Fiction Fest 2011 - Submission Status

BTS requirement was a great idea. It's a fun way to meet the filmmakers and see their craft.

I vote the requirement be taken a step further -- director's/cast/crew commentary, interactive "dvd menu" type games, voice dubs for at least three foreign languages... :)

i have enjoyed watching the bts videos. What did you guys think about that requirement this time around? On set bts vid...

I actually was suprised at the effort of some entries. Really good job by everyone. I think we keep this.

I think that's all the films now. Make sure you guys say thanks to Noel and Zak for chipping in and picking up the slack :)

later,
Jason

I think something you all are forgetting is the economy. A couple of years ago when things were going well here in the States, you saw a lot more entries because people still had good paying day jobs. They could afford tossing out $1k just for catering. Now, our present economy, tossing out money to cater, permits or costumes isn't quite feasible for some.

I think the economy has had a lot to do with the lack of large numbers in this fest. As things go on the upswing I think you will see a return of larger numbers.

Good luck to everyone. Look forward to watching your stuff later tonight. I have to get busy and write articles today.

I can understand that, however I'm so used to using no budget on everything I shoot that I did it here, too.

Educated Mouse Trap: $40 total
Jenny: $0 total

And a huge thank you to all the mods making this possible!

Ditto.

You can make movies on the cheap if you really want to make one. It's really about the experience and fun of creating something.

Thanks to everyone behind the scenes on this Fest. Special shout out to Noel for being quite helpful over the course of it.

Thanks, guys.

I agree movies can be produced on a very small budget now with all of the shortcuts us filmmakers have learned throughout the years. None the less, it still amazes me to hear some people pulling it off on $0. Even a $0 budget costs money - even for just day to day things like gas and food. No matter how 'low budget' your film is, you are still spending on bare necessity things at the very least and not to mention your time (time is money!). Regardless of what the case may be, it doesn't matter on your dollar, it matters what you could make with that dollar and by the look of some of the BTS videos alone, a lot of you know how to stretch that dollar to its maximum US currency :p

BTS was definitely great to watch. I sat back last night with my gf watching them all as i pointed things out like a little school boy, "LOOK BABY! ANOTHER RED!! :D ". All I got to say is Talent Talent Talent and am super excited to see the films that go with each of the BTS videos.

Discounting the things I already had lying around (camera, lights, 1oz of Petrol, my car, CocaCola, snacks, bacon), it's cost $0 to make. But if you really want to total it, more along the lines of $4000 dollars. Haha.

I have pushed the films to the mirrors, I'm building the zip archives now and trying to resolve a bug in the viewer page. So we are close .. most likely in a couple hours.

The only real hang up is that I have to also do my regular day job at the same time, so it slows my progress :)

We appreciate the hard work and attention. I know how annoying it can be to launch a SetUp like this. Even having done it many times, it never seems to go smoothly.

On the topic of budgets:

Some people spend thousands, some spend next to nothing.

As for time is money, I have a day job and do these short films during my spare time with existing equipment. Costs me next to nothing.

Most of my time is spent editing into the wee hours when I should be in bed asleep. :)

On the flip side, some peope rent RED cameras /w DOP, have substantially large crews and even shoot on professional sets. Some of which may not cost them much due to professional connections.

It really varies.

I think I spent about $350 on mine. Most of that was food (both on the day and on pre-production days for meetings) and in paying people's parking since we were downtown. Plus I still owe PSU $34 in parking fees.
