F55: Dragon Sensor 20 stops

Not to say they can't change but I've seen no indication so far that they can ever deliver something when they say they will. All that to say simply that people should keep expectations low as far as timelines.

They should take a page from Apple and just not say anything until it's ready to roll out the door.

EDIT: Also Jannard's forums signature, "Everything in life changes, including our camera specs and release dates."
I don't disagree with you. Certainly, their track record thus far isn't great in terms of delivering on their promises, but recently I've seen a few indicators that lead me to think Red might finally be growing up. Getting the production line up and running being the most important factor as much as a change in attitude. I may of course be wrong, seduced once again by Jim Jannard's brilliant marketing mind!

As a manufacturer, I can say that getting the production line up and running is always remarkably more difficult than expected. The transition from the successful lab prototype to production level product is about 70% of the overall development effort in our case. I don't think we are unique as I have worked for other manufacturing companies that where it takes longer. With that in mind, I have loads of respect for what RED has accomplished technically, but the ridiculous marketing almost always has me disappointed.

Remember just over two years ago when there was going to be a 3K, 5K and 6K Scarlet, with 2/3, S35 and 35FF sizes sensors, and one of them was going to be a fixed lens camera for only $6,000?

That was then, this is now. I think they learned their lesson. At least, they should have...

wait... you mean that isn't going to happen?

MPB I have some very bad news...

While waiting for my 3k Scarlet for $3k I had actually started investing in some really good 2/3" lenses. Then I noticed that, everytime some competitor made an announcement of something new, Red had to make an announcment to try to keep the fanbois from taking notice of how good the competition is. Then it would turn out to be an announcement of an announcement of something they might produce sometime in the future.

I've learned my lesson over the bridges Jim repeatedly burned for me. If RED makes an announcement and doesn't have the camera in stock for sale right now, it means that whatever the competitor is offering is really good and you should buy that instead of the Red thing that really won't be offere until two years from now.

Thank you Jim for pointing out to me how good the F5 and F55 really are!

You have to hand it to a company that can create such an occult-like following. I wish my clients would follow like zombies and denounce anyone who'd dare to use someone else.
It's pure genius, if you ask me.

I own one, but as a wise sage once said, "Don't love anything too much that you can't walk away from it in 5 minutes flat."

Jim is a genius at marketing. He used to sell Oaklies out of his trunk and make it seem cool and hip to own them. The Oaklies building, very near my house, itself is an appeal to coolness with the spikes coming out of the building, the jet ejection chairs in the lobby, the military tanks in the parking lot, the indoor basketball court. Very cool. It allowed him to charge $200 for sunglasses manufactured for a pittance.

The same with the Red store, also near my house, with the black camo, rusted metal, robotic future look has served them well. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he has the same kind of profit margin for the same reasons. Especially with the Epic price cut. The stuff just looks cool.

Bob are you going epic-regular or considering epic-Nacho-supreme?

(or heck since you are here... thinking maybe time for different coloured koolaid)?

Wonder how many people who rip on Red own a stack of Apple products.
RED is like Apple crossed with monster trucks. Apple fans are less annoying though, in that they don't scoff when you tell them that you're using anything other than a Mac or i-Thing, they only get defensive when you start talking about price.

And yes, maybe the marketing is genius, but I feel like I need to be a chest-pumping, testosterone-sweating, too. many. period. in. a. sentence. using. person to own their stuff. I know, some of you are going to say "It's just a camera", but it's actually a system, one that involves people too. I don't want to stick around REDUSER any longer than it takes to see how many new pages of comments have sprouted up after another sermon by Jim or Jarred.

Take this one thread about 4K TV's where the flow of conversation went something like this, no especially specific order:
-Hey, new 4K TV's at a trade show, awesome!
-Dude, Sony is selling a 4K player for $25,000 and they're throwing in an 84" TV for free, REDRAY wins again.
-LG's model was there too, only $20,000
-There was this article on CNET about how 4K TV's suck, dude must be on some cool aid.
-LOL way too expensive, check this out, there are already Korean/Chinese 4K TV's for $14-17k
-Aw, yeeeeah! $14/17k? Next year they are going to be SO affordable!

Seriously? I'm contemplating on getting myself a Panny VT50 just to be able to watch 1080p content with some level of standard, watching 4K on a sh!tty LCD from China is not my idea of fun, the extra resolution won't offset the general awfulness of everything else.

Ha ha. I own many cameras. For me the Scarlet is rocking out just fine. When the time comes when the upgrades are offered I'll check it out.

And he used to own a company called Dragon Optics too...

Soldier of Fortune magazine mixed with Tonka trucks and Battlestar Galactica styling. On any individual day there will be 12000 users on their forum, two of which will be women.

My favorite has to remain the Scarlet announcement when Jim announced that the RED vendor site was under attack.
It was at that moment when I realized that Jim was actually Captain Kirk in disguise.
