DIY IndieSlider...

Hello everybody!

I've read a lot about all of thoses sliders and now I'm just wondering which model I should buy on amazon!

I was really happy going with this one ( http://www.amazon.com/DryLin®-Linea...DIT8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1294186386&sr=8-3) because it's ready to go, already drilled etc...

But this one has an hand-clamp... (http://www.amazon.com/DryLin®-Linea...6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1294186464&sr=1-6)

I was just wondering because somewhere I saw someone say that it was better to go with the version that didn't give the possibility to play with the "bearings" to just go with the regular ones and that would be better!

Is is true? I would rather buy the already drilled one if it's working well and add an hand-clamp by myself if needed...than to receive it and to go to the shop to get it drilled.

What are you guys thinking ;0)?

Thanks a lot
Just buy one of mine and you don't have to worry about a thing! ;-)

So I bought that manfrotto converter plate for 23 dollars............of course, I now realize that my tripod head as an adapter built inside that can be taken out to accommodate 3/8 inch screws as well. I'm a loser. Can't take back the adapter because I tossed the box that it came in :(

D'OUGH! But you should be set now.

Ok, Just lost one of my bearings in the slider. I can't get away with 3. Can someone show me the link to this part? Thanks

So I've been meaning to post some updates I made to my Igus/ZaZa slider since my original and first post here on the forum which was post #2394 on page 240.

- I made a brake to add some drag if need be and tighten down the carriage for transporting. Used a 1/4 20 nylon screw (bolt) from Home Depot and a knob from my local electronics supply shop which was designed for a 1/4 inch shaft and has a set screw. I also discovered quite by accident tonight that there is another way to lock the carriage if my fluid head isn't mounted on it... I can just grab the threads from my mounting screw that are poking out the top and turn them until the head of the bolt on the underside of the carriage lowers down into one of the pre made countersinks on the rail base... cool!

- I decided what I wanted to use for "feet" ... 2 small mini tripods. This allows me to angle the feet any way I want which is really cool when I want to incline the slider against a wall or a tree... I can even get pretty much vertical with it and if I'm indoors using a wall and the floor the center column suction cups make it a rock solid placement.

- A home made hi hat riser to get the rail out of the field of view when shooting "down the rail." Hollow aluminum tube, threaded rod and some conn bolts from Home Depot and some oak from my Dad's garage... and a bunch of help from my Dad on how to use his workshop tools... thanks Dad!

I recently scored a brand new small 8" drill press for 40 bucks and am going nuts making stuff which I've found I really enjoy... I even modded the drill press itself and added some lights with on-off switch to it which are wired into the press's existing power and the lights can be placed on it anywhere I want with rare earth magnets (yes I'm off work for the winter and have way too much time on my hands!). Each new thing is a challenge and I love a good challenge. Right now I'm making my own rods and clamps and a follow focus using vintage slot car plastic gears for my right angle gearbox ;)

Here's some pics of the slider updates (maybe delete the code for the pictures if anyone quotes this post... wink) ...

Those feet are a Great Idea! Thanks

I was looking to purchase the 4" riser from film tools but it is out of stock. Can anyone recommend something similar to that without breaking the bank? I will be using it with a Manfrotto HDV701 head and attaching that to a zazaslider standard, after I purchase it when Zazacast returns my e-mail sent from his contact webpage :)

I did! :-)

You guys are awesome. Thanks so much N635DC and Zaza.

I get the "traintrack" coupling idea, but here's my thought...I'd like to be able to mate ANY of the sides just in case a part of the rail gets dinged. That way I can just rotate ONE of the rails and mate them fine. In addition, I want to design super-light handles (just aluminum bars) extending from the (currently non-tapped) rail ends. This complicates the mating because I don't know yet how I'm going to attach the handles (threaded or not? hmm) to the rails.

Add to that, I'd like to be able to work out an assembly that allows me to attach the whole thing to, say, a staircase railing (with ties, etc) from any of the pre-drilled holes. For everything, I want to have as much of the thread sizes matching so that if I lose a bolt it's ok.

I'm about to try designing the whole plan for the machinist (I'm trying to do as much work myself as possible to lower his time/cost). Does someone have something already setup in Illustrator? If not, I'll just set it all up based on the schematic from Igus.

I'll share what I do here to help the community.

Did you ever end up doing this? I am trying to combine two rails (16s) and igus rep told me to chamfer the ends. I'm not really sure what this means but I saw this thread and wondered if you had any success with your method.

You'd have to go back through the thread...this has been talked about many times over the years.
I have yet to see anyone find a good solution.

I need to just get another section of track, which I haven't done yet. Wonder if I can get a sample piece that maybe didn't pass inspection to test my design out first :)

Shouldn't you be out shooting with the nice new AF100 you have? I want footage!! ;-)

Doing some shooting Saturday morning! I'm still waiting on the birger mount really. But, we are just going to go with it and just shoot wide open for these pickup shots we need to do. But next week I am hoping to shoot some test footage with the DP I like to work with. Gotta do the obligatory waterfall shots :) (To test the VFR)
