Filippo Chiesa Video

Very nice, Mr. Bloom. Always appreciate your compositions.

Most of your shots are by your choice, mostly static. What are your thoughts on how the AF100 performs regarding just skew/jello which would be more evident on handheld action shots? Is it better than the DSLRs you've used like the 7D and GH1?

I make my living with the images I produce...and after watching the quality achieved by Philip Bloom and Filippo Chiesa I have NO DOUBT that this camera was the right choice for this price point right now.

I am reluctant to even chime in here after the absolute roasting and nastiness directed at me on the previous thread (and some of those users are on this thread too) but I re-graded the footage on the plane home and it looks much better. I am hoping for a more dignified series of replies this time.

Oh and please do the footage justice by downloading it and play it on a big TV. Thanks.

Wow, just amazing stuff here, Philip. Thanks for sharing. I watched it several times just in the Vimeo window and it's superb. I can only imagine the tears welling up in my eyes if I were to watch it on a big TV. It definitely seems the AF100 has what it takes for narrative work from your demonstration here.

Before I place an order for the AF100, the only thing that's bouncing around in the back of my head are the rumors that Digic V will be video centered for the 5DIII which could address the codec issues on the 5D. Even so, the AF100 has many things going for it in form factor that the 5DIII obviously won't have. I just wish Canon would show their hand soon. Thanks.

Now it looks superb. Absolutely well done and beautiful. The new grade gives justice to the footage, to the cam and to Mr Bloom. But I think it gives also justice to those who were disappointed with the first version and, although in an inappropriate way, told their opinion. A little bit it is due to those critics, if now Mr Bloom did this masterpiece. I think we can really trust this camera. Thank you Mr Bloom and excuse me.

Downloaded Philip's regrade and watched via PS3 on a calibrated 60" Sony SXRD - I pre-ordered the AF100 in Sept. and watching Philip's 2nd Hirano San makes me very happy about my decision to pre-order. Really can't wait. Thank you, Philip, and Filippo, and Barry. Beautiful stuff.

haven't read to the end of the thread yet, I don't know if Filippo has chimed in or not, but ... I love that guy, he's a first-class professional who works with major brands and major clients, and a very nice person, and exactly the kind of person I'd want to work with whenever possible. I know he was using a Nikon 12-24 and liked it very, very much. I don't know whatever other lenses he was using. I have told him how much we appreciate his participation, so I hope we will see his responses.

Hi there Barry,

thanks for your kind words and for your friendship.
I very much appreciate your comments about the AG-AF100 and your outstanding professionality.

Cheers,

Filippo

Hey Philip, my apologies, poor choice of words, wasn't my intent to slag your work at all, just the opposite. I thought the footage was great too, as well as the cam. I'm buying one as well. My point was only that Panasonic should have given you all more time & resources, for their own sake.

I am a former HVX user/ owner and a professional DP who has used almost every camera out there. Yes, I don't know how to get the very best out of this new camera, nobody does yet as it isn't any finished yet. But I am as proud and happy with my footage, especially after the re-grade, as anything I have shot out there. Does that mean I have no idea how to make the camera sing? I totally disagree. I think what I produced looks pretty damn good hence I am ordereing one. I am exceedingly happy with this camera.

Love this new grade Philip !
Thanks for going the extra extra mile.

He answered that in the comments to the film on his blog. Said the rolling shutter, while still present, was substantially reduced as compared to the DSLRs. I agree.

Proof of the faster CMOS read is in the car shot where the buildings and sign posts are going quickly by. The vertical lines are not skewed or chopped.

Well, skew does still exist. He said he didn't use some shots because even though the skew was less than a DSLR would have done, it was still more than he liked. So, like with all CMOS sensors, skew still does exist. However, it's greatly reduced as compared to a DSLR, and is instead on par with the best video cameras out there.

EDIT: found the quote, it's not in the comments but in the body of the article. This is what he had to say:
Rolling shutter issues as expected were still present but way less pronounced that DSLRs. I did shoot out the side of the bus whilst moving and there was still some skew, enough for me not to use it but a lot better than what I have become used to.
