Fiction Fest - Round 2: The Finalists

Larry Rutledge

Fest Master
First, a big thank you to everyone who took the time to make and enter a film. Regardless of the outcome, it is definitely a huge achievement just to get that far. Many start the journey, but few complete it. So hats off to those of you who completed and entered.

We've enjoyed the films and appreciate the effort that was put into creating them.

And now, without further ado, here are your top 6 finalists (in alphabetical order):

  • Face of Fear - Mr Blue
  • No Horizon - Matt Harris
  • On Our Terms - Matthew B
  • Sente Sente - AJ Brooks
  • The Rook Moves - Shawn Philip Nelson
  • WILL - lyonfilms

Congratulations to everyone who entered... and best of luck to the finalists... Remember, you are rating each film individually. This is a star system.. it is not a ranking system. You can have 3 films a 7, two as a 6, four as an 8... whatever... just think of it like putting stars on a video at youtube.

You can view and rate the films you haven't yet rated that are on the finalists list using the same url as before....

Rating for round 2 will continue until March 24th.

Wow, thank you to everyone who gave high marks to our film. This is a tough group to be up against. Good job on everyones part, and good luck to the finalists.

....which, if anyone is interested, is as follows:

#1 Sente Sente
favorite bit of dialogue: N/A (& *N/N*)

#2 On Our Terms
favorite bit of dialogue: "...It wasn't the height I was scared of. Well...when we stopped at the top, I was petrified. We just set there rocking. I tried all day to find the right time...and I knew this was my last chance..."

#3 Face of Fear
favorite bit of dialogue: [possible-spoiler] "I don't want to hear this. Just leave. Close the door." [/possible-spoiler]

PS- As an aficionado of the Twilight Zone...Face of Fear, albeit an homage to the tone and feel of the show, is not derived from ANY episode.

Congratulations to all the entries. All did a great job just to get em done.

Big congrats to the finalists.

If you are referring to my comment you missed that I also mentioned the show "Are You Afraid of the Dark". In it a young woman is trapped in a painting. I also said I believed it to be more reminiscent of that show. There's also a movie called Witches I believe.

In the end it really reminded me of Tim Joy's entry from a few fests back where you hear the outside voices and/or see shadows and the reveal is that they are in a dollhouse.

Doesn't matter, because they made it their own and put a unique spin on it.
I wasn't claiming they were ripping anyone off, just that I had seen that' trapped in an object' idea before.
But really, what hasn't been done already? :)

We never took it that way. There have been a lot of comparisons to our film, and the writer makes no contentions that his idea has been influenced by other things. The last film he saw that inspired him just before he wrote it was.

Personally, after I first read the script I told him that it reminded me of the twilight zone where the toys were trapped in the trash can and they tried to climb out.

But really, what hasn't been done already? :)
Exactly, I always say there is nothing new under the sun.

Thanks! Congrats to the other finalists - I like to see that three Portland, Oregon filmmakers are in the top 6. Portland...or Portlandia as some of you know us. Woot!
