EVA1: EVA1 8/3/17 Press Release and Specifications

For everyone who has not had the pleasure of using this function you are in for a treat. It is insanely easy and precise to focus once you get used to it, and getting there is very quick. It really works great.

I've got to say, whenever I've been called in to explain the functioning on something like an HPX or DVX200 or UX or something, that green-square focus is the #1 most-requested feature I have been asked for from VariCam shooters -- once they go green, they never want to go back.
 
"On first release, available bit rates will range from as low as 8Mbps up to 150Mbps, depending on frame rate, resolution, and codec. In a future firmware update, 400Mbps recording will be added". Future? What?

Just like the similar GH5 400mbps functionality is coming in a firmware update, the same will be true on the EVA1. At the same time we will rollout the 5.7K RAW output.
 
If this works the same way as on the HVX/HPX/AC/UX cameras, then it will be one button press to trigger autofocus that then "locks in" and returns to manual focus. However, on all those other Panasonic handhelds, holding the button in results in autofocus continuously operating until you release the button. That would be an inconvenient, but technically possible, way to get continuous autofocus. Obviously it remains to be seen whether the EVA1 operates that same way, or if it is strictly one-touch.

The smallest battery looks set to drive the camera for a bit over two hours, the largest battery will offer four hours of continuous use, and the batteries charge about as fast as they discharge. I believe Mitch said the camera will include a dual charger; I would guess it would be the same unit as included with the UX180/UX90. If so, that should mean charging should take about the same time as discharging; with one battery on the camera and two on the charger you should be set for all day use (and probably overkill; you could probably go all day with one on the camera and one on the charger).

Technology marches on, rapidly. To avoid obsolescence, buy your gear the day before you die.
Or, as I usually say, don't buy anything until you NEED it. Then, buy what you need to do the job, and make your money with it. And if you don't need it anymore, sell it on ebay to recoup the cost.

I don't think there's any case like the old BetaSP or Original VariCam days, where an owner-operator would buy a $100,000 camera and make their living off it for five years or more. Those days are behind us.

For high-speed shooting, the full sensor is used for up to 120 fps. When going up to 240 fps, it crops in to a 4/3-sized patch off the sensor. Notably, that 4/3 patch will still be a full (approx) 4096 x 2160 in size, so it's possible that the 2K/240 fps might look extremely good.

Mitch -- any word on how it will make that high-speed 2K? Scaling the 4K sensor pixels down to 2K? Or pixel-skipping?

There's some sly math that is used where the frame is first sampled in half and then downscaled. For 2K/120p, the full 5.7K sensor is averaged to 2.8K, then the image fully downscaled from there. For 2K/240p, the cropped area is around 4.5K. This is averaged to around 2.2K and then downsampled from there. The result is high resolving 2K/HD imaging without artifacts and efficient processing. This is part of what 5.7K gets you.
 
What recorder is needed to get the full 5k 10bit raw? Noticed the Inferno only does 4k make resolution from what I read. Also any idea on how long or estimate on when these features will be updated? Until they are this camera is basically just a GH5..

We are working with partner companies to get support for the 5.7K RAW. As we move forward there will be additional announcements. No official announcement on when the firmware update will come, but look for it sooner rather than later. We have an expected schedule for the development but did not want to delay the release of the camera for these added functions.

Okay, follow-up: do we know if the EVA1 employs an OLPF filter? Or is it using similar technology to the GH5?

so, wifi-functionality is included, or does it need an extra dongle?

As long as you hold the button it will continue to autofocus. But the speed may not be what you want out of continuous autofocus.
 
I found in specification that there will be pre rec function. Is it pre rec buffer? If I undarstand properly, how long it pre buffer 4k footage?
Second question: still grab will be full 5,7k Raw or 4k jpg image?
