Filippo Chiesa Video

>Chromatic abberation happens in highly contrasted areas,

CA is a property of the lens. In the GH1 Panasonic corrects CA in camera but of course only with known m4/3 lenses.

Very nice video.

Yes, I understand that. Was just pointing out it had nothing to do with the tilt shift effect.

I know nothing about Nikon lenses. The two lenses he used would take different adaptors, right? ...

Nikon 14-24mm 1:2.8G ED AF-S

Nikon 50mm 1:1.2 AI-S

Now please if your a 5DMKII user do not tell me you think this has excessive CA - 5DMKII is horrible for CA, yes I shoot with one every week.

I am not sure if these pre-launch videos do justice to the camera. Having them done by a variety of people with different approaches is great for the consumers and the info needed to justify the purchase. Generally, pretty images and thanks god, no another skate park video amongst them, but what I have noticed everywhere is the poor dynamic range with clipped highlights even in shots done in an overcast environment.

I know, have heard the mantra that it is only a pre-production model but this camera is going to compete against the new Sony, possibly Scarlet... that all allege a higher dynamic range of 13-14 stops and better s/n ratio. Unfortunately, it sits comfortably at the bottom of the pack with the only excuse being "what do you want for this kind of money". Great features for the price point, but I cannot see it in higher end productions where a small increase in budget cannot justify the quality hit.
For the time being my wallet feels safe, before the onslaught of offers to be expected in 2011.

I feel the same way. Nice pics for sure but for a little more money you may get a flawless image. Perhaps once the option to tweak are in place it may appear a little better in the dynamic range stuff. I wait patiently but 2011 is going to be one hang of a year.

This is very nice indeed by the way....I wonder what was different. Looks much better

Scarlet: 2-3 times more expensive.
Sony: 3-4 times more expensive.
This does not equate to "a little more money"

Flawless? No such thing.
Images from these cameras? Haven't seen any. Have you?
2011 for the Scarlet??? Predispose yourself for a long wait.

this one looks better to me also than bloom's. Not in composition wise, I mean video wise, the dynamic range seems better etc. But this codec looks really poor.

- Scarlet - hmmm... I said "possible"... To be honest I don't see it really coming and be competitive, despite what one reads at Reduser, where I already saw the term" us, the Scarlet users" ?!?!???? But Sony will be there as a nagging presence, and the fear of the other monster - Canon who reluctantly will enter the market. And look at what happened on the vDSLR scene after coming in late in the third place after Nikon, Panasonic. I have a GH1, an EOS1d4 and an EOS 550D and it is hard to convince a client that the Panasonic delivers better pictures than the so called market leader.

- I agree that 3-4 times more expensive, it is not a little more money but the cost of the camera package in a production is a single digit percentage. I'd rather use the right camera for the right job. Hiring the right tool for the job is not a dirty deed and lately it comes really cheap. I was offered for long term hire RED packages almost for free, as long as you get the owner to be part of the technical camera crew. It also depends on what you do and the end use of the camera. If it serves well the segment of the market one is lodged in, I cannot see any problems as long as the client is happy.

- And, yes for the price point is good value: for an owner/operator, it is not a bad thing to have. It can pay for itself in one or two gigs only.

Despite of any shortcomings I find, I don't mind to air them in a public forum as long as you are not among fanboys. It only can make the AF200 and its future competitors really sweet cameras.

Looks nice to me. I havent watched it on a proper monitor but i'm sure it will look very good. Its a pity PB thread had to be closed though i see it as necessary. poor display.

Shout outs to all the testers that helped make us see whats up with this camera...and people like PB, Vince Laforet, Shane Hurlbut, Matt Workman (especially for me), Rich Lee and countless other dslr shooters making beautiful images instead of harping on flaws. I for one as a 7d owner am inspired to also reach that level. I doubt i'll be able to afford this camera with all the lights i want to buy in the coming year but its good to know i can achieve stunning results with what i got. Doesnt matter what camera. Up ur skills!

I know, I know, I know Steve. I wonder what Canon is up to - been awful quiet. Scarlet fixed is similiarly priced isn't it for the DSLR style rig? It's a balancing act at the moment between cost and features. This cam can produce some really nice pictures for sure after seeing this vid. I will make my mind up closer to NAB. Then things will be clearer but 2011 is an incredible year to be capturing moving pictures. Flawless = Alexa but I cannot afford that LOL.

Show me a camera that has the dynamic range the manufacturer claims and I'll show you the film stock inside of it.

Agreed. Wow.

I hope FC will chime in here with some information on lenses and camera settings. Really, really nice stuff.
haven't read to the end of the thread yet, I don't know if Filippo has chimed in or not, but ... I love that guy, he's a first-class professional who works with major brands and major clients, and a very nice person, and exactly the kind of person I'd want to work with whenever possible. I know he was using a Nikon 12-24 and liked it very, very much. I don't know whatever other lenses he was using. I have told him how much we appreciate his participation, so I hope we will see his responses.

I assure you, they don't. We had one day! Most of the guys didn't really know how to run the camera. One of them, Emmanuel, had never even picked one up yet. But he fell in love with it on that first day, to the point where he made a little video of his love affair with the AF100.

For my part, I intend to advise Panasonic to not do this again -- well, I mean, not post footage. Bringing in pros to review, use, and comment is a necessary part of the development process. But no, nobody should be posting footage from a firsthand "here, go shoot today" test, because of how the footage is received.

They should instead farm the cameras out to us for a good two weeks, let us experiment to death, dial in our own magic recipes and secret sauce, and then set up our preferred styles of shooting. Like I said, the wander-around-shooting-a-montage thing is not my cup of tea. I know Philip excels at it, I don't know how the others feel about it. I want a set, actors, and lights, and a production monitor. We had none of that, so obviously I couldn't deliver my best -- and I don't know that we're seeing any of these shooters at their best, and I know they didn't have opportunities to optimize the camera. So I think releasing this footage is counterproductive as it just results in a lot of folks complaining, and that serves no valid purpose.

And next time, when they've developed some new wunderkam AF500 or something, and everyone's "demanding" to see footage -- I'm gonna point folks back to these threads.
