Need help FAST!

I've got a project to do right now; and I need help really fast. My professor isn't really good, in fact, I'm missing a lot of knowledge of the very basics of After Effects; like apply keyframes, etc.

I'm using After Effects 7 Pro on a PC, and I have a few questions; first, how do you apply the Fog 3D? I highlight the section of the video I want to add fog to (in this case, text with black background), and then I click on Fog 3D. Unfortunately, this isn't like some other programs where you just click and they apply everything for you. Right now, I don't see any fog; am I supposed to activate the fog at a certain time to get it to show up or something? Maybe using "keyframes"; which I'm not even sure how to use?

I'm also trying to fade in and out into black for the video; which shouldn't be too hard (use the opacity). But, I can't seem to fade in or out with the audio -- how do you work the audio levels?

I'm having trouble finding a VERY basic and short AE tutorial online; so I kind of need your guys help.

I believe that fog can only be applied if a camera is in place, and all of your layers are in 3d. You also need to drag those layers out quite a far distance to have the 3d fog simulate.

Don't quote me, I'm not exactly sure how 3d fog works, since i've only been told about it.

Good luck.

From what I read you have to have 3D info in the actual file you're working with, i.e. z depth, etc. Maybe not required, but I'm sure it probably helps.

Maybe you can describe the shot then we can help with what you want to do. Is it live action video or 3D elements? There is more than one way to skin a cat.
