F23: Just Got A New Camera - Sony F23

Quad link is necessary for 60P 444 - same as with the F35 (even though the sensor only does 50P).

It's a data rate issue

The Panasonic 4k varicam will come in a native 2/3 mount. I doubt we will see many films or dramatic TV on this particular camera. But I also bet they make far more 2/3 models if it catches on as the live production camera, which it will if sony doesn't answer with a 2/3 native 4k camera.

Unless Panny is coming out with a new VariCam camera head, the 2/3" version is HD(VariCam HS). The 4K variant is S35(VariCam 35).

Happy to say I've joined the F23 club with some digiprimes as well :-)

The 3.9mm is such a fun lens to play with. Just wow...a tad tighter than the Arri Ultra 8R!

Also, the body didn't come with the stickers usually found on the F23. No serial numberbadge or ND/CC wheel sticker either. However when I loaded with CVP Editor, serial number pops up as 116 !

I've made a custom s-log curve that caps out at 100 IRE rather than 104 IRE, no need to deal with the video/data levels anymore. Works great for me.

Found the digi's from a production house in New Zealand. Got both zoom lenses, the 3.9mm, and the 7mm. Sharpmax and 1.4 extender as well.

Here is the link for the s-log capping out at 100 IRE

Load with CVP editor. Highly recommend anyone with a F35/23 to play with the program. You can make the panalog or cineon curve if you'd wish. I did my best to replicate them if anyone is interested.

I've got to say, I'm more in love with the F23 sensor than the F35's. The combination with Digiprimes is just wow.

Now i'm wishing for 444 60p quadlink, hopefully that will work better since dual link is a bit plagued right now. I wonder how easy or hard it would be for Convergent Designer engineers to work that one!

You need 2 x IF boxes, and also 2 x Aja LUT box to combine dual link into 3G signal for the 7Q. Then of course you need the 7Q to support 60P 4444. I don't think a 7Q will be able to handle 4 x single link signals as inputs.

What problems are you having on the dual link? 60P specifically? I've actually shot a lot of my F23 at 60P, I set the project rate in the 7Q to 23.98 so it playback as slow-motion footage. I also have found resetting the A connection of the 7Q fixes interlacing issues.

Jo, do you have some sample footage with this combo?

We support HD RGB 4:4:4 in 12-bit & 10-bit up to 60p. DPX and Apple ProRes 4444(XQ) & 4444. I don't recall if we can do Quad-Link to do it, as the F23/F35 are the only cameras to ever use this delivery format and even then it was in an oddball Sony PSF structure.

thats a good point about the psf mitch, just because the LUT box works with the dual-link doesn't mean it would know how to split quad link into 2 parts properly. Who knows what will work without parts/experimenting

Does the codex do 12 bit 60p (50P F35)? This might be the only recorder to properly handle 12-bit quad link 60P.

I don't think anyone has ever hooked up the 4 outputs of 2 interface boxes to see if it actually works, or what it even looks like...are there quad link monitors?

Please post a frame with the 3.9mm very curious what that super wide angle looks like.

I'll have some footage to show in a few days or so.

From the latest firmware that allows for 12bit prores, we also lost the function of dual link 50/60p, because of the new dual monitor mode.
The lut box seems to be the only way to bypass this for now. Not sure if CD is able to fix this issue for us?

We have either choose between Pro Res 444 or the ability to do 50/60p. Unless CD makes a special firmware for us F23/35 users that disables the dual monitor mode?

Who knows...looking forward to the new January firmware soon.

Now that I have two interface boxes, the first thing I did was try quadlink into the 7q, but obviously that didn't work.
I know Viddovation also had two boxes and experimented heavily. Pretty sure the codex does record 50/60p 444. That machine is so solid.

Here are a couple quickly graded grabs of my buddies skating. Used 1.8 ND & 6300k filters

I'm a bit confused by some of this firmware talk and so forth, and whether people are talking about the monitor ports or the dock ports. So a few things.

1. I was under the impression the O7Q(+) does effectively have quad inputs in, for the Apollo option. That said, I don't know whether they have firmware that supports reading quad link as RGB 60p. Perhaps Mitch can clarify.

2. The IF box only has dual link. However, each dock on the F23/F35 actually has 6x SDI - 4x output, and 2x input. The camera has two distinct dock operation modes: IF & VTR. IF mode only activates a 2x Dual link SDI out, with the other 4 links sitting idle. VTR mode can activate up to all six - quad out, dual return. This relates to the SRW-1 HDCAM-SR recorder being able to record 60p RGB 444, but only doing playback at 30p.

My time has been diverted to a project that has far more mass markert appeal - a unfied remote contol system for Sony cameras like FS7/FS5/F5/F55 and A7S/A7R/A7Sii/etc that also runs Kessler motors, triggers lights, and more. Here's a sample:
https://vimeo.com/151716054

However, if I ever get back to it I do have code that talks directly to the F23/F35 dock and emulates a VTR. Using this, and a salvaged dock connector from the SRW-1, building a dock that outputs quad link (or builds the lut boxes in for reducing) would be theoretically possible. Part of why I stopped before was I got to the parts fabrication stage and wasn't prepared. I'm considering getting a 3d printer soon, which would make that part of prototyping far easier.

Is there any problem with LUTbox and BM video assist combination
for 10bit1080p50 ..on F35 ???

currently in this setup..

comfirmed all four inputs works ONLY with F35, and sadly...not the F23

I have the Codex M with my F35 and I believe it will only do 12:bit 4:4:4 up to 30P but I have never tried so I will give it a go tomorrow and see if it can do 12 bit 4:4:4 at 50P.

OK, the latest firmware 2016.01 has fixed the dual link 50p issue! Perfect!

Now we can switch between 12 bit 444 & 50p 422 with ease.

CD, Mitch, Dan, you guys are superb. Thank you for the continued support.

It appears the F23 never received the firmware upgrade that allows for quad-link 60p output.

However, the F35 did. With the above pictured setup, I am able to receive all 4 signals with the demo mode of the Apollo quad record mode. Of course, the entire feed is completely green/magenta.
Good to know, we don't need to trick the F35 that it has entered VTR mode!

Only works with 10bit 444 50p though, when I attempted 12bit 444 50p, it actually shut the O7q down in a weird way. Just black. Almost thought I broke the damn thing!

If its a relatively simple formula for the CD crew to combine 4 psf inputs ....then we might just get lucky!
