DIY IndieSlider...

O.K. guys, just got off the phone with igus (greatest people EVER!) and here's the scoop.

No matter how you look at it, the shipping is the toughest part and there's not too many ways around that. Igus wants to help anyway they can so please feel free to call and see what it would cost to get directly to you.

Please call bearing inside sales at 1-888-803-1895 with additional questions or to place an order.

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but it's the best I can do for right now.
I'll keep trying & keep you posted.

Shawn, there is a possibility it won't slide smooth from the second rail being 1mm high or low. You'll probably be better off with one rail that is wider or I have even seen the single rail split down the middle and widened by 10 inches, I posted some pics way back in the thread.

I just looked at the District 9 slider again, you might have a good point there for weight distribution, your toughest part will be getting the 2 seperate rails aligned perfectly so there is no drag.

I did a new RFQ from Igus several days ago and they have yet to get back to me.

For my Red, I was going to go with the beefier one, but after the DP of District 9 posted some BTS of a slider they used on that, i think i'll try to mimic that with two parallel 60mm rails.

igus makes split rail!

Then you just get the glide blocks & bearings and build your own carriage.
ChipG, I was looing for those pictures you posted...went through the whole thread and couldn't find them? If you remember where they are, please post again.

Shawn - Please try calling igus. I just talked to them today, they really are great to work with. Try 1-888-803-1895 this is the "Bearing inside sales" number.

As luck would have it, I have 2 pieces of single rail & glide blocks on the way to me now. I'm just about to put together a beefier slider for all the bigger cameras out there. I'll post my results.

Oh & Shawn, I love the empty soda bottles as the end stops on the District 9 guys slider!

See...here's the split rail approach:

Thanks ChipG for finding this!

we should all find a way to show up at IGUS's christmas party this year. we'll make a rollercoaster out of what we all have, and film the nonsense.

Wait, so you're going to build the dual-rail system?

O.K., so I got some parts to play with and try to make a "Zaza WiderSlider" (Trademark). This one will be for all the heavier rigs out there (30-80 lbs).
Here's my first design idea:

The idea is to build a wooden support for the rail that is hollow in the middle. I'll add extra metal support if need be. By making this hollow center,
the carriage can now allow for a 100mm ball mount, so you can just unscrew from your tripod and mount it on the WiderSlider. It will let you level and
also provide a good handle, low that might help with a nice, smooth slide. the ends will act as the stops so you don't lose the camera.

I'm thinking you could use QR systems on each of the tripods, mount the plates on the slider...and set-up should be quick.

Just the rough first ideas before I start the build. Any & all comments would be most appreciated.

I hope you set up a little shop selling these sliders this time around, you deserve to make some money off this. I doubt the Red guys will have time to build thier own and would gladly pay you a $300ish or more premium for a rig ready to go.

I think Igus should also give you a 50% discount on the parts, you have sent them lots of business :)

I did a similar set up using some 1/4" metal rails and dolly wheels. Your set up is a hell of a lot more secure. Mine worked great, but because of the wheels, was movable from the slider platform. I'd been wondering if there were parts available from Igus to build a more secure version, and I guess you've answered my question.

Quick release plates a both ends are a great idea.

Let us know how the build goes.

If I get this one where I want, I'm thinking I will start to market both the ZazaSlider & the WiderSlider! The people at igus now who I am and thank me everytime I call for all the business. They even have a preset order ready for when customers call. I'm trying to find a better way for people in other countries to get the stuff now.

Achieving smooth slides?

Achieving smooth slides?

I am the new kid in class and this is my very first post.

I ordered the slider and tapped the ends and all is good. I am using the Canon 5DII with a variety of quality lenses. It seems like there are several web threads related to jerkiness in 5D video when doing slow pans. I have noticed this as well. I am using a Miller tripod when doing pans.

I have been practicing with the slider. So far I have been struggling with getting smooth slides. I have tried using the rubber band trick but I still get little jerks or hesitations in the footage. I have tried adjusting the tracks but I still am not happy with the consistency.

Has anyone who uses the 5D achieved smooth consistent slides? I am also interested in adding some kind of mechanical aid in achieving smooth slides. I have read some reports of using a logic controlled stepper motor system that will slowly real in a line that is connected to the tripod head, thus achieving predictable and repeatable slides.

Anyone?

Thanks!

It does take practice, make sure the carriage is aligned and keep your hand low to the base. Once you get it down, it just comes naturally. There's always the Kessler PocketDolly, which has a krank on it.

Ronnie built one and used the 5D to make this Vimeo Choice video...great stuff

Thanks! I will keep at it.

I did find this: http://canon-hf100.blogspot.com/2009/07/diy-camera-motion-control_09.html

I might try this although I have no experience with these systems. I have a project where I want to create one long shot produced by several takes of the camera moving across a line of products. The idea is to create several setups, glide the camera across them and them stitch them together to create the illusion of one long conveyer belt sequence. The trick off course is consistent speed in the gliding motion. I think the only way is with some kind of mechanical device. Of course I would prefer something simple and cheap.

There are guys that use more advanced systems like the stuff that Tom uses on his timescapes.org projects. But these seem overkill for my uses.

I wonder how effective the hand crank system is on the Kessler system?

FYI: when I called Igus (very friendly woman answered) to order the parts I just mentioned that I "was one of those video guys who found this web thread..." and she just laughed and said she knew exactly the part numbers I was looking for...

About a week after receiving my slider I received a package that contained the entire Igus product catalog. Very interesting. Sort of gets the imagination running: I might look into building a stabilizer rig with the tubing and connectors that they sell.

Hi all. I need some advice. I've been using my Miller DS10 head on my Igus platform and really don't know why I'm doing that. Is there a fluid action PAN ONLY head out there? Might be lighter / cheaper than the full pan/tilt head.

Zaza, intriguing design, i'm VERY curious to see how well it'd work in the 30-40lb camera range (which is what my Red often weighs kitted up). I'm curious the pros/cons of a split rail design versus two parallel smaller rails with a gap between. Definitely keep us up to date. I agree that Redusers would be very interested in such a piece. If you want me as beta tester, hit me up.

I can't help you with this one...maybe just browse through the B&H site?

I might just take you up on that Beta Tester offer...thanks!
