EIGHTEEN SECONDS by Jack, Zac and Mac

congrats on the audience award. Loved the FIlm! :)

I think it dq'd for not having a main character "Eric" or "Erica"? (I might be wrong?) Maybe they were actually Eric and Erica but we had no way of knowing.

Congratulations on the audience favorite award! I think that's kind of like the Grand Jury Prize for most fests, right (i.e. Sundance, etc.). Excellent.

haha thanks folks :)

It's like 8AM in Spain which means Mac went to bed about 2 hours ago and won't be up for another 6 or so probably but hopefully he will get his butt on here soon.

What disqualified this film from a prize?
we did not say the character's name 'Eric" or show it in print anywhere.

Actually it's the opposite of Grand Jury Prize. Grand Jury is what the comitte selects and its the top prize. Audience Award is voted on by the Audience. So one is the "Experts" and the other is "the people". The Audience award is typically more fun, often a more genre piece that may show in the late night slot at Telluride or Sundance for example.

El Mariachi was the "Audience Favorite" at Sundance in 1993 and "Ruby in Paradise" was the Grand Jury winner for example. In big fests I think maybe they can sometimes be the same but not sure.

Obviously everything here is "Audience Award" but this way the top three films are the official winners and recieve prizes. "Audience Award" is a very generous compromise that hopefully reflects audience opinion without steeling thunder from the top 3 that complied with the rules 100%. Thanks Barry and Jarred! If Mac enters again I will be his complience specialist, lol

Lol! He sure needs that compliance specialist! He's got way too much talent to be booted 3 for 3, so no more technicalities! :)

Jack wrote this in another thread, and I think its fair to same for your last few fests, but I love the editing. Your images flow, its interesting, and it compliments the stories you are telling.

What fest was he booted from besides sci-fest?

Ah, thanks for the clarification, Jack ... since I've never actually been able to haul my butt to a festival yet, I can see where I was misguided.

That said, you can also see which film typically does better, commercially speaking. El Mariachi really opened things up for RR with that Audience Award, vs. the 'experts' that chose Ruby In Paradise ... well, I've never even heard of that film.

I think you are using the plural you as in "your guys' images" but if not, just want to clarify that Mac is the editor on this. Also, while I am at it, he is the DP and he and Zac the primary filmmakers. I had a basic idea for a story which evovled a lot in production and post production.

Well it can have to do with the fact that those are the kind of films that win the audience award. But the other is more presitigous. One will get you an agent for sure. The other is likely to get you distribution. I worked at Sundance in 98. Why do I sound like Rainman all of a sudden.

Hmmm, distribution or agent? I'd choose distribution, though I think you're saying that's more likely from the GRAND JURY award?

Congrats Mac, Zac and Jack! This was an incredible film and judging from the title of your award, had the technicalities been overlooked, you'd be taking home top prize. I've been a longtime fan of your guys' work and I'm glad I can place amongst you.

Well it's just confirmation that you know what the hell you are doing :)
Of course if you get distribution you are gonna get an agent too, though.
But look at Pi. It won the jury directing" award at sundance, got limited release but started a career.

Hey.

Super congrats to you all. It sounds to me like you got the highest number of votes from the DVX community; I don't know whether you really care about the prize or not, but I think it's more imporant to have achieved exactly what you set out to do. I think you did that and then some.....

If you didnt have it already your film has the respect and admiration of a lot of us on this board.

With a different editing style, music, and a 'yelp' from Jack you could also submit this for comedy fest! So you might win a prize yet.....

It's funny. If you shoot on film and ask them to push it a couple of stops in developing then you get grain and it's just part of the look, like grains or knots in a nice piece of wood furniture. But if you get grain in DV it's deffect of the medium vs. an organic part of it. I guess film is a chemical process and we expectd digital processes to do anything and everything RIGHT NOW.

Honestly the newer stocks are so good that even if you push them, or flash them, they still dont get too grainy.... its crazy how good film is right now. Its exactly the reason why, neither RED, nor HD will ever replace film. you just cant get that look anyother way.
