Here are a few frames I pulled from some scout footage today.

The owner was unfortunately absent during my visit. They did allow me to go in and shoot the room a little.
I'll have to talk to him on the phone further and see if he's game. Small little cramped room, but I liked it. :)

Wouldn't it be nice if we all had producers to secure locations for us? One day. . ..but until then:

MARLON
"Hi, I'm Marlon Ladd and I'm a local independent
filmmaker. I'm doing a short film for an online
competition and I was wondering. . .."

OWNER
(Interrupts)
Oh, you're a filmmaker? Really??

MARLON
Yep!

OWNER
Where you from?

MARLON
From here, born and raised.

OWNER
So, what kind a film are ya' doin'?

MARLON
It's actually a horror flick and I just wanted
to see if I could check out your place and
maybe use it for the film.

OWNER
Well, sure. I think that'd be okay.

Sounds like you were riding along with me when I went location scouting in Georgia...

Yah, as small as it is I kind of like the atmosphere there. I can't use my cheap wide angle, it bows the crap out of everything. Maybe if I had a good one.

I'll have to see what I can do. I might go with natural lighting for a more gritty look as well. Like what you see in the grabs.

And I'll manage to squeeze my dolly under the bed.

I think the natural lighting look is the way to go and fill that place up with some haze and maybe have a little light (moon light) peeking in through the window. Very creepy.

You read my mind.

Any ideas on wide angles? My cheap wide angle lens bows the crap out of everything. I'm assuming the expensive ones work a little better.

Hmmmm. Are you shooting with the hv20?? I have a wide that kind of does the same thing. You could get creative with the wide shots, like from the ceiling or for the room, if you could back all the way to the bathroom. I'd think about what shots you really need the wide for because I see alot CU and compelling MCU shots. Can you do a screen shot of the bowing from that lens? I'm thinking that may give an eerie effect here that could be useful.

Marlon,
try instead using the term Supernatural Thriller,
the term "Horror film" sets off the red flags
with anyone who is not " "Horror-friendly" ",
trust me ;-)

Michael,

short of hunting for a different lens, I would think that AE or Motion (or whatever you're using) can do some lens distortion removal -- don't know if they're any good at it though.

In a pinch, you could shoot a grid pattern (to have a clear sample of the distortion), and use that to apply a correction to your footage (as a series of stills) through a Photoshop batch job.

I don't own PS, but I'm certain this can be done.

Of course, nothing beats getting it right in-camera :)
