DSLR vs Consumer...?

I assumed that a person trying to buy a cheap camera prolly doesn't have enough left to get decent sound and someone to manage sound during production
i think telling people to rely on the built in sound of a cheap camera is bad advice either way. if they can't afford to do it right maybe they should shoot silent movies instead or just use music and voiceovers?

And most people would say forcing yourself to workaround on a D90 isn't worth it. If you can't do that right then why not just do a comic book.

I think you just like to play Devils Advocate. lol

Ha ha...I wouldn't say "extinct".... Going the way of the dinasour maybe....but not dead yet.

Well you might still use one, but would anyone go out and buy one? None of the DOF adapters I've seen have a dof and bokeh that closely replicates 35mm. They all have a really muddy look. The D90 on the other hand is as close as you can get to 35mm dof.

here comes the pain.......

No pain. Just one question: have you ever actually shot with a 35mm Adapter Combo? Not just fiddled, but produced content with one?

I'll tell you right now that you're dead wrong in your assumption, but no harm done.

actually i think i just like to point out that things are hard. it takes work and talent to produce great stuff, no matter what the glossy catalogs and seasoned salesmen from canon et al are telling you. people around me who i may or may not know very well but who know i'm a filmmaker always call me when they're about to buy a camera and when i tell them a camera isn't very good they go "oh but it has 96khz and 2 megapixel, that's more than hdtv" and things like that. i hate it. if you're serious, spend the time and money, if you're not serious that's fine but don't ask serious questions.

And the gain/pre-amp isn't noisey? pretty clean through XLR ports as well?

Guess I'm gonna go ahead and buy one right now to test it.

I can find you some links to some reviews if you're interested. I haven't done any critical testing. I actually just sold mine to get the new H4n which does 4 track recording and zoom have stated it has better pre-amps. The more critical reviewers thought the external mic pre-amps were ok on the H4 but not pro. A sound devices pre-amp would be the way to go but I wanna hear the pre-amps on the H4n first.

which one? it's a fact that the bokeh can never be the same, it's hardly even theoretically possible. i've shot serious stuff on the p+s, letus, m2, and various diy solutions btw.

na but the dof adapters in the zacuto shootout looked like **** to me compared to the D90. But I won't argue with you because your point is taken.

Not talking about DOF or Bokeh. I honestly don't give a damned about Bokeh.

I'm talking about people not buying them or adapters being extinct.

But Squig gets my point. It's one thing to really know from experience and being there, using, abusing. And it's another to assume.

35mm Adapters are in no way dead. Especially so long as Panasonic's ability to grip an entire sector into using proprietary media exists.

I'll tell you exactly when they're dead: when an HPX170 form factor camera that records to P2 (or whatever Pana's next solution is) and features a 35mm sized sensor, interchangeable lenses. You can call death to 35mm Adapters then.

It won't be when RED releases Scarlet either. Low/no-budget narrative filmmaking is a tiny niche within a tiny niche within a small sized niche.

Thanks for the H4N advice. I'm ordering one right now to test out.

I also seriously considered a HMC150 and diy adapter for my film but I'd be kicking myself now with the GH1 coming out

LOL...yes I have one. But I don't use it for the same reasons you mentioned. I have grown to dislike using them.

Ok, but you reffered to "his assumptions" and those were explicitly about bokeh. Maybe you should have quoted another post. It's actually hard to follow your line of thought, i'm not just splitting hairs...

What the hell are you talking about, Matt? He clearly says "Nobody's buying 35mm Adapters anymore".

Good grief.

Kholi is right about the sound issues. Leaving out sound in the discussion would be similar to advising somebody to buy an 8mm camera just because it has a cheap up-front cost.

:::smacks forehead:::

But on some of these DSLR there is no sound at all (to speak of).

Really and truly I cannot imagine anyone using the HFS100 for sound or the D90. I thought that went without saying. So I'm saying it -- REGARDLESS OF SOUND, spec-wise which camera would be best to shoot a web-based short or webisode?

That's it.

The best low budget option for web delivery would be a D5000 and zoom H2. Camcorders with dof adapters are an extinct species. I was reluctantly about ready to buy a HF11 and dof adapter to shoot my film just when the D90 came. Even with all it's flaws the D90 is a much better option and so far the GH1 appears to be even better....jury's still out on it's low light ability though.

Thank you --

And the GH1 will have the kind of recording time (we think) that a typical camcorder does?

Thanks again!

But Matt and Robert CAN go ahead and talk about the Zoom H4, even if I have to start another thread in the audio section. Since Matt keeps mentioning it and all.

Have either of you used it in a narrative scenario and can you give some insight on the experience you had with it? Versus recording into camera on say an EX-1 or HVX200?

On Topic: Ian also expounds on image quality differences. The truth is that neither are right for every shooting scenario. Here's a suggestion I will make, though. If you don't have to shot NOW then wait for the GH-1. Even if it is only as good as the D90, ti's still got the one-ups that will save you time on your production.

Ever second spent fiddling to get a proper exposure, shutter and ISO is money wasted. In this equation, low budget, money = time and where you might think you're saving money by going this route, you're really burning more of it fixing stuff on set or in post later.

Again -- thank you.

So we're all agreed then? For web=based shooting we're all for GH-1?

(I'm still concerned about the recording time. That 5 minute crap with the D90 is just bogus. Though it might make sense as second cam if it drops in price dramtically due to the GH and D60X).

For web=based shooting we're all for GH-1?

At the moment, that camera is the hope. Although some people have been convinced the 5DMkII is superior due to it bigger sensor. However, let's remember NAB is next week and we could get some surprises that get us talking about yet something better than any of the currently announced/released DSLRs.

(I'm still concerned about the recording time. That 5 minute crap with the D90 is just bogus.

Yep, I agree 5 minutes proved to be horrible for me, and I lost moments on my last shoot, because I just simply lost track of the 5 minute countdown. It's not obvious to me by looking at the LCD.

GH-1 is supposed to have far longer recording times.

But the original question of this thread was image quality only, and we've gone all over the place. For anyone who is a control freak, I'd say go get an adapter, and a HDV/DVCPROHD/AVCHD camcorder. You'll have more control over your look. If you want something simple to use and don't care about tons of control or 24p, I think the 5DMkII is THE camera *right now* you can actually get one in your hands.

Lastly, don't forget about the higher end solutions if you have the money, or get tired of all of these hack workarounds.

What the hell are you talking about, Matt? He clearly says "Nobody's buying 35mm Adapters anymore".
i'm talking about exactly what i was talking about. please tell me what i got wrong because i don't get it. here's the quote you replied to, saying that his assumptions are wrong. as far as i can tell his main if any assumption is that the dof and bokeh sucks.
Well you might still use one, but would anyone go out and buy one? None of the DOF adapters I've seen have a dof and bokeh that closely replicates 35mm. They all have a really muddy look. The D90 on the other hand is as close as you can get to 35mm dof.
look, i'm not saying you're wrong, i'm saying that it's hard to discuss with you when every time i question what you say you change the subject as if nothing had happened. i guess i could be a little stupid, but if so i still think you should be able to express yourself so that even us stupid people understand.
