EOS Utility Software is a dud

Why can't Canon make their software so it will really work with the 7D to download the footage????

Sure is irritating to not be able to do that. Now I gotta go buy a card reader.
I got version 21.0 Any suggestions?

I don't understand? I bought a card reader but never use it. I use the EOS utility to download all of my footage via USB connection.

I don't understand either... I don't have a reader, I use the EOS software and the USB cable

I am cheap and got a cheap card reader but never used it... EOS software rocks and it brings all my footages into computer every time!

I use a card reader, but sometimes I just attach the camera via USB, open the file folder and copy the video files. You don't need the EOS software to do that.

Well, the EOS Utility is a very, very, very useful tool. It does a lot of things. I’ve been using it (as I mentioned) to download all of my footage. The Utility neatly puts all of your footage in folders and names then perfectly. I’ve also been using the Utility to monitor my footage on a laptop. You basically have all the controls of the camera straight to your laptop (you don’t even have to touch the camera other than turning it on). If you have an Auto focusing lens you can even use the utility to focus your shot….how cool is that. I’ve also used it to make my own custom picture profiles. There’s more to it but so far this is what I’ve used it for.

My cheap $10 card reader from Wal-Mart has been used only once. I have no complaints.

Now you're making me want to dig in to the EOS Utility. I got in the habit of using the card reader to download cards onto a big USB drive with any old laptop I could grab on location and haven't even begun to explore the EOS Utility. My bad.

with only 2 clicks... I can import all my images and footages from the camera onto the computer on its own folder nice and neat... when I was working with HMC 150 footages, yeah I used the reader a lot to copy and paste the clips over... the EOS utility is the time saver!!!

Hmmm...I've just been using a card reader since I got my 7D. Perhaps I should give the EOS utility a go and see if it'll play nice with Windows 7.

Here’s the thing about this software…in live monitoring mode you can see the same image you get on the LCD (actually a little more). If there were a hack to remove those upper and lower ‘see through” pillar boxes, the focusing square and the red dot, then we would have the ability to capture an image larger than 16:9 (actually the full 4:3 sensor...which would be great for anamorphic capture) at 4:2:2. I guess Canon was smart (or not) for not allowing that because one wouldn’t need to use HDMI capture devices. But a good hack should make that work (IMO)

I really don’t know. I’ve only captured a few seconds at a time with not a lot of motion. But the motion looked decent to me (this is on my faster desktop PC). I used Virtual Dub to capture the footage. <<<Let me Clarify....I captured a snapshot view of the desktop. Not a direct capture.

Edit: Isn't USB 2 480Mbps? Not fast enough for uncompressed maybe (I don't really know) but for Cineform or any other type of compression...why not?

Don't forget about the timelapse the software does...it's fantastic for that.

Here is my first attempt:

Edit: One other thing...the live view seems around 15 fps as far as I can tell...no where near 24. Maybe you are seeng more frames with a faster comp but I doubt it.

Well, remember I said I couldn't tell. It was just some head shots with not a lot of motion. But you could be right.
