I for one agree with roxics, and am sorry for starting a new thread and not replying to his, but now that Panaonic are bringing out the GH4 with 4K video will Canon follow suite,if not their DSLRs will be photo only in a short time ! i dont believe that leaving only 25/30P mov video will compete.If Panasonic can bring out a reasonably priced camera that does stills and 4K video why cant Canon,for someone who prefers the overal Canon colour look i truly hope so.Regarding a 5D4 i dont have full frame lenses so it would have to be a EF-S Camera.

I think Canon has made it's line up pretty clear...
If one wants excellent video quality, they have the C series. Even if they did produce a lower line 4K DSLR camera, I wouldn't expect it to be in the league of the GH4.
 
The C series is out my league,and if they cant produce a cropped lens 4K camera like Panasonic or affordable 4K camcorder like the Sony FDR-AX100 how will they compete.
 
well, they may decide they just won't
and then all you can do is pay up or go somewhere else
as I did, 18 months ago (sold Canon DSLR, bought Sony NEX, very happy with it)



edit: since it seems it's exactly the same in the stills world right now (here), I think it's a good time to remind Canon that...

Remember, not everybody is at the same budget level as you.

For example.... The Arri Amira is a 1080HD only camera with no 4K and a starting price of $40K, and the entire first run is spoken for.

Might I also ask... Do you need to do 4K productions?

We have a 4K camera in house, but all of our deliverables are 1080HD.
 
Competition is relative to the needs. In the High end, needs are diverse. Professional work is a mix of very high standards, and very very practical choices. The Amira is exactly that. The C series cameras are that. But so are the Sony's. Just sony has a million cameras out, so they have less of that sense of "the camera" feel to their brand, yet they make some very cool cameras which out perform the others in many ways. All the other brands have flagships, Sony just keeps cranking out bad ass cameras each year. No one can keep up with them.

Red, BMC, and Panasonic are making some waves this past year. I like the new GH4, and the BMC 4k is a great price. Red just out-did everyone in DR, and keeps getting more refined, and decidedly premium, but at ENG prices.

But main point: pros are very practical people. HD is here. HD is what people watch. If an HD camera not only looks better than a 4k one, but also makes your job more efficient, then get the HD one. So yeah, 4K will come, but we are not there in full force yet.

No i dont need to do 4k productions ! but i hope to upgrade both my still and video cameras this year.But i am reluctant to purchase for instance a 70D or 7D mk11 if thats not 4K.
Even if i continue editing down to 1920x1080P the origional 4K files can be kept.
Yes i could change to Pana and use use my lenses with adaptors but i dont want to as i prefer Canon color as i have said.So for me anyway it will be sad if Canon just dont bother to bring out competitively priced cameras and camcorders to the main competitors.
 
Many posts about future proofing footage, but in my business, shooting footage for TV commercials has a shelf life of only around a year at most.
 
It would be sad indeed, but, if you ask me, the Canon champion would be a 5D4 with Sony-like DR in stills mode, and able to shoot 1080p RAW video via Magic Lantern. I expect it to arrive in 2015.

I want better DR (BM) and better codecs (GH4), while keeping the sensor size (full frame, or APS-C in mirrorless mount so I can use my SpeedBooster to adapt my FF Leica-R primes). I definitely don't need 4K. It's nice if it comes too, but I wouldn't consider it a requirement if I was upgrading today.

I just future proofed my 4 year old 60D. I sold it yesterday and bought a new one today for a shoot tomorrow. I was getting worried it may not make it another day and the switch cost me under $200 bucks. If what you have in your hands works today use it up.
 
Future proof is a pile of crap.
Video probably won't even exist in the future.
4K is an excuse to sell you an update for a window of time when 4k will be of interest.
Without about as long a shelf life as HI-8.

Buy what you need for now and spend the rest on Cap'n Crunch.

I just love 4K personally. I like shooting with it. I like the way it looks, I like it. It is nice, I like it. 4K is nice. I like 4k....


Back around 2002 I wished we could have jumped to 4k (double HD in my mind at the time), and I hate the idea of HD. Seemed a waste of time. The world wasn't ready for 1080. Even now vimeo and most of television is still only 720p. By the time the world is HD standardized, it will be ready for 4k. But that is all in theory. The real world is HD right now. The real world is HD. But I like 4k. I like 4k.
