hey guys.. Im trying to upres my dvx footage Ive found instructions on the web such as this: http://www.rippletraining.com/editing_24p_in_final_cut_pro_new_.html
but its only detailing final cut, Im using a windows based editor called NewTek SpeedEdit. Its a good program and ive got tons of capturing options and rendering options to choose from. but which do I actually need to capture to to upres my footage... Ive seen amazing results like this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSM6ZOSmQhc

I would love to learn this technique.

You uprez when you export. Not when capturing.
You can tell your editing program to export at a greater pixel aspect - many NLEs can do this.
Or you can use a software product like INSTANT HD.
It does not improve your footage...rather it helps it to look correct when being played back in the larger HD pixel aspect ratios.

Yup Stewart hit the nail on the head. Uprezzing doesn't actually improve how your footage looks, but at the very least it makes your footage HD-Resolution which helps how it looks when played back on an HD display. Also it makes for good results on Youtube HD.

I'll give you a little step by step of what I personally do to get my footage ready for Youtube HD and Vimeo

1. Film in 24p with camera set in Squeeze mode
2. Import footage with Sony Vegas in an "NTSC DV 24p Widescreen" Project
3. Edit video as I normally would
4. Export as a MainConcept AVC (MP4) File, with the resolution set to 1280 x 720, frame rate at 23.976, Interlace: None (Progressive), and bitrate around 4,000,000 bps.

brett my man...hows the film going??

i get pretty decent results (even though i want better) with this method in premiere

http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/images/cs4.jpg click to make it bigger

check out some of my results....

my old method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfBUhzkQVDU&feature=channel

new method ( which i linked you on above) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c8f3-_FKaE&feature=channel

heres one on vimeo with that method above. its nice and dark and may suit your upcoming horror film

both are good i guess...even though i want better :) still trying though.

the settings are for Premiere but u can use it as a guide for ur software

jeesus... that is amazing.. I dont know if I can believe that those shots are from a dvx.. but i do.. what is your process?

I just use the scaler built into compressor, but I guess that isn't really an option for you. Even though I can't help too much with your workflow, I can let you know that scaled DVX footage can still look awesome. Here's an example of how my stuff looks:

Hey yeah I'm curious too! What exactly do you mean by "scaler built into the compressor"? Your footage looks amazing. Also the actors are clearly professional, I'm so used to seeing DVX footage on youtube with high school actors, that alone caught me off guard. Storyline is very interesting too, though I've met a few people in the world who really shouldn't be allowed to reproduce haha

This looks fantastic! Are you sure this is upscaled DVX footage? It's very impressive. What software did you use for the uprezzing?

Very nice!

Thanks for the kind critiques!

Here's how I did it. I worked with the footage all through FCS 2 as SD and then used Compressor to export a 720p H.264 mov. Other than dialling in the resolution, bit rate, and format settings I made sure to use the best resizing method under the frame controls tab (statistical prediction). Other than that, the quality of the look has everything to do with colour grading and a good workflow that preserves detail. Aside from shooting good originals, there really isn't all that much work involved in "upressing" footage. I still haven't tried Instant HD though, so maybe it could look even better. Who knows?

I heard your supposed to turn down the detail level, and raise the V Detail Level and Detail Coring. Is that true, or just for preference. Im doing a shoot tomorrow I'd like to upress at the quality of some of the samples shown in this thread.

well i duno if my uprezzing was one that you liked...but thats generally what i do (not with uprezzing in mind really) to get better quality footage in my opinion. I always shoot with detail at -3 or -4 ( u can always turn up the sharpness in post if you want)... and turn up the coring to reduce noise. I also always shoot with my master ped low at -8 or lower depending on the look i want ( i like contrasty images)

what kinda shoot do you have ?

Its a silent musical, if that makes any sense...its called Hoagie's Big Day.

Anyway, what is normal coring #, just wondering? Also, what do u set the V-Detail to?

I shoot with detail level at around -4
V- detail level enhances detail thats already there and can introduce noise. so with ur detail level already down the V detail wont do much...so i;d just leave that at 0

and coring smoothes out noise...so i'd put at around +6 to reduce noise

Lower master ped reduces noise, gives more contrast ...crushes blacks. -8 is what i generally shoot with.

Barry Green's dvx dvd says its best to lower the detail level if you wanna blow up the image to reduce egde enhancement. U dont want it 2 low though cuz it will look 2 soft...so thats why i put it at around -4. Also reducing the detail gives a more organic look.

I did a test: Detail -7 everything else at 0. imported into FCP and blew up to 720p. Didn't look bad at all, especially considering all the sharp lines on my drums set in the frame. ill try those settings though.

Thanks,
Joe
