Does shutter speed change DOF?

Sort of! It mostly applies to still photos because with video you should be shooting at a constant shutter, but for photos, you can change the shutter speed to enable yourself to shoot at any specific f stop you choose, which gives you control over DOF. So you weren't 100% wrong to your friend!

What do you mean by larger?

Deeper or more shallow?

By shortening your shutter speed you let less light in, so if you needed to then open your iris up to get a proper exposure reading then yes, your dof will be shallower. Not because of any physical properties of the shutter speed but because of how a shorter shutter will affect your exposure.

OMG. I knew this was gonna happen.

Yes, you can cite shutter speed, ISO, what you had for breakfast, and time of day, as all affecting depth of field (if you want to).

The simple answer is - iris affects depth of field.

I had 10 waffles drenched in butter and syrup, and now everything is out of focus.

Oh, wait... I'm not holding my camera right now...

If you had 10 pancakes the bokeh would look better. Still out of focus, but just look more appealing.

Since we are correcting people here, the proper word is "affect". LOL, Just playin' William! Couldn't resist! Actually a great clarification you have there.

Yup yup yup, good catch!

Maybe it wouldn't happen if people where given more then four or five word answers. Subject to camera distance and focal length also affect depth of field. Do those factors not deserve a mention? This isn't a competition who can answer the most quickly, we are here to learn and help educate those who might not know as much.

The OP asked a simple question and I gave the OP a simple answer.

than not then

Yep. Correct answer. But, after all, this is a "discussion forum", so there are very few times where most will leave it at just a question and answer.

Too much discussion about certain questions asked by certain people leads to confusion. There's a time for "discussion" and a time to just throw out the simplest answer possible because anymore than that negates the answer if the OP doesn't know WTF you're talking about.

And I don't disagree with you one bit, but it is people's right to post, if they want to elaborate. Happens in most of the threads, not just this one. People elaborate, get off topic, etc. Of course we all want to make sure people have accurate information, that's always the goal. I think the OP and everyone else that reads this thread got that DOF is affected by Iris. But is also your right to go around policing it too , I suppose.:cheesy:

I didn't write a thesis paper on it, I gave a few sentences of elaboration. Didn't think it was all that confusing either. Maybe if the OP didn't understand all of what i was talking about, he would ask another question and he would get another answer, furthering his knowledge. We are not on set, no one is burning money on the extra few minutes it takes to type a few more words. If you don't want to that's fine, but don't dare give me crap for trying to help someone.

I didn't think I would ever stumble upon someone so against progression and education.
