The RED team has been very open about their dates and determination, but most anybody with half a brain and knowledge of any kind of production knows that things change.
the point is not so much to have the product early 2007.. 2008.. etc

the question is to know when.. because there are people who need to schedule their lives, ok?..

Scheduling your life around a product that is already complete and on the market might make more sense for you... or just wait until a schedule is announced and then reschedule your schedule. :)

There is an announcement. There is a schedule. And there is the word of a successful business man. Maybe where we're living the word of a man has some value. :)

well said. What I should have said is that there is no date. I'm completely confident in Jim's word and for me that is knowing that the camera is coming.

I have a feature that I would like to shoot with RED, but I'm not going to set a production date...as a matter of fact it may be a good year or more before I even reapproach the subject. I guess that's why I'm not too impatient.

Ya his word that he will put out an excellent camera. Jim as always qualified dates and schedules with subject to change so there is no real concrete date given just a goal. What is concrete is that the RED team wants to put out the best camera they can so people should let them do it and stop crying over dates.

options and choices.. i'm here because it was announced early 2007.. if not, i wouldn't be here talking w/ you.. :)

We have been very clear about our schedule... with no promises. If our estimated timeline doesn't meet your expectations, then we apologize. If you need an exact date, we cannot accommodate you.

We are doing our best to maintain an open dialog with potential RED customers. We are always giving our best estimates for milestones and listening to input on feature sets. Without this open dialog, the project would not have had as many features as you will get when we are done. But our job is not to meet your deadline or wish list. It is to complete the job at hand as well as we can as quickly as possible. If there is slippage in the estimated timeline, we will be the 1st to tell you. There is no reason for us to promise or give hard dates and miss. That is why we have been very careful to give "targets" and "goals"... never giving firm dates or promised specs. "Things can change" has been included in all our statements.

It is not in our best interests to let you down. If you have a strict schedule to meet with exact dates for execution, we suggest that you look to another solution. Forcing our project to meet your deadlines is not what we have in mind with open dialog.

This process (open dialog) is an experiment. If everyone keeps their head to the end, we will continue to run our business and future releases this same way.

Jim

Thanks Jim. I was just PM'ing somebody stating that if I were you guys I would have stopped all dialogue and open discussion (even though it has it's benefits) because of all the irrational requests and requirements set down by people not entitled to irrational requests.

Thankfully you and your team are much more thick skinned and mature than I am. :)

I hope the dialogue continues.

filmmaker... I assume that you have a reservation. Anytime you get really nervous about the schedule, for whatever reason, you have the option to ask for a refund. No hard feelings. As of today, we are still on target. But there is a lot of hard work left.

we're sure of that.. thx for your care..

Thanks Jim,

When my camera does arrive I am confident it will be great. I will do my best to create work with it that turns my colleages heads and them on to RED and also try and make you guys at RED proud and justify all your late nights and comitment to creating a world class camera first and foremost.

it's not the point.. it is to know when.. i don't give a damn (gone with the wind quote ) if it will be late than april 2007 but it wouldn't be fair not to know.. or to have early 2007 just to sell.. it would be harmful..

and i'm happy with the words of the company's owner..

At my country, such behaviour can be sued if it will be proved there was a deceived action on purpose. More than the delivery date what really matters is the confidence on the info available about the dates.

NO irrational requests were produced here. NOR untrustful feelings.

As an engineer by degree and day job, I can say that every single project I've worked on in my five years in the field has NOT hit the ship date, this is normal and par for the course. I'm not worried if Jim doesn't hit early 07. In fact, I'd prefer more of a Q3 timeframe because I know him and his team are working their asses off and every month of dev and test is making this product more solid. So please Jim, just get the camera right and slip however much the actual product needs. I've seen too many products crippled because managers were more concerned with hitting a deadline than with quality.

"I hope the dialogue continues."

with the due respect, this kind of fears + this 'ass kissing' is what i could call: imature feelings..

i love this man too.. but i don't need to say hello everywhere he appears in this forum as he knows who i am..

i know there are a kot of careless in the world.. this man is only the 606 world's richest man of the world according forbes.. he has 2 bombardiers and so on.. but give me a break.. email him if you want to close to him.. maybe he can arrange a place in the list..

the only one here with such status is jarred.. do you know why?.. because he has a great forum.. and he was responsible for a part of the red sales success.. grow up people..

The guy has said they are on schedule. He's also stated from the very beggining in big bold letters -> no dates are set in concrete. I don't know how much clearer than that he can be.

If I had a project that had to be in production by a specific date, or have specific commitments or contracts, then I would consider another camera, or at the very least a plan B (purchase or rent another camera as a contingency). Obviously, it doesn't serve anyones purpose to get the camera out later than necessary - kind of like a restaurant opening, they only recoup costs when they start delivery. So, my advice ? Chill, first of all, and second, evaluate your needs keeping in mind that production and delivery will be flexible (within reason, of course).

This thread is a wee bit of a tempest in a teapot (as me Nan used to say).

To summarize - On schedule - Flexible timeline. Chill and enjoy the season.

Obrigado...

I remember what I could read in the cinematography.com boards when Stephen Williams (the double poster there and here) posted that had exchanged cards with Jim Jannard at IBC and probably he already knew who he was. And Mr. Jannard (with [SIZE=-1]courteous manners but teased before after several invectives at cinematography.com) says: I have no idea. There were a lot of people who exchanged cards with me...
