What am I doing wrong here. My P2 Store is taking around 1 whole hour to transfer the 4Gb of Data onto my Lacie D2 External Drive. I thought this tapeless route was to help speed up the workflow for editing?

P2 4Gb Card = 4mins = 1 Hour Transfer time?

DV Tape 4mins = 4 minutes Digitising Time?

What gives, or more to the point what am I not doing right?

I am not having the same experience with the P2 Store. Transfers seem to be about the same as a USB hard drive. Not quite as fast as putting the P2 card directly into the Mac.

Maybe you have a defective P2 Store or bad USB port?

Is there any diagnostics software to check if my P2 Store is defective? as for the usb port i can transfer a 1Gb memory stick in next to no time so that rules out a defective port.

Any orther suggestions?

is it possible that you've got it hooked up to a USB 1 or 1.1 port? Given the timing, a USB 1 device would take 53 minutes for a 4GB transfer. Doesn't seem like a coincidence (your times)

Good point, I have a first generation 17" Powerbook and assumed it was USB2, it's got a FW800 and FW400 so I'll have to find out if it actually is USB2 or not. My system diagnostics doesn't tell me what it is......any other suggestions.

March 2003 1st Gen? You can tell if your machine is a 1GHZ model. That did have 2 USB 1 ports (at 12 Mbit). Any model from 1.33Ghz on had the full 480 Mbit USB2 spec.

At least that's what the MacTracker DB tells me (google it...it's a free little app that gives all the specs on every model if you want to search for your model).

can u try it on another machine? try it with another cable? or take it to an apple store or apple reseller and test it out to eliminate the P2 store. You may need to upgrade (via PCMCIA USB 2 card). But first, isolate each piece and eliminate it as the issue.

hope that helps

Brad,

Thanks for the heads up. YES it's the first gen 1GHz model. So I guess I won't be working HD footage until I commit to a box.

I've tried inserting a P2 Card directly into the PCMCIA Slot and the computer just hangs. Mouse stops working, all my hot corners stop working even the dock stops popping up.

I'm thinking it may be something to do with the pot of strawberry yogurt I managed to burst over that end of the keyboard around 4 weeks back.

Thanks Once again
Rich

Rich,
don't give up....Did you install the P2 driver for your machine? if so, try and reboot once with the P2 card already in place in the slot and see if that doesn't help. I've noticed oddly non-repeatable issues with some of my laptops, including exactly what you mention--total freeze. I haven't been able to isolate what causes that but it's there for me too at times. A reboot with the card installed fixes it for me.

In fact, I do a clean reboot with a blank P2 card in the slot before every shoot now just out of superstition. I guess it's one of the small penances one pays for early adoption.

Still, I wouldn't trade the P2 for anything after the past 12 months of HDV post issues (capture breaks, timecode issues, Kona boards to go analog, etc.)

If indeed the yogurt didn't destroy your pc slot, A $35 USB2 card for your PC slot should make that P2 sing.

Well I have a Mac Book Pro... which I know has usb 2.0 slots and a month ago i was out on the road tediously transferring files from my slooooow p2 store.. one hour per 8gig partition... what was wierd was that every now and then it would transfer over in 7 mins.. (yes i was 8 gigs i checked)... and when i tried the p2 genie it transferred it over fast.. so why don't i just use the p2 genie you ask? well the p2 genie i noticed didn't transfer all the files over correctly.. when i went into final cut pro to confirm the files, most of them didn't work.. (so i don't quite trust it yet, but I'll give it another try) but why wouldn't it just work like it's suppose to if you manuelly do your self..

My P2 store transfered slow through my MacBook Pro to the eSATA drives that I had hooked up to it. I just try and do all the long hand stuff at the end of the day when I just want to sit down. It might have something to do with the file format or it could be a safety function built into the P2 store to make sure the files get transfered correctly.
