F-Stops on T2i not adjusting right.

Hey just bought a T2i with the stock 18-55mm lens. Sometimes you cannot stop down any lower than 4.0 or 4.5. This is in both manual photo mode or Video mode.
When I am able to f-stop to 3.5 on a wide shot, if I zoom in the camera stops up to 5.0. Is there a firmware issue? A bug? A setting I've overlooked or does it sound like the camera or lens is defective??

Thanks for any advice

That's what the lens does. It can only let in so much light at the telephoto end, hence only being open at f5.6. If you want a lens that doesn't do this, you'll need to buy a constant aperture lens.

That number on the side of the lens? 3.5-5.6? That tells you at the wide end it's maximum speed is 3.5, at the telephoto end it will be 5.6.

Nothing wrong with lens. That's just the way it is.

Welcome to the world of DSLR's. Now break out your wallet for some better lenses. :Drogar-Angry(DBG)::Drogar-Angry(DBG)::Drogar-Angry(DBG)::Drogar-Angry(DBG):

Yep. This was a lesson I learned rather quickly. If you need a faster lens at a cheap price, check out the 50mm 1.8. It's like $100 and is a great low light / shallow lens for the price!

Thanks for all the help. Yeah, kinda what I figured..cheap lens comes with the kit. :-(

Not really. Having shot many projects I will tell you that the lower you go in aperture you actually have a narrow focus window now.

Ideally shooting above f/7 for me is when most lenses truly shine. If you are indoors light your scene accordingly.

Just because a lens allows you to go lower does not make it better. Now if you are in a low light / dark situation with no light then you obviously have no choice. I would suggest a nice 24mm , 50mm and 85mm prime all at 1.8 for some great night shots, even then though I use f/2.0

The kit lens at f/3.5 is simply blind at night in many situations so like everyone else stated your going to want to invest in faster lenses. My first suggest would be the 50mm 1.8 as it is very cheap ( $100 ).
