E-mount FS700II 4K camcorder?

If that is indeed the spec, can't see how it's anything other than a replacement for FS700. It would seem it does everything and more.

So did you guys read this? According to Philip Bloom, it's going to be called the F7. Really weird name as it's a cheap, plastic build; yet the name implies that it's going to sit above the F5 (which has a nice professional build quality).

PB says it's to be priced around $8K. So I wonder if the FS700 is now going to get a big price drop and take the spot of the FS100, and the F7 will be in the middle, then the F5? The names are just so confusing.

In any case, I can't get a new camera till 2015 since I'm buying some new glass in a few weeks. I guess that will last way longer than the F8 which will probably come out next year :) Man.... cameras are becoming like toilet paper. So quick to change and disposable. It's kind of awesome, but makes you broke.

How come we haven't heard any of this anywhere else? Calling it the F7 seems odd, though I guess if you think about it it's not necessarily like the numbers mean anything. Maybe the number is more about the release date than the feature-set or the market segment. I mean Canon does a similar thing where the number of digits indicates the market segment but the number itself isn't really an indicator of comparative performance, 1D, 5D, 6D, 7D? You can't tell which is best based on the number...

$8K? Haven't seen that anywhere else either, but I guess one consideration is that you still need an EVF/monitor for it to work. I guess we will see, though. For all we know they'll release some update for the FS700 as well?

I know people get really worried about new cameras, but frankly I'm happy for new cameras to come out, if it's amazing I'll sell my FS700 and buy one of these if the price is right. If it means I can get compressed 4k without my 7Q I could sell my FS700 and 7Q and more than cover the cost of the new camera that may be more convenient or better performing. On the other hand, besides supporting 4K it seems like the new camera may not offer much over the FS700, and may still end up being inferior to an FS700+7Q once the 7Q compressed 4k firmware comes out.

Sodd it. I'm going to buy an Axiom. Then I will only ever hat to upgrade the bits that need upgrading and in 10 years time I'll still be using the same camera - just like Trigger and his broom...

You're Better off Gene. I'm waiting too, sounds like if we buy this camera 3 months later we'll be in the same boat as we are with the fs700. I agree that the build quality doesnt match up with the f5/55. Plus I want internal recoding. Not sure how the r5 will fit with this design, the odyssey 7q adds bulk. Maybe in 2015 they'll have a 12 bit, 4k HFR camera for $12/15 grand? Strangely this new XDCAM doesn't totally excite me. At least not yet :)

I dont see why it should excite any 700/7q owners, seems like the FS700 will give the same or better images the only upgrade is a slightly tidier package.

Incidentally IMO a tidy package is a big deal, my main bugbear with the F3/BMShuttle/Vlock is not the image it is the mass..

Not that surprising that it doesn't feel very exciting as it seems it will probably just be an old image sensor (FS700/F5 sensor probably) dropped into a slightly different (bulkier) body design. It's not exciting, but if the price is right and it's enough of an incremental upgrade or at least more convenient or less expensive than my FS700+7Q, I might have to think about trading up. Seems like it might just be a good chance for Sony to consolidate or organize what is now sort of an odd market segment that starts with the FS700 and ends with the F5, where the F5 costs more but doesn't really provide much additional functionality (except for the recent 4k hack), but the FS700 has a strong feature set and good price but is now very dependent on the slow-developing 7Q. In some ways the 7Q still feels like a hack for the FS700, and not very convenient with it's only currently supporting 4k as ridiculously huge uncompressed raw.

There is a reason the C300 is still so popular when the FS700 and F5 offer such a superior feature set at more competitive prices. Maybe Sony's new camera will help them compete better.

Heh, I don't know, that's what they said about RED years ago, but the upgrade process has proven to be a big pain and the ass and really slow down camera releases. I should know, I ordered a Dragon upgrade for my scarlet over 1.5 years ago and they still haven't even started processing those upgrades (Good thing I sold the camera a few months ago). I'd rather just sell a camera and buy a new one since that can be done in a day and you can upgrade to any other camera you choose.

Yes, what I'm struggling with the most with the FS700 is quick jobs that need handheld etc. it works fairly well using the low weight SEL 50mm and 35mm. But add a 7Q and it falls apart again. I lust for a 7Q, but mostly to get rid of the edge contrast issue, so would probably only use the 4KtoHD.
I could get a A7S as a small cam for some situations, but I feel like the image A7S look better than that of the FS700 without the 7Q... So that mean that much of the time the FS700 would just be sitting there... And now this new one, could sell the FS700 and buy that one. But then I'd only have one camera. Gah! Too many choices! ;)

I've seen a couple of items saying that it will be the FS7. That name would seem to make more sense, placing it between the FS700 and the F5. I'm really intrigued to see whether or not it has RAW. At that point in the lineup, you'd imagine that it would. And the original Chinese leak also said that it had. On the other hand if they give do give it RAW, where does that leave the F5? The F5 will still be a better camera, but by the time you've bought all the bits for it, it will be enormously more expensive than the new one.

I wonder if one of the reasons that Sony have been at pains to say that it is not a replacement to the FS700 is that they feel a debt to Convergent Design, after bringing them on board to develop the interface to the Odyssey. CD will naturally be keen to see sales of the FS700 continue.

I bet FS7. No raw and maximum 180fps. 240p + raw for the R5 for the F5. You don't release a product better than a more expensive product.

Yet the FS700 has RAW and 240fps and will still cost less than the F5 or F7/FS7...

I thought it sounded like the FS7 may have raw over SDI like the FS700 has. And it seems a little silly for the new camera not to have 240fps HD/2K since the FS700/F5/F55 all have it. It really does seem like it might just be a fixed FS700, same basic features in a new design and probably no stupid edge highlights and more professional compression and 4K. If so, it may do pretty well, though I do like that my FS700 is small and light and lasts a long time on a small battery and this new camera may not keep those features.

You have to assume it will be minimum 10 bit 50mbs HD, have internal 4K, improved form factor. That's enough to excite FS owners methinks, as it improves on all the areas currently lacking.

While I think the FS7Q combo + SLog has a much nicer image than the C300, the C300 has a nicer, pre-graded broadcast ready internal codec which is very convenient and why it's such a good seller. FS7Q needs grading and on lots of low budget doc / reality stuff, they just want it ready right out of the camera.

I shot some reality stuff lately for quick cash and they just want the internal AVCHD which just pains me because it looks so bad compared to the 7Q, but it's graded with small files sizes and ready to go. That's where the C300 shines and where Sony needs to catch up.

As for the 7Q being bulky for handheld, I just have it where the EVF would be and it works perfect and is super light. Ergonomics improved greatly with the 7Q IMO depending on how you set it up.

Dont need to worry about FS7 or whatever its called - sell up and buy an iPhone 6 - that does 240fps. What else could you need!? ;)

with recordable LUTs for 7Q sLog we would catch up with the C300 in one go. But we have experienced that C-D needs a lot of time for providing features to the 7Q.

Yes that's why it will still be in the line-up and why this is not called the FS700 Mark II. There's no way Sony is making a camera that has more features than the FS700 and F5 for less money, that just doesn't work. The FS700 will have its thing, and the FS7 will have its thing, and the F5 will have its thing. They have to do.

The only way I see this is,

-FS700 having the options of RAW 4K, and 240p at 2K continuous to external recorder,
-F5 having the same plus internal XAVC 10 bit, FZ mount, Much higher build, nicer EVF, better integration with R5 recorder, ProRes and DnxHD, and even 4K internal perhaps.
-FS7 having not having Raw 4K, or 240p, but internal 4K XAVC, Internal NDs, nice ergonomics for broadcast, etc. But not raw and 240, that would simply make the FS700 obselete, and the F5 half obselete.

Without raw and 240p, the three cameras co-exist pretty solidly.

I suspect you're joking, but I would hesitate to buy anything with a CMV12000 sensor in it. Fortunately, the Axiom sensor is supposed to be upgradable. With any luck, by the time it'the Axiom is officially released, a better sensor (i.e., greater light sensitivity and dynamic range and little or no fixed-pattern noise) will be available.

I was talking handheld without any sort of rig, not shoulder mount or anything. Then the FS700 is already a bit heavy, or at least not well balanced. Maybe by putting the 7Q so it sort of goes to the right to counter the left-centric weight a bit...
Managed to do a 2x45 min shoot of a show by holding the FS700 only by the handle this weekend. But man does it get heavy after a while. It didn't help that the venue was packed and super hot, so I had to hold it away from me cause I was dripping sweat on it otherwise! ;)

I own the fs700/7Q as well as recently the A7s.... and the A7s is definitely better than the fs700 internal. Of course... adding the 7Q changes that... but not without its shortfalls (these new firmware updates have been raging hell on me).

If Sony delivers the FS700 in a better or more shoulder friendly form and display/EVF on the side and better codec (XAVC)
but still stays with NP-Fs and cheapo memory cards (XQD) it will be a winner.
Maybe a little late, but I like open mounts and never updated my trusty FS100...
It may be just me: But I'm not onterested in HFR and RAW that much. Give me 50/60p + 10bit and most of us will be happy!
