Dropped My A1...

Filming a doco on a radio station. My friend was fiddlin with my poor mans steadicam and when the DJ talked I rushed in and when I stopped, the camera pitched to 90 degrees and snapped out of its lock, bouncing 3 times on the floor..........................F&$K!

Tape mechanism wont give me my tape, screen black, wont turn off when I switch it off, horrible dent on the built in mic, lens ok as far as I can see, when i start it up nothing activates (silent).

How screwed am I? I have insurance but is it worth repairing?

Just thought I'd share my terrible day.

Regards
Isaac

P.S, The camera was like my child, only had it since april.

you have to send it in to Canon to check what is the extend of the damage . I'm sure they will give you a ring to tell you how much it is going to be before they repair on it. Make your decision then.

Sorry to hear about that. But it is good that you have insurance

I am truly sorry to hear that man. I have not recieved my A1 yet, ordered it last week. But I did drop my dvx100b two weeks ago, and had to drown my sorrows that night. I am thinking about building an aluminum frame around the thing with some thick foam weather stripping inside it to cushion it lol. You might laugh but I have thought seriously about it.

I know what you mean. Luckily AMI are covering me and Canon is assessing the repairs. I was in the middle of shooting a doco so that project is now officially a short doco instead of the 2 weeks shoot. Problem is I cant rent my cam out from anywhere, its just panasonics etc.

Ami? Is that insurance...?

I really need to get insurance on all my equipment... I was on a boat and nearly had to jump ship and thought I was going to die trying to save my camera...

Thats insane!! I don't know what I would do in that situation.

lordybob thats horrible man. Hope it works out with insurance. On top of that both the Wallabies and the All Blacks choked.

Hopefully the damage is minor. We all worry about dropping things -- sorry to hear the news.

I feel for you man. I let my school's soccer team borrow my A1...seeing the kid walk away with it made me feel like I just drowned my own child. I will never do that again.

Best of luck. These things make it difficult for me to sleep easy. I don't even trust my camera's safety as it sits in its case at night.

Is your insurance covering it all? I have insurance for my A1 and supposedly they'll cover the costs in any situation but I have a feeling they'll find a way not to in the event something does happen.

Regardless, best of luck.

I was just thinking today of getting some insurance on my A1 and other equipment. I have no idea where to start though. I guess I'll check out AMI?

Good luck with that man, I remember dropping my old G1. Pretty much the same exact thing happened to me from the height of a fully extended tripod. Luckily only busted the battery and it still runs great to this day. The things a beast.

Just takes a little confidence.

I'd take a $20k camera out, like a Red. So long as I can hold it reasonably.

What's the damage!?!?!?!?!? $$$$$$ et al

Sorry for your troubles man.

Hope it all works out for you.

Ok so my cams still up at canon and no word from my distributor about it. Scary.

Now insurance wise, if i had been working for money (IE on a job) then AMI would not cover it so I'm glad it was a personal project. Does anyone know how to get working insurance on your gear? I'm in NZ hence the AMI and All Blacks (nation is soo depressed right now haha).

It means I have to not work for about two months (estimation)
