Drama-Fest Information

Prizes only for those shot on DVX or HVX? Isn't that being... elitist? Serious question, still figuring this place out.

I know someone named Ericka. That person is in transition, and chose the name Darius. He's a cool cat, and an amazing actor. To bad he is in Cleveland right now. That is the truth.

Anyways, Seriously. The question has been posed. The story I have been thinking about, there really isn't an instance that would reference the characters name. It is basically one man throughout, except for one other part, and some fill shots.

I need to find a place where his name can be said, though huh? I completely understand the rule, and have no problems with the reasoning behind it.
What if, for example, someone made a film with no dialogue? Are there other options that we might be able to come up with that can show that the films were indeed a dvxuser fest film?

The name isn't a huge deal for my script, I can work it in, but just thinking about other types of flicks folks might make as well.

Maybe, it can be you must have a character named.... or.... or... etc. I don't know what the or's would be though.

Thanks
Jason

It doesn't seem unreasonable to me since it is a site devoted to users of DVX and HVX cameras. Obviously, if this was a general film-maker's site I would agree with you.

The work that Jarred and the Mods have done to bring this site into the class that it is with its sponsors and such is a great asset to dvx/hvx users. I applaud their effort and their rules seem perfectly fitting.

Well said, Ted.

The site is called DVXuser.com after all. Soon, owners of the Red will be able to enter too, and then we'll all be f'd. :)

I can see it is a site that caters to the DVX/HVX, but it is also more than that to many folks. To say that you will only be eligable to win if it is shot on those cams, gives the rest of us little to no motivation to even charge a battery, let alone write and shoot something. That's all I'm saying. If they are recieving sponsorship from Panasonic, that is all that needs to be said.

I won't comment on the Panasonic comment. It has been covered enough around here, and that has been speculated enough as well.

That aside. I am not planning on winning anything. I am doing it, because I want to. I want the experience. I want to share in the awesome sub-community, that I saw grow out of the last festival. I want to get my work, no matter how crappy, out there. I want feedback on my work. Just because one may or may not win, or may or may not be eligible for festival prizes, there are other rewards and benefits that can come out of participation in such a fest (that doesn't cost anyone anything, except for Jarred). This is a huge community, and as a result, you never know who may see your work, and what may come out of that. It's networking, it's a lot of things. Whether or not you win prizes is just one small facet of the potential benefits to come from DVXUser Festival participation.
This is all, my own opinion, of course :)

i have another question... if i go with the story I'm considering... 90% of it would be shot on an HVX200. but i'd also like to put a cheap little DV camera in the hands of one of the characters and incorporate that footage into the cut. Will that disqualify the film from prize consideration? just curious. doing it regardless.

Well, I am delighted to know that this site is beneficial to other camera operators. That, to me, is outstanding and an extra big nod to Jarred, the Mods and the users.

This site really has been a god-send for me when I purchased my dvx.

Who knows, maybe one day dvxuser will branch out and become more of a general, all-around film-maker's website (not only devoted to dvx/hvx). I think that Jarred will have really accomplished something special if that were to take place. (kind of a sad thought though... I like being a "dvxuser!")

I have a JVC, so most of what you find to be of interest, does little for me. However, the members of this site don't just talk DVX/HVX, do they? They talk lights, writing, tripods, mics, etc. It's that stuff that brings me here, as well as the fact it is a little easier on me as a poster.

That question was asked by me and brought up by others in the last fest... the answer was that it was okay to have footage from a non-dvx/hvx if it was used sparingly and for the purpose of an "alt. camera look."

I believe that rule would be consistant in this fest.

Yes. There is tons of info on this site! It just blows me away. So, in essence, you are correct. There is info here that goes beyond the scope of dvx/hvx users.

But I guess, since it was a site started for dvx users, the focus is for them. The fact that the film fests are free to enter, have your work be seen and be critiqued is prize enough for me.

I don;t know... maybe I shouldn't have answered your question. I am not really the right person to be speaking for dvxuser. I just thought that I would try and shed some light.

Rocky screams, "Ericccca" -- nah, Adrienne is better. Nice touch to keep films
original.

For the millionth time--we receive no support from Panasonic and are completely unaffiliated with Panasonic. We've always welcomed all filmmakers regardless of their cameras, but we do have a niche-- the DVX100, HVX200, and Red cameras. So we want to collectively provide technical support and explore the capabilities of these cameras. I think we all love the 24p aesthetic, but Jarred's concern has always been that broadening the site's focus too much would be counterproductive to having a cohesive community--the part of DVXuser we all like.

My concerns for DVXFest run a little more along logistical concerns, I'm not sure we want a fest where we have 300 films to screen. DVXfest is founded on the premise that we screen *all* entries so we can all enjoy and comment on the films. That being said, we're going to be de-emphasizing the scoring/judging aspect of DVXfest because it's starting to be counterproductive to the spirit of the fest. So I think you can get 99% of the benefits of DVXFest regardless of whether you're eligible for a prize, but please keep that under your hat. :)

My rule on non- DVX/HVX footage is the same as California wines. A Cabernet Sauvignon has to be at least 75% Cabernet grapes.

Eric/Erica--be creative here folks. If your film has no dialogue, come up with something clever that verifies your film was made for Drama-Fest that incorporates Eric/Erica.

Barry- I'm sorry if I hit a nerve there, I wasn't sure of the status between you and Panasonic. Haven't really been here long enough to know all the ins and outs... which is why I asked.

As for your reasoning, thanks for the explanation.

As for shooting just to be seen, I gots too much other stuff to do, so shooting and writing "just cuz" is not for me. But again, thanks for letting me in amongst the rest of your members.

No problem, we just get this accusation/assumption pretty often and it gets a little frustrating. Glad to have you around .

Barry is right.. we are not financially supported by Panasonic, and the fests are completely funded by my pocket, and the feists amount time donated by Barry S and others.

Its just a common bond we have to link the movies together. As always, you may enter a non dvx/hvx film into the contest, but you can't win a prize.

Thanks Barry, let's see if you still feel that way once you really get to know me ;)
