FD to EOS

It has optics. That means degraded quality, no infinity focus and refraction. Which isn't worth it, not with FD.

Hi,

I have access to some canon FD lenses 100 f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 24mm f2.8 and I am debating on if it would be worth it to get an adapter. :)

Mike, I think you can answer that FD question for yourself, forget it. You have much better lenses already on the camera. 11-16 17-40 Leica etc.

Ok, you are right people!

With those lenses just sitting there it seemed like a good idea for a minute!

I wish there was a camera I could use them on without optical adapter. I think scarlet will have the option, but I wonder if you have to choose FD as your mount? If you could get a scarlet with s35 sensor that you could use EF, Leica, FD and nikon with some kind of adapter ring system that would be great!

Oh well, thanks for talking some sense into me! I could sell my EF 50 1.8ii that I use for stills and almost pay the difference to get the new (rumored) 50 1.4 when it comes out (with the money I would spend on an FD adapter).

I've got that 21 f/4 Leica for stills. Fabulous lens, ruler-straight drawing, and a long focus throw.
Only problem (And it could be a deal-breaker) is the odd shaped 4 leaf iris.

you would have to take apart fd mount from lens and make a hole in eos cap and glue it together with lens so it acts like eos mount(or buy eos ring and then glue it with fd lens ),or saw off mount from other lens and glue it to fd lens.
It is possible but not that easy.Sometimes you would need a saw to cut off part of FD lens to get proper focal flange.
TAke apart FD mount and keep lens without mount in front of the camera to see if you can get infinity in focus ,if you can then try to glue some mount with this lens.

.

It's still a good idea to try mounting them as macro lenses. After all we do use extension tubes for lenses that cause them not to focus to infinity. At least you get to shoot them "raw".

Not a good idea.

They are still nice lenses and will find an HD camera to mount them on with all the new gear being released sooner or later then the value will go back up. If you hack them up they will be worthless.

I didn't mean that I wouldn't love to have some Leica wide angle primes (now you have me waffleing).. It is just hard to justify the price compared to modern lenses when you don't need the long focus throw. Sounds like a great lens! How do you get the best focus results with stills? Live view? I have a chipped adapter and it seems pretty accurate but if I am shooting portraits with the 50 at f2 it misses sometimes.

I'm a bit lazy!
I tend to use the distance marks and often use the hyperfocal method to maximise (Shock-horror!) the DoF. The MkI 5D doesn't have live-view.
With a 21 on FF the Dof can be enormous. Mine cost £350 or so from Ffordes in Inverness, not sure what the US equivilant would cost.
Don't use a 21 for portraits unless you have an understanding modal and are going for the surreal look!
Cheers,
Dave

I dont see anything wrong with hacking one lens for yourself, its a choice between not using the lens at all or trying to replace the mount and make it work,or just sell it if you dont like to DIY.

Yeah it will work, but maybe better to sell it and get something else. Lots of cheap Nikon lenses around.

The FD lenses I have access to were my father in law's so I wouldn't want to modify them due to sentimental reasons. Thanks anyway!

Get a Photodiox standard adapter and shoot some macro tests. Maybe only $25 bucks. Don't let those nice lenses sit around doing nothing. Put em back on the job.

There is a way to make FD lens work on EOS without quality loss, just buy yourself adapter which doesnt reach infinity and then add in front of your lens Plano-concave lens (like the ones in wide angle adapters). Then you will get more field of view and lens will be a bit wider + infinity focus. This will also make your DOF a bit deeper.
Also some lenses need to be on even bigger distance from sensor to reach infinity.
Im doing this with some m42 lenses , i moving them away from sensor a bit and then adding plano-concave lens to make them a bit wider because i dont quite like this 1.6 crop ,so i can have 1.4 or less, depens how far i put lenses from each other and from sensor.

Yeah,it works but bokeh becomes a little bit hazy if you do that and depth of field is deeper.
But its the best way IMO withouy quality loss.I wondering why it wasnt discussed anywhere when i read about FD to EOS adapters, its quite easy to figure out,i guess not many people like to DIY and they choose to sell their FD lenses.
