C300: External Recorder

Personally where the market stands now a lot of manufacturers are planning the 2nd gen of their big cameras I would buy something that covers the highspeed and 4k in a pinch needs on the cheap while keeping the great C300 and wait for the next product cycle.

If you have all manual glass something like the GH4 with a dumb canon adapter will get you some extra features and a 2nd small body for angles and specialty shots.

I'm assuming that you don't need highspeed for all shots and just specialty applications.

If I use an external recorder with a monitor, will I need to use the lcd monitor that comes with the C300 cameras?
Like, will I be able to fully access the menus and all that stuff?

I did just this yesterday on an overnight CM shoot with my C500 (used the camera sans Canon LCD and only used my Odyssey 7Q as my monitor). You will not have full access to the menus, but that's not too much of a problem as you might think. I did use the LCD for the initial set up of the camera to put the camera in Cinema Lock mode and make sure I had selected the correct output for the shoot (4K DCI, 23.98fps). All other controls I needed access too through the shoot (ISO, WB, shutter, etc) I read and adjusted through the info display LCD on the back of the camera.

One warning on doing this, though - the O7Q displays a 16:9 crop of the recorded 4K image, so if you're shooting in 4K DCI, then you're actual frame will be a bit wider than what is displayed. I used the EVF to confirm my framing on each new setup. I could have used the EVF to access the menu if I needed to as well, but never did. I fed audio hops through the 1/8" input.

Everything worked a treat, but I would love for CD to update the O7Q to display the full 4K DCI frame instead of just a 16:9 crop.

Really? Fully committed to both c500 and fs700? The facts on the ground bear witness to the fs700 not to the c500. "committed and promised" are very easy things to throw around. Where is the actuality? All in the fs700 camp. Please don't stretch credulity. CD has taken double the money from c500 owners and delivered half the product.

Sorry Mitch, but this weekend I have to rent, yet again a 120fps camera and I am pissed off about it.
Companies prioritise their efforts towards sales of a variant that can theoretically sell more. I guess the number of FS700 owners are much higher than C500. So CD would have prioritised their efforts to get sales from FS700 owners. Nothing wrong in that, except that C500 owners are left high and dry. I am not saying that it is ethical, but it happens all the time in business.

Canon initiated this combined sale. So irritated C500 owners may write to Canon. This is not a good advertisement for C500.

Here is the way it looks to me- I paid for O7Q hardware and feel it is a great unit and money well spent. I paid 1500 up front for promised enhancements to my O7Q- giving CD money to work with to make those enhancements- I made an investment in their company in good faith that they would treat me fairly. Others paid half of what I did. They got the enhancements I didn't. This is known as insult added to injury. They used my bigger investment to first satisfy those with a lower investment. If anything- ethically as you say, it should be the other way around- the Fs700 owners should be charged 1500 because they benefited first.

"it happens all the time in business" So is CD going to send horses heads to all C500 customers to rub it in?

I do this exact same thing with the c500 and O7Q mounted on the Letus Helix Gimble- this is a very sweet set up. Audio into the 1/8" input sounds fine.

Today Convergent Design released our latest firmware update for the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q. Among the new features is the ability for an Odyssey7Q with the Canon RAW Record Option to capture the camera's "4K half RAW" at up to 120p, the fastest output of the camera at the highest quality available.
