EVA1: EVA1 8/3/17 Press Release and Specifications

So just to clarify, the 4k 60p is 4:2:0 and 8 bit and will always be?

And is there a rough idea as to when we can expect the firmware update to shoot 4k, 4:2:2, 10 bit at 400mbps? Spring 2018? Summer 2018?

Correct on the 4K.

I would hope for Spring but there's not an officially released date. Now that I've said that I'm sure you'll all be posting that Mitch Said It's This!!! and I'll get in trouble.

I see a lot of 4:2:0s in there.... and data rates lower than FS7 II... Will have to wait for real world examples.

It is important to compare similar formats.

The FS7 may have higher data rates but those are exclusively used for 50p and 60p 4k. For 30p the 300mbps is actually lower than the 400mbps used on the EVA1. 24p on the FS7 only uses 240mbps while the EVA1 will likely use around 320mbps for 24p. Assuming it does use less bits since it is intra. If it still manages to use the full 400mbps for 24p even better.

So the FS7 only provides higher data rates and more 4:2:2 options if you absolutely need to have 4k 60p recorded internally. For the $2k price difference between the two cameras you can buy an external recorder for an even higher bitrate 4k 60p from the EVA1 if you really need it.

EVA1 more or less provides the same options for 4:2:2 except for 4k 60p. Every other format from 4k 30p down to HD allows for 4:2:2. Panasonic just provides a much more detailed breakdown of all the recording options the camera has.

If anyone cares to check my Facebook or Twitter feeds, I posted photos showing the EVA1's 14+ stops of dynamic range. Gotta head off on some business (days like this a cray-cray for me!) so I don't have time to post here.
