Dangerously Stripped Jacket and Moire

Was asked to shoot a short interview for a friend's band recently.
To my dismay, the band leader showed up wearing a jacket with thin pin-stripes. Great. Moire-city.

I had neglected to tell him to avoid wearing stripes, and considering the low budget nature of the project we didn't have time to reschedule. I warned him and his publicist that this might end up being a problem on camera, but they wanted to try it anyway.

Well, to be perfectly honest, it didn't come out anywhere near as bad as I expected. The client is happy, which I guess is the most important thing.

Mostly evident if you watch his collar closely.

He keeps his upper torso amazingly still during that interview. That's part of what saved you, I'm sure! And, hey... the stripes could have been much thinner.

Seriously- I didn't even ask him to do that. He was pretty relaxed and that's just how he talks I guess.

Also, interestingly enough the moire on the original footage seems much more evident. I read somewhere that using my NLE's interlace flicker reduction filter can help, but it didn't seem to make much difference until I saw it on Youtube. I think the streaming compression from youtube is what did it.

Either way, I really thought this would be my first shoot ruined by moire. Guess I was spared this time.

Looking forward to a Rebel with the DigicV chip so we can stop worrying about this already.

This is where the T3i 3x crop/zoom shines. Simply put on a wide lens, flick over to 3x and voila, it's gone. For situations where you're already on a 50mm or a portait lens it works incredible. If you are already on a wide lens, you'll need a 11-16mm to even think about it.

Nice piece by the way!

Cheers,
Pete

Thanks!
I actually came away from this project liking their music.

The problem with the T3i zoom is that you have to go much wider (this was shot with a 50mm prime), and I've noticed some image quality loss unless you are using an uber sharp lens. I think the real solution will come with the new Digic chips.

No doubt the 3x only works for portrait lens and out. Even an 11mm would be 52mm (35mm equiv) :)

Here's hoping the new processors help resolve slightly sharper and eliminate the moire issues in a similarly cost effective package!

Cheers,
Pete
