EVA1: EVA1 8/3/17 Press Release and Specifications

Oh well, pretty much in the same place as before, deal with canon's ridiculous file sizes and get autofocus, or do without and enjoy 400mbs.

I agree, a whole lot of peoples decisions boils down to this very point. It's interesting to me because, historically speaking, Cinema cameras and cinema lenses never relied on auto-focus. I think that AF is an area of cinematography that will show some of the biggest progresses in technology. It's still in its infancy and still quite primitive when you think about what it really could do. I am not sure how much more of a push there is going to be on resolution, pretty sure 4K is going to hold people over for quite a while. I know people are already talking about 6K and 8K acquisition but the vast majority of people out there are watching video in HD (1080 & 720).

A camera like the EVA-1 with AF equal to or better than the Canon would certainly be a game changer. Very interested to see the images from the EVA-1.

I wonder given the current market if Panasonic could have priced the EVA1 even more aggressively ?
Offering it for 6,000-6,500 Dollars. It would have killed preorders of the C200 in it's tracks especially if it was priced
at 6,000. I understand they need to make a profit but given the fact that in 6 months to 1 year it will probably
be discounted to this price anyway they could have sent out a really strong signal to the competition from the start.

EDIT
I just checked the price of the EVA1 at ProAV in the U.K.

For European customers it is working out at
8,405 Euro (inc Vat) if you add a few batteries, basic accessories and a lens you would be looking
at about 10,000 Euro. IMO 6,500-7,000 Euro (including vat) would have made it a very attractive proposition.

I was expecting it to be a bit cheaper too, but $1000-$1500 would not change as many minds as you'd think. Some people are set on having everything the C200 offers, and more importantly, a camera in their hands within a week or two (if all goes well). October is not that far away...but you'd be surprised what having instant availability does to a person.

I agree with you in part NorBro; however for European customers (and from a sales and marketing point of view) if
the camera was 6,500 Euro including Vat Panasonic could have done what they did with the GH5
and cornered the market. I understand they will not sell nearly as many EVA1's as GH5's but they could have
poached a lot of sales from other manufacturers and made up the difference by offering it for 6,500 Euro inc vat.
JMO.

I'm reminded of Louis CK's bit about the guy on the plane. They unveil brand new in flight wifi and it goes out and the guy is pissed. How quickly we become accustomed to things.

Auto focus on a cinema camera is something I never wanted until I saw how good it could be. I've got a gx85 and when I discovered it did face tracking and such I couldn't wait to play with it, but it's a novelty more than something I could ever rely on.

DPAF on the other hand, is a game changing feature imo. Want to do a dolly shot, but don't have a riding dolly? Good luck pushing the dolly, tilting the camera, and pulling focus. It gets done eventually, but after 12 takes, instead of the 1 or 2 if you had dpaf.

I agree with you when you say game changer, this camera + dpaf would be the end all for me.

Very impressive specs...was hoping for 13 stops, but judging by the photo it is easily 14...also like the idea of the green focusing squares ala VLT...I find focus peaking on the GH5 almost unusable...it's far to deep, whereas on the Shogun it's a very thin line for critical focus...hopefully focus peaking on the EVA is more like the Shogun...Looks like Panasonic just keeps churning out the winners...congratualations Mitch!...This looks like both a stand alone or companion camera.

I'd like to know how to track in focus a subject that is moving, with just one push autofocus. Still I haven't understood very well, do you must push the button for all time?

You keep asking these questions about AF but I think if you need it that bad just get the c200 and deal with Raw, I don't think this camera is going to be that great relying on AF

I think that autofocus is important feature of a camera, but the C200 is more heavy than Eva1, and it seems the lack of CFAST card of 512GB is very discouraging. I just want to know how is possible use the camera at the best.

yes there still is no perfect camera - both these cameras have their strengths and weaknesses depending on needs - you just have to decide what is most important to you.
Eek sorry such a cliche but that's how it is...

Ask Me Anything.

Didn't realize on the other thread that you were refering to this one so I'm just reposting here:

Mitch, please reconsider the lack of 422 4K 50p in-camera again.

The lack of this just made this camera (at least for me) pretty much useless. After you do 10bit, you will never want to go back to 8bit because it is just impossible to grade well, 8bit is simply put low quality footage. I've been basically cameraless for last year or so since the projects I do these days call for Arri or Red so sold away my FS7 that was just gathering dust, but I was thinking of getting this as a personal camera for passion projects and because every now and then there is a project where the mobility is the key (and this type of cameras are hard to rent because they are more owner based than rental based due to the low price). EVA offers that mobility and flexibility in shooting with small size and I was really expecting this to be sort of FS7 killer, which this could be with 10bit 50/60p. Though the choice of EF mount is bit strange and limiting, would have much rather seen M43 for adaptability cause so often need to use PL glass. I don't know if this choice was done to make the AF better but that should really not be a priority.

Anyways back to the main point: I don't know if this 8bit vs 10bit choice was made because you want to protect LT sales, but to me it looks like that ship has already sailed. LT wasn't able to replace FS7 or C300s for that matter except with selected few people who are having hard time trying to praise how awesome LT image is online to the masses that go with the flow. In this market it is unfortunately not enough to produce a great camera. It has to sort of become a standard cause if producer has to ask you what is LT you already lost the game, they will go with the camera they know and use on every project. Only way to penetrate this market is to do something truly awesome and sell it so cheap compered to specs.. that is how FS7 replaced C300 as they "standard" cam on low end productions and also why C300 mkII was unable to take the share back. LT was discounted to 12000 bucks here in China like year ago May, which was basically just after it was released. The reseller said no one wants them. LT is great camera but it missed it's momentum. Only way to eat sales from others and gain userbase when entering the market bit late is to revolutionize it.

If nothing else 422 10bit 50/60p should be atleast a paid firmware upgrade. Using external recorder beats up the purpose of having a camera you can otherwise basically wave with one hand. Personally I shoot everything in 50p project rate, just to have that slow-mo possibility in post and I just can't do 8bit, the clients deserve better. Love that IR filter function so much that really makes me go crazy to encounter this 10bit problem. I was so sure I would buy this if the image quality is anything like on LT but now you lost a customer. If you were to upgrade this, I would suggest you do that fast while you could still have an edge over competitors with 5.7K sensor.

I've discovered that the RAW upgrade of the FS5 now is free, someone told me that the FS5 Mark II will probably come out soon.

Is it really true that the SDI raw output foresees 10bit 422 only?

Even 12bit raw versions like Sony raw has some issues - so how can 10bit raw work?
