DESIDERATUM - A Film By Ben Sliker

Well, got a no-go on showing the raw footage of the last shot, so Neil, you'll have to stare at this screengrab and imagine a dolly out to this position, shot at 48p and slowed to 24p.

*Ben doing his best Wayne's World impression:

"Oh, I got it, let's try the super-duper everyone's happy ending:"

In the end, we decided that this shot was WAAAAAY too cheese to end the film with. CUT IT!

How I lit this, part two:

Alright, so Ben and I decided we wanted a very ethereal/sterile look for all of the "drug" shots. So we went with infinity white space with lens flares. (Okay, it doesn't make total sense, but it's pretty, so there.)

I put up a 4x frame with diffusion on it behind the actress about five feet back, back lit it with a four bank diva, boom, instant infinity.

As I looked at the frame I decided her face was too dark, so I threw up another two bank diva camera left, it's looking how I imagined so far...

Now for the lens flares. I had a Britek 650 and we blasted it at the lens, it took quite a few tries to get it just right, but eventually it settled into a nice green lens flare.

All of the lights were tungsten balanced.

In the still in the above post, I lit the scene with the sun.

Joe... You forgot all about the most important part! Clapping together work gloves full of dust so that it would glitter in front of her face!

Yes Ben. but that was your magic, not mine. You wouldn't have me stealing your thunder now would you?

Yes Joe, you are correct, it's just that I really like to be modest about my glove clapping abilities, so that it doesn't overshadow the rest of the film. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

..haha. i know what you mean by the "all state" shot. .. the slow pull to a wide/master shot leaving the old president from 24 in the near distance with the house/car/agent/client/incident behind him where you see the scene coming to a resolve/total unresolve, and he says something about being in "good hands"
..th sort of shot that says "so take a moment of thought and look at this.. all of this.. it can all be this bad/good if you are/aren't with allstate"

..classic. i can imagine it spot on from that screengrab. :)

I think the only thing we could have done to give it more "allstate" cheese would have had them all facing the camera like a portrait and smiling. lol.

Great work Ben. Beautiful camera work and genuine performances. Well told story. I thought that this worked really well. I don't really have any criticisms so I'll just leave it at that. Great film guys!

A sincere congratulations on making the finalist list! Your film should look AWESOME on the big screen and hopefully I'll get the chance to meet with you at the event! Can't wait!

So, when he enters the bathroom, i think the panic of the situation has already passed, and the reality of his worst concern has already set in.

Just saw this, and while I can see your thought process, I didn't get that when I watched the film. Even if he had already imagined the worst possible thing, seeing it should have had some kind of impact on him in my opinion. Just a quick two cents, and again, I am very happy you made it into the top 8! I think it is a very well deserved honor!
