I don't think any mic on camera can ever be 'high quality'. However it of course depends on what you would call high quality.
As jade recommended, go read the sticky posts of the audio section, it helped me a lot getting more knowledge of audio, and get a pretty good idea of what kit I should gather.

Maybe high quality would be the wrong phrase , would a external mic such as rode be a major improvement in sound .

We have no idea what your budget is. So how can we make a recommendation?

The most common questions around here is "I have x amount of money, what's the best general purpose mic I can get?"

Well, there's no such thing as a general purpose mic and spending money on a mic without understanding what makes good sound isn't smart. That's why I always tell people to go to the audio forum and read the stickies. All your questions have been answered there, trust me. It even has a Top 5 mic thread and several budget kits already worked out for you. Go read it.

NTG-1 is the phantom powered version of the NTG-2, so it is shorter (better when camera mounted) by the length of a AA battery. Great little mic for $250+/- new, or $150+/- on fleabay.

ok, 300 to 400 say for a mic with far superior sound than the camera mic and will check out the forum

Welcome to the forum Paul.

Glad to have you here.

The short answer to your question is yes indeed it will make a monumental difference.

For the particulars, please check out "the" sound section here:

There you will find this thread which is the most useful and efficient place to start digging in

Thank you for the welcome , so much to learn and everyone has been very helpful , thanks for the info on the difference between the ntg-1 and 2 , will check b&h seem to have the best prices , unless you have any suggestions , I was going to inquire about the length of mic mounted but you were ahead of me , so will go with a ntg-1 , I have been using panasonic dvm63pq , seems reliable , also is it true should never change to different brands midstream ?

Most people seem to believe that it's better to stick with one tape brand for the life of the camera (or the tape heads at least). If you absolutely must change, you should definitely use a cleaning tape before you switch brands as different brands often don't use the exact some lubrication method.

What is the difference from the ntg-1 and ntg-2 and will mic fit on existing mount on camera or should buy shockmount , was going to order one from b&h and they sell alone or for a few more dollars in a kit which includes shockmount and cable ,

NTG2 allows use of a battery, which you don't need as the XH-A1 can give phantom power. I'd go for the kit, as you'll need a shock mount if you want to boom it.

New to forum and thanking all for the help in purchasing a ntg 2 mic . Wondering best setting for shooting indoors under existing conditions , doing handheld and not under the best lighting , would hope to achieve a film like look and saturated color if possible .
