Does shutter speed change DOF?

This thread is a pretty funny. Glad to see people are in high holiday spirits anyway.

I think what Chris maybe trying to say is that because these elaborations tangent into discussions about how getting the right exposure can affect your DOF, it muddies up the core answer of "no" and that from a technical standpoint, the only three things affecting DOF are iris/aperture, focal length and distance to subject.

Of course, since iris in particular is related to exposure, shutter speed comes into play in real life shooting scenarios. That's a valid and helpful point from William. The OP probably needs to know that there's only one correct technical answer, though.

I think we need a sticky thread titled if you don't no anything about photography go here before embarrassing yourself with dumb questions.

I'd just as soon keep it simple for OP's who are obviously in their early stages of video, but yeah, a "basics of photography and video" would be the shiz.

And I don't disagree with you one bit, but it is people's right to post, if they want to elaborate. Happens in most of the threads, not just this one. People elaborate, get off topic, etc. Of course we all want to make sure people have accurate information, that's always the goal. I think the OP and everyone else that reads this thread got that DOF is affected by Iris. But is also your right to go around policing it too , I suppose.:cheesy:

Yeah I initially thought shutter speed would CHANGE the DOF but I realized that was wrong in the making of this video where I stumble on my words like crazy (not a smooth talker when explaining things).

Here's a short film I did for English class a few weeks ago. The best part comes at 2:50. We shot in the cabin that was used in Shutter Island (the cabin is located the town I live in). I guess you could say I'm a novice, but I'm really happy with how the dialogue scene came out, and then the transition that starts at 2:50.
