DIY IndieSlider...

to add to Zaza's referenced description of a fluid head, "friction" heads are sometime referred to as "fluid" heads. beware. since grease is technically a fluid in the marketing sense, some companies are in the wrong, and are marketing fluid-TYPE heads without disclosing how they really function. i haven't found a "fluid" head under $100 that functioned without a certain amount of friction and/or grease. and don't ever test a tripod head in a store without a camera on it, but that's just common sense :-)

I am looking for the lowest cost (decent) tripod to use with the ZazaSlider. I have been looking at this... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/567602-REG/Manfrotto__190XDB_with_701HDV_Video.html

I know the Manfrotto 701hdv head is recommended, but does anyone know if the Bogen Manfrotto 190XDB legs will support the Zazaslider along with the head and a Panasonic Lumix GH1 (light set up not weighing more than 3lbs).

Does anyone have experience with this setup or does anyone have any recommendations on another tripod for around the same price???

Thanks!!!

That's the tripod I used for the "Graveyard Slide" film in the first post... and the one in all the pictures of the build too!
I use it all the time for lowish shots and I put a DVX100b...or HMC150 on it. Shouldn't be a problem.

Hi Joe,

I bought that head today, and wow !, it's super smooth !, you cannot jolt it like my regular photo head ( also high quality but for photos ) , there's some nice friction on there allowing me for super smooth pans.

thanks for the help.

I don't know about the head you're using, but video heads are 'fluid' heads and allow for much smoother movement. If you've never played with one...you should....you'll notice the difference right away.
The more you spend, the smoother the movement! (that goes for a lot of things in life...LOL)

Here's a good explaination:

Just wanted to say thanks to Mr. Zaza for all his work for the community, and specifically for providing the info I used to assemble my slider.

The parts I bought from Igus were the WS-10-80-813 (approx. 32" length) and WW-10-80-10 carriage.

I've posted photos & a description of my current rig, including an old matte box I adapted for use with my GH1 DSLR and the slider:

Thanks again.
