EVA1: EVA1 8/3/17 Press Release and Specifications

Great! Now I can order. I will have a hands on in a couple of hours. Excited by the possibilities this lightweight can add.

I see a lot of 4:2:0s in there.... and data rates lower than FS7 II... Will have to wait for real world examples.

From what I have read the 422 10bit update is coming sooner rather than later. Reading the same as everyone else.

This is not a FS7 or GH5 comparable in any way shape or form. It looks to be built from the ground up to work with a Varicam look. IMO, after the last few years of working on Varicams that's worth the door price +, I just have to see the image for myself first. Now like others Im not at all interested in long GOP anything or 8 bit anything, but a short wait isn't anything I will worry about.

I'll be a suck-egg mule. I no longer have any excuses as to why I stink at being a DP. If you can't make a fabulous documentary, commercial, or feature with this thing, you need to get another career. Life is good!

• 5.7K Super 35 CMOS sensor

• 17.25M effective photosites

• 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 internal capture with V-Log/V-Gamut

• Nimble 2.65-pound body
• In-camera electronic image stabilization

• Up to 60p in 4K

• Up to 240fps in 2K (cropped)

• EF mount

I was holding out a faint hope for something better than 8bit 4:2:0 at 4K 60P. I guess an external recorder will help with that if you want or require better.

Hopefully Panny keeps plugging away for slightly better specs on 4K 60P internal recording performance, even 8 bit 4:2:2 might be a nice compromise.

I assumed AF wouldn't be anything to compete with the companies that make native lenses for their 35mm sensor cameras. Canon is still the market leader with AF. If AF is really important to you, than Canon is the way to go.

This is a real whiz banger of a camera on specs alone. Price is fair but probably could have been a little more aggressive to take market share from Canon and Sony.

I know it probably wasn't ever realistic, but I was hoping for a shocker announcement that it would have some sort of mind blowing autofocus feature to leave Canon in the dust. It seemed like the super high res sensor could have been a benefit in some way to pulling that off. Wonder if it's something that could still happen through firmware.

Oh well, pretty much in the same place as before, deal with canon's ridiculous file sizes and get autofocus, or do without and enjoy 400mbs. Maybe these magical green squares you're all talking about will be enough?

I know it's coming from a partisan place, but you really have to see how these focus squares work. When I get a chance I'll shoot a demo video for everyone to see. It makes accurate focusing a real breeze, and the feature takes no time to get used to. Really clever implementation.

I'm playing with Green Focus Squares now on the LT and it's different but kind of cool. Definitely have to get used to it. Never hurts to have another tool available thats's for sure.

I've got to say, whenever I've been called in to explain the functioning on something like an HPX or DVX200 or UX or something, that green-square focus is the #1 most-requested feature I have been asked for from VariCam shooters -- once they go green, they never want to go back.

I must be the only shooter on Earth that doesn't like the green-square focus assist. I found it to just be in the way. I prefer to have great peaking assist me instead of something on-screen obstructing what I'm actually trying to focus on. I also prefer "plain" peaking over colored peaking in most situations. I've found that even colored peaking can obstruct and fool you.

Here is the dynamic range chart Mitch posted on his Twitter feed of the EVA1. It looks like the 14 stops are certainly there. The 14th notch might end up being a little noisy in the shadows if it is brought back up in post. But yeah, it looks like there is definitely 13 stops of usable DR and 14 on the edge.

A chart like that can only properly be interpreted on a video scope; there are 16 bars discernible there but it all depends on how many of the "white" bars are blown out. Assuming that there is detail in the 2nd stop, this shows that their claim of 14 stops is easily substantiated and likely conservative.

Is the included LCD removable and easily swapped out for aftermarket (ie Gratical Eye or SmallHD Focus)? Or do you have to leave both on?

If using something like the smallHD Focus, can all of the Panasonic features pass through to it such as the magical green dot focusing system? Mitch - any reason you wouldn't recommend the smallHD Focus 5" monitor only solution?

This is more of a curiosity, but, why is the 400mbps All-I feature not launching until 2018? I understand it will be ready for the GH5 by end of summer, and the reasoning was merely because of v90 SD card availability. Why no 400mbps All-I at launch?

I definitely agree that it can be distracting and I actually find all peaking kind of distracting, but the idea is to be able to quickly turn it on or off. Assigning the function to a convenient button like on the handle (if possible) and being able to quickly toggle it on or off works best for me.

RED's edge focus is the best I have ever seen. So insanely good. But it has to be toggled on or off because you can't use it when it's on if you know what it does to the screen.
