EVA1: EVA1 8/3/17 Press Release and Specifications

A camera like the EVA-1 with AF equal to or better than the Canon would certainly be a game changer.

Nobody has been able to replicate AF as good as Canon's DP AF, so if this is an essential feature for you the only choice right now is Canon. I don't see this changing until there is a different AF technology that is as good as Canon's.

Mitch, please reconsider the lack of 422 4K 50p in-camera again.

This might be a camera processing power issue. ( the Canon C300 II has the same 4K 60p issue ) The Varicam LT has 3 times as much processing power as the EVA1.

After you do 10bit, you will never want to go back to 8bit because it is just impossible to grade well, 8bit is simply put low quality footage.

I'm shooting with the low end GH5, but feel the same way after working with 10-bit GH5 files. ( I don't want to shoot anything 8-bit if I can help it )

An external recorder will provide 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 for the EVA1 ( and my GH5 ), and might also give you the option of RAW too.

Otherwise, it sounds like a Varicam LT is the camera you really want.

A chart like that can only properly be interpreted on a video scope; there are 16 bars discernible there but it all depends on how many of the "white" bars are blown out. Assuming that there is detail in the 2nd stop, this shows that their claim of 14 stops is easily substantiated and likely conservative.

I also posted the waveform image.

Is the included LCD removable and easily swapped out for aftermarket (ie Gratical Eye or SmallHD Focus)? Or do you have to leave both on?

If using something like the smallHD Focus, can all of the Panasonic features pass through to it such as the magical green dot focusing system? Mitch - any reason you wouldn't recommend the smallHD Focus 5" monitor only solution?

The included LCD is removable with a thumbscrew. I'm not sure what info can be sent out to other monitors. I'll have a camera to play with for awhile this weekend and I can explore the details.

Didn't realize on the other thread that you were refering to this one so I'm just reposting here:

Mitch, please reconsider the lack of 422 4K 50p in-camera again.

The lack of this just made this camera (at least for me) pretty much useless. After you do 10bit, you will never want to go back to 8bit because it is just impossible to grade well, 8bit is simply put low quality footage. I've been basically cameraless for last year or so since the projects I do these days call for Arri or Red so sold away my FS7 that was just gathering dust, but I was thinking of getting this as a personal camera for passion projects and because every now and then there is a project where the mobility is the key (and this type of cameras are hard to rent because they are more owner based than rental based due to the low price). EVA offers that mobility and flexibility in shooting with small size and I was really expecting this to be sort of FS7 killer, which this could be with 10bit 50/60p. Though the choice of EF mount is bit strange and limiting, would have much rather seen M43 for adaptability cause so often need to use PL glass. I don't know if this choice was done to make the AF better but that should really not be a priority.

Anyways back to the main point: I don't know if this 8bit vs 10bit choice was made because you want to protect LT sales, but to me it looks like that ship has already sailed. LT wasn't able to replace FS7 or C300s for that matter except with selected few people who are having hard time trying to praise how awesome LT image is online to the masses that go with the flow. In this market it is unfortunately not enough to produce a great camera. It has to sort of become a standard cause if producer has to ask you what is LT you already lost the game, they will go with the camera they know and use on every project. Only way to penetrate this market is to do something truly awesome and sell it so cheap compered to specs.. that is how FS7 replaced C300 as they "standard" cam on low end productions and also why C300 mkII was unable to take the share back. LT was discounted to 12000 bucks here in China like year ago May, which was basically just after it was released. The reseller said no one wants them. LT is great camera but it missed it's momentum. Only way to eat sales from others and gain userbase when entering the market bit late is to revolutionize it.

If nothing else 422 10bit 50/60p should be atleast a paid firmware upgrade. Using external recorder beats up the purpose of having a camera you can otherwise basically wave with one hand. Personally I shoot everything in 50p project rate, just to have that slow-mo possibility in post and I just can't do 8bit, the clients deserve better. Love that IR filter function so much that really makes me go crazy to encounter this 10bit problem. I was so sure I would buy this if the image quality is anything like on LT but now you lost a customer. If you were to upgrade this, I would suggest you do that fast while you could still have an edge over competitors with 5.7K sensor.

This is not something to "reconsider." Choices were made in the design of the camera. It is hardware-limited from doing what you ask. That ship has sailed.

Is it really true that the SDI raw output foresees 10bit 422 only?

Even 12bit raw versions like Sony raw has some issues - so how can 10bit raw work?

Sony uses 12-bit Linear RAW while EVA1 uses 10-bit Log RAW. I and most others would argue that the use of Linear encode is inefficient and that our 10-bit Log RAW actually contains more useful data. Most RAW structures are encoded Log, including ARRI.

Do you know at what resolution the lens effectively becomes the OLPF? Just curious.

It's not simply about resolution; it also has to do with photosite size. I'm not familiar enough with the science to give a number, but at a certain point a sensor of a given size can have so many photosites that it no longer needs an OLPF in order to hide any aliasing issues.

Mitch, you should do a thorough review of the camera. Like an AbelCine vid. You don't need my advice and Panasonic is all set, but people watching you specifically diving deep about the camera in your particular demeanor would be good for business.

Thanks. When appropriate I might just do that.

So the cropped mode for 240p slow motion moves the camera from a 1.6x crop FOV (compared to FF) to a 2x FOV (same as GH5)?

Mitch, in your opinion, what's the best feature on the EVA-1 that hasn't been highlighted prominently or discussed much here? What's great that is being overlooked?

Can you speak to whether the sample footage released will have any GH5 footage comparisons / camera matching? I saw GH5s behind the scenes in Iceland, would be great to see how the EVA-1 image matches up with GH5 for intercutting
