition world component signal is the better signal with more horizontal resolution:

Composite is 200-220 lines of horizontal resolution
S-Video is 400-420 lines of horizontal resolution
Component is 500-525 lines of horizontal resolution

but the horizontal resolution of the monitor is 480.
sooooo!!!component is better but s-video is also very nice.
and also the HD signal is downscaled by the hardware of the camera and the Marshall can't down convert the Component HD better than the HVX200 can down convert to S-video.

about the aspect size you can select in the menu of cowon A3 16:9 OR 4:3 and there is also a function to zoom pan and scan.

to be tested
