Final Cut Hell - Not Rendered. Now What????

Why God, WHY, did I switch to FCP? So, I signed up for Lynda.com. I've watched gobs of tutorials but doing the simplest task in Final Cut is impossible. Just when I think I can do something, some other annoying problem pops up.

I went through the tedious process of watching my footage and creating subclips of sections I wanted to use. I am working with files from an HMC150 - which work beautifully on a PC. Just drag and drop. I first put in an audio clip that wouldn't initially play. FCP just played the video and added a bunch of loud, screaming beeps. Seriously, for all the trouble it took the programmer to create those beeps, couldn't he/she/they just let the actual audio play? Anyway, I had to fumble around with that for a couple of hours to change it to an aiff file. Yay. Done - somehow.

So, now I want to drop in my first subclip. Okay. FCP agrees to let me put it in the timeline but when I try to watch it, a blue screen appears that says unrendered. Really? I have to do some rendering thing now? What the heck? (I want to use a different word here)

So, NOW I google this problem and read and watch more videos and find a potential answer. Some guys says to click on RT and change it to unlimited. Well, I don't have that option. Can anyone help me with this?

Sorry for the snarky post. Peppering my post with frustration is better than chucking my new Mac across the room.

Thank you for any help!

BTW, I'm using FCP 7.

Why did you have to convert your audio to Aiff? I don't follow.

Also, click in the timeline (to make it active), then press "Option + R" to render your footage ... AND audio (so it won't beep).

Final Cut Pro's log and transfer function transcodes AF100 clips from mts format to pro res for editing.

There's no secret about that process, and the conversion is fairly fast, and results in a transcode to an editing codec.

When I had a HMC150, I transcoded to pro res LT, and never experienced any issues in about a year and a half.

It sounds as if you haven't transcoded. Help us out on how you using log and transfer and whether your SDHC card transfers occurred.

Thanks so much for the help. I had some mts files that would not log and transfer for some reason, so I had to use a co-worker's PC to convert the files. (All the Mac converters cost money and it's takes a while to get purchases processed at work, so I just used a PC to get a free converter) The converter would not render files as mov, so I had to render them as mpegs and imported them to FCP. I am following along with the tutorials and the viewer played the files and allowed me to make subclips but when I put the subclips in the timeline, the video played but the audio beeped. SO, I separated the audio from the video, exported it to Soundtrack Pro and saved it as aiff file. I then imported it back into final cut and was just going to match up the audio with the video. That totally ruins all the work I did to create subclips but, at least, it works.

The subclips I am now having trouble with - the ones that say "not rendered" - I created were from files that I logged and transferred directly off my sd card. I watched the raw footage in the viewer, marked in and out points and then created a "subclip". But now, when I put the subclips in the timeline it says not rendered. I'm sure there are better ways to do this...Thanks again!

So, I just followed the tutorial. Put the sd card in the card reader on my laptop, hit log and transfer and the mts clips showed up. I dragged them into the que and labeled them and I think I hit automatic transfer. They appeared in the browser window. I then viewed them in the viewer, marked in and out points and created subclips. When I dropped one of these subclips into the timeline, the audio plays but the picture says "not renedered". Thanks so much for your help!

Sounds to me that your timeline settings aren't quite right. When you bring a clip onto the timeline, it should pop up a little box that says "would you like FCP to change the sequence settings to match the selected media".... or something like that. Click Yes. If your audio beeps, highlight the selected audio track and press apple+R to render it. Should be good to go without switching programs or platforms. Beeping audio is not a bad thing, it just needs to be rendered. If you render the audio and the playback is silent, then you have a format issue, beeps are good.

Thank you so much!! Much less work. Whew. I feel better!

You're welcome.

By the by, I'm starting on Premiere CS5.5 and running into issues too. But the issues are...like there here...unfamiliarity with how the program works. I had a friend show me a few things and PRESTO! It worked. Takes a while when switching NLE's to get used to the new one.

You're right. I'm doing much better today. It was so easy to make the transition from editing audio in Vegas to video, I got a little spoiled. I forgot how hard it was to learn everything when I first started editing anything. I'm starting see some cool things in FCP and I'm excited to learn it!
